It may not be generally known that the time fixed uponfor the end of the world, by the fol lowers, ot Miller, is very near. The conflagra tion is, according to their calculation, to come off on the 19th of May, proximo, and not on the 19th of April, as prematurely announced. The story that has been going the rounds of a portion of the press, to the effect that during Mr. Wise's speech at Richmond, the whole crowd rose to their feet in answer to the wish expressed by him to see a Know Nothing, was pronounced a fabrication by the Richmond En quirer several weeks ago. No such thing over happened. Mr. George Wt Cross, a member of the Board of Guardians of the Poor of Philadelphia, was expelled by his. fellow members, the other day, for malvereation in office. He is charged with having given away orders for groceries, intend. ed for the relief of the poor, in payment of his own private debts. It was offered in extenua tion that Mr. Cross was intoxicated at the time , but the Board did not consider it a sufficient excuse. A violent attack has been made on the Presi dent and Directors of the Baltimore and Ohio aitroad Company, by a writer who uses the signature of "Double Track." The Baltimore Ripalizan thus accounts for the milk in the cocoa nut: "Wo shall not volunteer in defence of the parties just now, but we only say that " Double Track " appears to be but a second edition of charges heretofore made by a disap pointed gentleman, who failed to get $50,000 from the Railroad for certain constructive ser aloes at the capital of Virginia. A; Sari , implicated in the Martha Washington conspiraCY case, with which our reader's aro no doubt familiar, were arrested uponn requisition from the Governor of New York, charging them with obtaining money un der false pretences, viz : obtaining money from the Sun and Atlantic Insurance Company of New York city, upon policies of insurance issued for certain boxes represented to contain boots and shoes, shipped on the steamer Martha Washington, which was destroyed by fire, and from 'testimony in the case at ilelena, Arkansas, were found to contain only worthless articles. They were to have been taken on to New York by the first train, but a writ of hascas corpus was sued out by their attorney, J. C. Clark of New Brighton, Pa. It is stated farther that all of the parties charged with the burning of the Mar tha Washington have been indicted in the above case, and that another of the Chapig . s: has been arrested in Wisconsin upon a similar - requisition, and is now on his way to New York. G. W. Kim ball has been arrested in New York. Capt. John N. Cummings has disappeared, and thus far he has managed to elude the vigilance of the officers who aro after him. Truly the way of the trans gressor is hard. Kissane,. one of the party to this conspiracy, is now in the Penitentiary, and . all the rest have been hunted like wild beasts for two years by the officers of the law,and are now, we believe, undergoing their fifth trial from charges arising out of that fiendish transaction. BEM AN EXCELLENT PLAN.—The fact that George Law and Com. Vanderbilt—the two great steam boatmen of New York—have come out for the Presidency, has caused a good deal of stir through different parts of the country, and it is said several old Lake Captains, and one or two on the Ohio, intend to put forth their claims and stand " a run." To prevent confusion, a wag proposes to classify them according to horse power, thus : George Law, one hundred horse power ; Com. Vanderbilt, of the " North Star," forty horse-power; and Capt. Brown, of the "John Smith," twenty horse-power, &c. NOVEL BY Sin WALTER Scary.—The reoently discovered romance—lforedun; a tale of 1210, whioh the proprietor steadily maintains was written by Sir Walter Scott, will immediately be published in London, in three volumes, at. the old price of eight dollars—to be reproduced here, of course, at fifty cents. Scott's friends in England maintain, pm. cowra, that lloredun is as great an imposition as Gralladmer—pro dined, under his name, over thirty years ago, for the German market, and then translated into English, "from the German," by Thomas do Quincoy. In the course of my scientific researches, I have been led to the following views, which I think it would be advisable to lay before the A small diminution in the quantity of oxygen in the air favors the development of the higher faculties and the fiper feelings of the mind. Less oxygen is contained in the air at the pro sent time than during geological ages; and it was the slow removal of this gas from the at mosphere, that prepared the way for the intro duction of man, and the highly organized ani mals of the earth. In rooms warmed by means of a fire-place, the air is slightly deoxidated, and this increases men tal power, making study more pleasing and sac cessful in winter; but in closed stoves fuel pro duces no such change on the external air, and accordingly, confers no intellectual advantage. Cold regions which abound in supplies of fuel are favorable to mental exertion, while bar barism maintains its ground among tribes whose apartments are not warmed artificially or not furnished with glass windows to exclude the air without rendering them dark. Civilization fled from Assyria and „Persia as soon as their forests were exhausted. The production of carbonic acid by lire di minishes its advantages. The atmosphere still continues to lose its oxy gen ; and, accordingly, if man's physical or ganization withstand the change, his mind shall acquire new.powere, and civilization will spread to all parts of the earth. DANIEL VAIN:DAN. Hopkinevitle, Ohio, April 30, 1b55. Depredattons of the Peach Worm. MMUS EDITORS :—Touching the deproda• tions of the Peach Worm, permit me to say, for the benefit of peach cultivation, that the recipe from the Horticulturist, recommending air. slaked lime to be placed around the base of the tree, is, to say the beet of it, a very uncertain and fallible remedy; because in a few days the lime loses its strength, and deceives the orchard ist with a fancied check, while all stammer