The following is an extract from a letter of PROFESSOR HENRY ROIIBOCII. After describing the particular style, two of which be wants for his own ore—one Grand and one Square—he speaks as follows of their excellent qualities: My little daughter, who plays very weL, must, with my. self, have a good instrument, and yours are the cll.]. ones a hich can satisfy me. A FEW days since, I published an advertisement of my Hereon Pianos, in which an extract from a letter from Prof. 11. Robtrock, of this city, addressed to Messrs. Baumgarten rt. Heins, cf Hamburg, the manufacturers, was Inserted. This morning I observed in several of the doily papers a " Notte.," signed by Prof. it, in which lie states that 1 was unauthorized to make use of it, and that it was incorrectly stated and applied. lo reply-1 presumed that it he had written the letter, he, of course, meant what was therein contained, and con sequently required no authority from lam to make the same public. As regard. the assertion as to its incorrect ness, I have the letter In my possession, and it speaks for Itself, word for word at I have published. Messrs ltaum• garten At Heins are not dependant upon Mr. itoll4.ock for eudoirement—their Pianos were known, appreciated and received the highest rommendations from the first artiste, long before Prof. It..saw fit to pars an opinion upon them. M) reason for publishing the extract was in the fact that he was well known In the city, and not be sure his reeom• mentiation was neeettsary to establish the merit of the Pianos. In conclusign, I may add that they stand on their own merit, and are endorsed by such men as List, Thalberg, and others, solely on account of their merit. mh2d CHARLOTTE BLUME. NOTICE. They replied that they did soot manufacture any such, and requested me to examine a Piano of their make sent :o 51re. FRIDAY MORNING Harry Sampson. Obiains Re'venge. Mr. Snarl resides in Forsyth - street. Mr. Snarl is an old bachelor, with an Irish girl for a house-keeper. Snarl lives in good style, but has some queer notions. He dislikes dogs above all things, organ-grinders and beggars not ex cepted. Snarl's next door neighbor is Harry Samp son. Now, Harry is the very opposite of old Mr. Snarl. He sets a high _value on a dog,: and there is only one article equal to a Newfound lander, and that's a woman. Harry has several specimens cf the canine race The other evening they got up a howling match because the moon became eclipsed. They commenced about ten o'clock, and kept it up till tbe sun got an Inch and a half above Williamsburg. This so annoyed Mr. Snarl, that he had Harry jerked. up " for a nuisance," and fined ten dollars. Harry paid tho money, but ro solved on revenge. The next morning the following advertisement appeared in the Herald: Waserrn :—At Forsyth street, two CVll Doge and four Haan. lel Pups. For full•blooded Dogs the highest price will be paid. Call between 4 and 61.. 3f. JAMES MARL. We need not say that the; advertisement was inserted by Harry. His reahon for making the oalls between four and six P. M. was because Mr. Snarl was always out at that hoar, taking an airing around the Battery. At the hour specified, dogs and pups might have been seen going up the Bowery'to Grand, to Forsyth, and up Forsyth to the mansion occu pied by Mr. Snarl. The first person that pulled the door bell was a butcher boy from Center Market, with a pair of bull dogs that would " tear out of a ti ger." Maggie answered the bell, when the fol- lowing colloquy took place Does Mr. Snarl live here?" "He does. Why do you az?" "I've got some dogs for Him." "Doge for Mr. Snarl—mother of Moses, lid you ever; you've mistook the door." Davil a bit of it—read that." Here Sykeio took out the Morning Herald, and showed Maggie the advertisement. Maggio was thunderstruck, still there was "no denying the adveitisement." She accordingly told Syksie to go into the back yard " wid the dogs," and await the return of .Mr. Snarl. Sykeie did so. In about two minutes Maggie was again sum maned by the door-belL " What do you want ?" " Mr. Snarl—l've got them doge he Wanted." ...You have—well then go into the yarciwid the other blackguard." • No. 2. followed No. 1; No. 2 was soon follow ed by No 3, who was succeeded by lots 5, 6 and 7. By half past five the baok yard contained twenty•one bull dogs, and -fourteen spaniels, - The former got up a misunderstanding, and . 