THE =CITY POST,, FRIDAY. - Twat op jag Suist Erin Zwaxsz.—The steam Fire Engine Young Manisa, arrived In our city, per • Ohio and Feinsiliattlii - ltaitrmad, from Cleveland, on Wednes. dal night, ana was Oren to the Neptune Engine House, on Seventh street, where during yesterday morning, It was 715. MA by a laiiesdamberof our citisene, curious to see a ma el:dna whisk buil excited so much public attention lately. Tile Weight of the engine, We bolievels about 5000 pounds, and its capacity for throwing water is stated to be about equektotive of our ordinary hand engines, thoughfrom the trial, which subsequently took place, we think,it is hardly the case. It was manufactured by Messrs. Shnwk & Latta, of Cincinnati. The former person is the inventor, and the pre.ent machine has been exhibited through different. atlas by him. We understand the engine Ls yalned at $BOOO In the afternoon, ea the hour announced for Its exhibb bitten approached, a crowd began to assemble in front of the engine house, and by two o'clock, ,Seventh street was denselypacked with an anxious Four horses were at tolled to themachine, tind as It was drawn out of the house and Move: along, ideas followed by an immense number of parsonsto the place of exhibition, on the corner of Grant attillighthstreete, Where a still larger crowd were await. ing its arrival. The throng here became on dense that it vas' with the utmost difficulty the engine could make its way through. The warehouses in the neighborhood, the bridges, fence s; Canal 'belts:, and houses, were all covered. There were probably four mile° thousand people present. After the engine was properly arranged, the suction pipe, which Ls about six Inches In diameter, was extended into canal, and tire made under the holler. In nine minntes from the time the fire was lighted, steam was up, but from a derargencent of the machinery, water was net thrown until nearly an hour after. At first, only one stream was thrown from a l inch nozzle; but as the engine began to work more effectively, two streams, and at last three, of the same size were played. The water was thrown in steady, continuous streams, with otit any relaxation from the commencement until the end of the trial, and would have been aufficient to have sub dried the fiercest fire in a very short time. We did not see the distance measurel, but understand it wee about one hundred and eighty-seven fret, horizontally. . The "triallasted about - ,hours, and teemed to glee complete satisfaction to all. We heard several members from the Committee appointed by the Firemen's Associa tion, eipress themselves unqualifiedly in favor of the ma- The immense crowd around interfered as much with the oPeratlons of those having charge of the engine, that it required the 'utmost vigilance of a large forte of polio] to keep &vacant place sufficiently largo to work in. In so 4ense 2 a throng, this was an extremely difficult task, and more than once, a tight seemed inevitable, but the un illnching firmness and good nature of the Mayor's officers, fortunately prevented any serious row. A bad feeling was stirred up in the crowd several times, by a watchman nam ed Weaver, who, quite the reverse of the day police, seem ea to have neither patience or firmness, and by his Irrasoible and dishgreeabl &manner, created an angry excitement when wver U s was allayed by the other offisers, Homey do to ar rest Wunken rune, but he should not be put on duty where steadinese and discretion is required -'The quantity of coal required to keep the engine in ope ration one hour, is about three bushels. The engines In use - in Cincinnati, each require ton men and six horses to work and manage them - The men are designated as fol lows: 1 engineer,l fireman, 2 drivers, 2 pipemon, 1 watch men and 3 horsemen. PurNoca :MAY 11 The Money market for the week has been quite easy, with an adequate supply for every legitimate purpose. All the Banks are comfortable, and doing most of the firstsclasa paper offered. We hear of no ttghtneee anywhere; mer chante are doing a gale, legitimate business, though rather contracted—still, there le no disposition to expand beyond their meatus. The large payments falling due this month, in the several banks, are being met with great promptness, which, of itself, speaks well for the general state of affairs. Another item, we notice does credit to our merchants, is the fact that they all seem anxious and are making strenu• ons efforts to pay up their Eastern accounts. The West, generally, is paying up well, and buying only just what they actually need, which is one of the causes of the no usually easy money markets of the East. This is just the thing we must now do—get out of debt, and business in a short time will wear the sound, healthy appearance it should. It is indeed - gratifying to observe the prudence manifested generally, from the manufacturer down to the retailer, which tends to strengthen confidence and lay a firm foundation for future operations. We are much encouraged to note the growing ease the money market has manifested tf late, almost everywhere. In all the principal cities there is an abundance of capital. Prime paper and first-class Investments continue In be sought after, and though it may be difficult for many to raise what money they want, still it does not grow out of any general scarcity. We look forward to a season now happily near at hand and full of encouragement; pros. pert', as it advances, loot brighter and brighter, and should the season continue to be favorable we have every reason to expect the largest crops raised for a number of years past. So far, we have been highly favored by a beniticent Pro,'leneo with a season well adapted to all the watts of agricultural interests. We shall need a very large supply this year, to r,duce the present high rates of various kinds of provisions; and, from present Indications, we hall want a large amount for export, In view of a continuance of the war, of which there is no immediate prospect for its speedy terminal ion. The Westezn Rai'roans are generally rising in value, the activity in freight and travel being represented a• unusu ally great obi the various lines. The high prices of ford stimulated the planting of as much land as possible, and the effect of A good harvest will add still more to the filling •f every avenue of transportation to replet n. The Now York honk Statement shows a diff,r, at atato to what was expected there It was anticipated that they would lose about half a millien, while there was a gain of aenzly forty.three thousand dollars.
