HORRIBLE ACOIDERT.—The Chronicle vouohes for the truth of the following occurrence: On Saturday night, or early on Sunday morning, a child three or four years of age, whose parents reside in the lower part of the First Ward, Al legheny, by some means or other possessed itself of a quantity of liquor, which had a short time previously been brought Into the house, and of which it partook freely. The 'parents knew nothing of the matter until Sunday morning,when they attempted to wake their child, which was lying In bed. All their efforts were fruitless, and a physician was sent for, who on his arrival pronounced it in no danger. The child lay .pretty much [in the same state until the after part of the day, when it began to show evidence of pain and thd Doctor was again sent for. This time he pronounced the child irrecov erable, and so it turned out to be, for at five o'clock it died A SWIERDLLNG OPEEtATION —Au Individual from M'Keesport, applied at the Mayor's office yes terday morning for tho arrest of a man named Lytle, whom he alleged had swindled a young friend of his out of some fifty dollars. The young man, it appears, owned a lumber raft, valued at sixty dollars, which ho disposed of for that amount to Lytle, in the vicinity of Eliza beth, ton dollars of whioh was paid down, the remainder to be handed over on the sale of the lumber at our wharf. The two arrived here, and the raft was disposed of, hat instead of paying the additional fifty dollars, Lytle ordered him off and threatened to do him bodily irjury should he refuse to leave. Officers Trovillo and Knox went in search of the individual complain ed of, but before they could succeed in getting sight of him, he bad left the city for op the riv• er, on one of the Brownsville boats. 813GULAR INCIIP6NT.-A very pretty littlo in cident occurred on Sunday morning, in the South Pittsburgh M. E. Church. While the congrega tion were at divine worship, a little bird flew in through the open door, took a position at the hod of the church, near the minister, and ommonced pouring forth a Ilaci cf rt....lndy so powerful as to stop the exercises. As the I,ttlo elliger's music was net exactly in timo, a mem ber of the congregation took him very gently in hie hand to an open window, the bird ail the time continuing his song, and sent him en his Way. H ELECTION OF A PRINCIPAL F,IR TUT ION SOILOOL.—At a special meeting of the Cvozr,..l Board of Education, held last -evening, Mr. J. L. 0. M'Kown, A. M., was elected Principal of I the High School, of this city. Mr. .M'Eown is at present Principal of the Cooperstown Female Seminary, New York, and was selected from al out thirty competitors. His recommendations as a deadest scholar and irreproachable gentle,L en were of the most satisfactory character, and the Board were unanimous In the selection. The other teachers of the school will bo elected in the course of a few weeks. CATHOLIC CP.MICH STONED.-onSaturday night, about ten o'clock, shortly after the toroh light procession was over, a gang of rowdies made an attack cc the Catholic church, on An damn street, Allegheny, and broke a number of the windows. Heavy stones were also thrown against the doors. Rao the participators in this disgraceful affair are, is not known, but no hope they may be detected and punished. The attack was first blamed on those in the prccee slim • but we wore assured that it did not occur mad a considerable time after the procession passed the church.