13 . Y the time Mr. Snarl arrived, seven spaniels bad been plead hors du combat, {while a britd'e bull dog from Fulton Marker was going through his third fight with " a yeller terrier," from Mott street. Mr. Snarl reached home a few minutes before six. Maggie opened the door, and burst - out as follows • " For the love of the Lord go back and stop 'em. They are_ateing one another up, audit not choked off will devour the eastern. Since the days of Crammel I've not seen such hullabaloo entirely." Snarl " went book "—Snarl looked into the yard and would have sworn, but he could not find oaths sufficiently powerful to do justice to his feelings. When we left, Mr. Snarl was emptying "the back yard" with an axe-helve. The next morning Harry Sampson complained of him for having a " dog fight"on hie premises. Snarl was fined twenty-five dollars;--ftfteen dol lars for having "such a fight," and ten dollars for being "an old hypocrite." It is not necee sary for us to say that Harry Sampson slept bet tee that night than any night since the war with Illexitto.-2171 Y. Dutchman. Remlnlarnoes of Rattlesnakes and Bald Eagles. From a communication of J. Sullivant to the Ohio State Journal, we extract the following; On the Scioto rivn, near Columbus, are the celebrated rattlesnake dens, which in early times were a tenor to the neighborhood and the espe cial dread of the boys who visited the mills. These dens were openings in the face of the rocky cliff; one was largo enough to admit a man in a stooping posture.. Here not only the rattlesnake but many other species resorted for winter quarters in great numbersj and the entrance floor of one of these openings ..was not only worn smooth, but was quite polished by the gliding in and out of these venomous reptiles. I have heard my father say that long before the settlement even of Franblington,.while engaged in surveying, he had occasion to ascend the river with hie party which they did in two canoes, about the middle of April ; it was a warm day, with a gentle - breeze blowing down the river. When about half mile below this ilocality they were assailed by a most , peculiar odor, which as they proceeded increased to so intolerable a de gree that two of the men were taken violently sick, and were obliged to lie down in the canoe. Soon the cause became - apparent, for, on arriv ing opposite to these dens, thousands of snakes which had just left their winter quarters were seen covering the banks in all directions, and basking in the genial warmth of the sun. A pair of bald eagles whom Mr. B. carefully prevented from being disturbed, built their nest iu the top of an F old cedar tree crowning the overhanging cliff, and preyed upon these rep, thee. The hog is believed to be invulnerable to the bite of the rattlesnake, and in the fall a pen was built around the-entrance to - these dens, and the bogs confined there intercepted the return of the snakes to their winter quarters, and were said to have destroyed great untubefs of them. One hard winter, when the snakes had retired to the inner recesses of their retreat, or were torpid with the cold, an attempt was made to break up this resort. A quantity of gunpowder was carried into the cave and a train laid.; the entrance Wee blocked up .and the powder fired, Not much was accomplished by the explosion. The ohrrge found vent upon , the top of-the hill, half a mile away, and made an opening of ma- . ral feet square alongside of the old mill road ; proving that there exists a large cavern which may sometime reward the bold adventurer with extraordinary subterranean discoveries. As yet none have been hardy enough to explore , it. With the settlement and improveMent of the cuuntry the snakes have almost entirely 'disap peared. The last appearance of a rattlesnake that I have heard of, occurred about seven years ago, when a person engaged in quarrying stone In the neighborhood of the dens, entered' the largest one sultry day. He had passed in but a short way when he was alarmed by the Warning rattle of the snake ; in h a fright he rushed past it further into the cave, se that it was between him and the entrance; every time he moved the threatening rattle gave forth its peculiar sound. Ills retreat thus out off, and afraid to.penetraie further within, he was in a most uncomfortable fix. He yelled lustily for his coMpitoimis,.hnt they were too far away to hear hiM. 'At length, wondering at his long absence, one went to the cave, where he found tho poor fellow as blob as indigo, and shivering as if in an ague fit, probe biy from the combined effect of fright and - the coldness of the cave. Upon being eneenreird. he made a rush for the daylight and RSTIII'6IIII - where he arrived safely. • [From the Washington- (Pa.) Commonwealth.t Shetif-Slitorhaig.
