A new national holiday is proposed by a com mittee of the Pennsylvania Historical Society. The committee in their report recommend the celebration of the anniversary of the adop ts" the Constitution of the United States as a National Festival by the American peo ple. The report further suggests the anm varsary of its formal ratification by the Conven tion, which took place September 17th, 1.8 i , as the proper time for its celebration, as Washing ton, who preßidod over the deliberations, recom mended it to the people in a communication signed on that day. Jellieon, who at once proceeded to the place, whioh they reached about Beven o’clock last evening. In the presence of a large they pro ceeded to examine tho plaoe where the infant had been discovered, and, horrible to relate, found seven bodies, consisting of the entire French family ! Their skulls were all broken in, and the legs of the old man Frenob and his wife were broken, so that they coaid be doubled up and forced into tho whole, which was three or four feet deep. They were laid in a heap, the father and mother at the bottom, and the children on top. The babe was %bout fifteen months old, and the oldest child about fifteen years old. There were three girls and two boys. The children were much decayed, but the parents were still sound, and were easily recognized by those who had known them. There Is not the least doubt but what the Hubbards are guilty of this wholesale and damn, iog murder. It is almost too horrible for belief, but the facts are as above stated, and the con elusion is irresistable. The Hubbards are all in jail. Mrs. Hubbard will be examined to-day. There seems to have been no other motive than the obtaining wbat few worldly goods this poor family possessed, which were not worth over fifty dollars! How Hot ib Hell ?—We published an ao oount of the Rev. Father Walworth, a C&tholio priest, who some days ago undertook to demon strate that'lleU was situated in the inßide of this earth, commencing about twenty-one miles from the surface, where granite begins to melt. He also affirmed that heat was the predominant characteristic of this abode of the damned, and illustrated the proposition by reference to the uniformly high temperature of everything which had reached us from that quarter of our globe. Tkp Hey. gentleman cited what he called a well authentioated miracle, related by one of the Fathers, that God once permitted a certain re ligious person to receive a visit for a few mo ments from one of the damned. In the course of the interview, the latter thrust his hand into a vase of water in the apartment, which was thereby so powerfully heated, that abrocze can dlestiok having been plaoed in it waß immediate ly melted. As there are not a few doubting Thomases, 'wo will gi*e another that ought to prove a clincher. It is the opinion of the ec centric Eurohard on the same subject. He was onoe passing through a furnace with a theo logical pupil, when he stopped and gazed into the white heat of the melted iron. Said he, in his deep, solemn, mußical voice, “ do you wish to know how hot HelU|? I'll tell you. Hell is ao much hotter than t&e fiery furnace, that sop poßing a being who could lire in Hell, should jump thence into that furnace, he mould freeze to death in five minutes." The. objections arise princi pally from the developments made by the den tists of Now Tork, who held several meetings last fall, to taka action in the case of Dr. Beale. Now, any one who read the experience of those physicians could not help being struck wit seldom fatality which eeemcd to attend the ad ministration of these agents. Indeed, one medi cal man who is said to have used it in 1,600 ca ses testified that in no instance in his practice had it proved fatal. Tbeir evidence only went to prove that its effects upon the minds were snlh that no person-and females ,a particular Should permit a dentist to administer it unless in tho presence of a friend. The following ex traot will show how seldom fatal results flow from its administration: Tho most Berious objections'to tho nso cf chloroform, whether in Bnrgory or midwifory, is tho danger which is snpposed to attend its u6e In several oases death has followed the use of Chloroform so closely that the drug has appeared to be tho sole and direct oause of death. In most of the cases the appearance has been deceptive, but in others, death may have re suited from the use or abuse of Chloroform alone, vet when wo find that in one hospital in London alone, that or St. Bartholomew, more than thir tv-fivo thousand persons have been sulmit ted to Us full influence with only one accident of importance-that in Edinburg more than 400 000 doses have been Bold by tho druggiaU to the surgeons of that city, and only one death from its uso has resulted—when we refleot bow generally it has been used in all parts of the world by persona who had to obtain their knowledge of its effects by experiment, and were therefore unskilled in its administration—remem bering also that it has very frequently been used in an impure stato, and combined with deleteri ous subßtancea —tho wonder Ib, not that some few deaths may ho traced to the use of a new reme dy but that they should have been so few. Con sid'erable doubt still bangs over the few excep tional cases, for death will sometimes ocour in the most unexpected, inexplicable manner un der the most trivial operations. Patients have died suddenly jast before some contemplated operation was commenced, and had chloroform been given, it would assuredly have been Bet down ns the fatal agent. Several such oases maybe found in the pamphlets of Dr. Simpson, two of them being especially remarkable, as they by what may he termed a mere accident narrowly escaped being tho first cases in which chloroform was tried ; death followed a simple puncture in one oase, a simple inoision in the other, and in both without any apparent oause. Had chloroform been given to those patients, de*itb would doubtless have been attributed to its influence, and probably Ua use would have been entirely abandoned. jgvffi* Although flour is higher, other provisions and fuel are considerably cheaper at present than they were in 1?37.
