It is only a few weeks since they caused a number of manumit. ted negroes in charge of Capt. M'Henry, to be carried off, thus relieving that gentleman of the farther trouble of taking care of them, and obliging him exceedingly; and now they have again been perpetrating a trick equally as silly, but far more annoying to the person concerned, the particulars of which are as follows : .1: On Saturday morning a gentleman arrived in this city, and took lodgings at the Monongahela Rouse. Soon after his arrival he stepped down to the clerk's office, and enquired for the U. S. Marshal, Commissioner, &0., to whose offices he wished to be shown. Several of the "affiliated" soon heard of this circumstance, conceived at once there was a "nigger in the wood•pile," and quickly sent word to their brethren in all parts of the town, that there was a negro-catch er in our. midst. The excitement among the colored population rose high, and some of their preachers even went so far as to announce the news from their pulpits, accompanied by the warning that if any fugitives were present they should conceal themselves. In the meantime the gentleman started out on the hunt of the persons he desired to see, and was shown to the residence of the clerk of the U. S. Court by Dr. M'Cook, Jr., where he stopped a few minutes, and then went to his Hotel again. Here, shortly after, he was waited upon by a committee of philanthropists," who de manded to know his intentions, and wont away *with a very big flea in each of their ears, after hearing the following statement : The gentleman gave his name as H. B. Nor thup, of Sandy Hill, Washington county, New York, and stated that so far from being a slave catcher, he was the individual who rescued the slave Solomon Northup from Louisiana, some years ago ; his object in wishing to see the 11. 8. Clerk was to transact some private business previous to his departure that night for Phila delphia, which, owing to the absence of Mr. Sproul, ho could not accomplish. Before this story became generally known, we understand Dr. M'Cook suffered considerable annoyance from a number of dailies, who got the idea into their heads that he was en accom plice of Mr. Northup. Yesterday morning Mr. Worthup, while in the Cueltern House, was waited upon again by two committees of white and colored persons, to whom-hohad to relate the same story before he was relieved of their presence. These repeated explanations at last satisfied all parties, and thee gentleman was allowed to conclude his business in peace. Tux- ABORTION CASE.—A farther examination was had yesterday afternoon, before Alderman McKenna, of Madame Le Pughe and _Edward Hays, charged with procuring an abortion on - ifte person of Miss Harriet Jones. Mr. Thomas M. Marshall appeared as counsel for tho de fendants, and Mr. Roberts, the Prosecuting At torney, represented the Commonwealth. The only witnesses examined were Dr. C. M. Finch, Who stated in substance what we published yes terday morning, and Dr. A. W. Oliver, who tes tified that he furnished the drugs to Le Paghe which she used, not knowing for what purpose they were Intended. After the bearing of this evidence, Mr. Roberts made a few remarks, de scribing the offence as a most infamous ono, and demanding that the parties accused should be held to bail each in the Bum of $1,500. Mr. Marshall objected to this, as he said the evidence did not connect Madame Le Pughe with the crime, and that it would he hard for her to find security In so large a sum. To which Mr. Rob • arts replied that this made no difference; the fact that the offence wan committed in her house was sufficient to hold bar to bail, and be would accordingly insist on the magistrate requiring that much security. The District Attorney also said he would require Drs. Finch and Oliver to give bail In $5OO each to appear as witnesses. The two prisoners were then remanded to jail, until they can succeed in getting responsi ble security for their appearance at Court. ASSAULT ASO BATTLB.Y WITH INTENT TO KILL. ..-:.Late on Saturday night, a drayman named Thomas Dean called at Alderman Wilson's to make information against James Lindsay, the proprietor of a restaurant in Diamond alley, for saattnit and battery with intent to kill. Some of the wholesale druggists, who have been in busi ness twenty and thirty years, say that nothing in the annals of patent medicines was ever like it.