the grub is fatally doing his worst beneath the limo Please publish my receipt, which I assert to be infallible: Ist. If you plant out an orchard of young trees, first examine them above the roots, and see that there aro no traces of the grub, or wounds made in the bark by the punctures of the mother insect. Whether there be any or not, to make all sure, brush-wash for 6 or inches the trunk, above the roots, with a sc.lu tion strong as lye—at least—of potash and water; then wrap round the trunk, extending about 6 inches upward from the roots, a cover ing of common coal-tar paper, such 'as is used for house roofing; gently tighten the covering or sheath with a cotton string or woollen yarn ; then plant ;—and I'll engage the mother fly can never lay an egg in that trunk ; and if she can't do that, you may be certain there can be no grubs or larva. As the trees grow, from time to time, say spring and fall, loosen the binding if tight. 2d. If your tree is older, and infested with grubs, death will surely ensue to it if you are not prompt in applying my second infallible remedy, which is this : In the month of April, or if neglected, in May, or afterwards, serape away the soil from the trunk round the tree, down to the roots,. With a sharp pruning knife out out pretty freely the diseased bark, and along with it the maggots, many of which you will perhaps find an inch in length. Spare not the trunk ; the poison of the grub is worse than the blade of the knife. Hav ing cleansed the trunk as well as practicable, give it a brush of the potash solution. After a feW days look, and if you see, as I think you will, that the eggs, the larvre and the borers are pretty well done for, have at hand a few feet or yards of common straw rope, which you wrap round the trunk from the roots upwards, to about six inches from the surface of the soil. Then close the earth around, leaving a few inches of the straw sheathing above ground. If you, do this, I'll guarantee no mother fly will put any eggs in that tree. If you choose it, you may use the tar-paper in lieu of straw. To make all sure, open out your covering when frost comes, and see if any worms have escaped your knife in the spring. You need not put back the cover ing till next spring; exposure to the winter does good. If you follow the ablive simple directions with such other little attentions as your good sense will suggest, you may rely upon having healthy and longlived trees and Bound fruit. Yours, &o. ALEX. The following despatch dated, Monday, gives , - an account of the enthusiastic manner in which' Gov. A. H. Reeder was received byhis friends and fellow citizens at his old home. It shows that the worst description of the niarauding and ruffianly spirit of the invading Missourians did not misrepresent them : - 7 The Hon. A. H. Reeder, Governor of Kansas, arrived here to-day from the West, and met a vet y enthusiastic reception from his friends and neighbors. Ho reached Phillipsburg at noon, - and was there met and escorted to the Court House square, in Elston, by a large concourse of citizens of all parties, aecompqnied by the Hasten Baud. Oa arriving at the Court House, Gov. Roeder was welcomed by the citizens with hearty cheers, and a formal welcome then extend ed to him, in an eloquent and impressive speech, by the lion. J. M. Porter, who complimented Gov. Reeder on the manly and courageous, as well as able manner in which he had discharged the duties - of his difficult and responsible °Moe. He went into a hasty narrative of the growth and progress of the slave question, attrionting its dangerous and threatening character at the present time to the fanatical abolitionists of the North, but admitting also that slavery men had in their turn became as fanatical and wrong as the abolitionists themselves. He went through he old routine of apology for the South, say ing that they had slavery entailed upon them, and asserting in full the broadest pro slavery claims, declared that Gov. Reeder had done his duty ably and would and should be sus tained, both by Pennsylvania and the country at largo. Gov. Reeder, in reply, expressed in a feeling manner and eloquent terms the grateful impres sions made upon him by the warm and enthusi astic reception given to him by so large an as sembly of his fellow citizens. He referred to the reports of fraud and outrage, upon the part of slavery men, in the Kansas election, and em• phatically confirmed the very worst statement of them which bad preceded his arrival. Ho Raid his opinions on the subject of popular sovereign ty had undergone no change, but that the con duct of the people of the border counties of the North Missouri bad astounded and amazed him, by their reckless disregard of laws, compacts, and constitutions; that the territory of Kansas, in her late election, bad been invaded by a reg• ular organized array, armed to the teeth, who took posoession of their ballot boxes and made a legislature to suit the purposes of the pro slavery party. Kansas was subdued, subjugated, and con quered by armed men from Missouri, hut her citizens were resolved never to give up the fight for their freedom, and the independence of their soil from foreign control nod interference. The State of Missouri would be called upon to dim vow all sympathy with these border ruffians. If she refused, the South would he called upon to discountenance her. If the South refuse, the solemn duty would devolve upon the North to take up the matter, so that the rights of her sons who had Flouted in Kansas, on the faith of solemn compacts, shall be vindicated and sus• tained. lie declared that the accounts of the fierce outrages and wild violences perpetrated at the election, published in the northern papers, were in no wise exaggerated. Ho concluded by saying that Kansas was now a conquered country —conquered by force of arms—but that her cit izens were resolved never to yield their rights, and relied upon the North to aid them, by de monetrations of public sentiment, and all other legal means, till they shall be fully and trium• phantly vindicated. paring his opeech.
