SALT IN TOE SEA.—Professor Chapman, of University College, Toronto, has published an interesting paper on the object of sea water being salt, and after giving his objec tions to the usually received opinions, he urges \ the theory that the object is to regulate evaporo ration. If any temporary Cause renders the amount of saline matter in the sea above its nor mal value, evaporation goes on more and more slowly. If its value be depreciated by the ad dition of fresh water in undue excess, the evapo rating power is the more and more increased. Ho gives the results of various experlinents in reference to evaporation on weighed quantities of ordinary rain water, and water holding in so lution 2.8 per cent. of salt. The excess of loss of rain water compared with the salt solution was for the first twenty-four hours, 1.54 per cent.; at the close of forty-eight hours, 1.04 per cent.; after seventy-two hours, 1.46 per cent., and so on in increasing ratio. REVOLUTION.—The election of Alfred Black man, a Nebraska democrat, to the Mayoralty of New Haven, by a majority of about 100 over oil other persona, and indeed the election of the en tire democratic ticket for general officers, in a city which used to be called " the Gibraltar of whiggery," and where more indignation meet ings have been 'held, more sermons preached, and more bells tolled (in sympathy with Nature during the groat eclipse) on account of the pas sage of the Nebraska bill, than in any other city in Connecticut,—are signified facts, and are _doubtless the beginning of the end. Popular sovereignty works well in New Haven, and will do the same`in Kansas, if abolitionists and Mis souri mobocrats will keep their dirty hands off. —N. Y. Jour. of Corn. Dissolution. PUP. These Pills, the result of long investigation and study, are- offered to the public as the best and most coniplete which the ,present state of medical =Rolm can afford. They are compounded not of the drugs themselves, but of the medicinal virtues only of Vegetable Itemedlei extracted by Chemical process in a elate of purity, 'and combined to gether in such a manner as to insure the best result& The system of composition for medicines has been found in Cherry Pectoral and Pills loth, to produce a More efficient remedy than had hitherto been obtained •by any process. The reason is perfectly obvious. While by the old mode of composition, every medicine is burdened with more or less of acrimonious and injurious quadities, by this each Judi. Yidttal virtue only that is desired for the curative effect is present. All the inert and oblige:Sem qualitles of each substance employed are left behind, the curative virtues onlybeing retained. Hence it is inn evident thattheeffects should prove -as thoyhave prayed, nord purely remedial, and the Pills a more powerful antidote to disease. than any other medicine known to the world. . - As - it is frequently expedient that many medicinefiehould be taken under the counsel of-an attending PhySicisti, and 1 as he could not properly judge of a remedy without)moa , 1 1 lug its composition, I have supplied the accurate Formuhe by which both my Pectoral and Pills are 'Made, to the whole body of Practitioners In the toiled States and:British American Provinces. If, however there shoal& be anyone who has not received them they will be forwardid by mail Of all the Patent Medicines:that arri-ioffercd, -hew few would be taken-it their composition was known I Their life consists in their mystery. I have no mysteries. The composition of my preparations is laid open to all men, and all who are competent to judgethwsubject freely acknowledge, their convictions or ,their -intrinsic merits. The Cherry Pectoral was pronounced by scientific men to be a wonderful medicine before-its' effects were known. Many eminent Physicians have declared the came thing of my Pills, and even more confidently; and are willing to certify that, theta anticipations were , more, than realized by their effect's 'upon trial. . • .
