THE ATTEMPTED HESCOIE, : r -, , ArpOlNTHlHT. —Governor Pollock has appoint*' Tbe aHempt on part of the negroes of our ed. Milton M’Olellond, Esq , of our city, one of eity to.take from Mr. Boyd hisMavc, last week, bis Aids, wtth the rank of Licnt. Col. We saw has aroused no slight degree of indignation the commission, and it is all right. The ap among our citizens. It was a lawless mob;—an polntment is a good one, and Mr. MC. will be attompt to kidnap.a woman who was content to 1 found ready to do his duty whon the Governor abide in the family where she had been raised needs his Aid, right gallantly and well treated. If tho character of our olty for good r*der, industry and obedience to the law is to bo destroyed by a secret association of negroes, banded together to raise a mob every time a southern gentloman passes through our streoto, it is time tho people should know it, and decide whether they will submit to it. Millions of dollar? have'been invested in oar railroads and canals ; r»nd it is proposed to in vest millions more in the improvement of the Ohio river. The aim of thiß outlay is to bring through our city and State a largo share of the travel and irado of the South and West. These effortß to increase our prosperity Trill bo useless if travel ers are to be assailed by lawless mobs, and forced to fly from the city to escape personal violence, and prevent the kidnapping of what they hold as their property under the laws of their States. One ouch caso of lawless violenoe would deter thousands from visiting this city. Shall our prosperity and reputation as a com muity be given over to the control of an irre sponsible mob of negroes, who do little for the prosperity of the city themselves? Mr. Boyd, we are informed, designed to re main some days in the city, and make some pnr chases of carriages and other goods. A house hold servant, well content with her position in his family, and desiring to remain there, is sought to be kidnapped, and forced against her will into that condition of precarious subsistence which is the fate of so many others of her race and color in this State. The law offered a peaceful means by whioh her titlo to liberty could have been tested, had she or her friends desired it. But a mob and force is preferred, because that woold leave her no choice; and take her forcibly from a comfortable home and kind friends. Does any one believe ber condi tion hero would have been better, or half as good, as at her home in Kentucky? Ia it not kidnappiog in tho worst sense to tear a female from her Lome and friends, and compel her to live among strangers and in poverty ? Is Buch a mob law to be endured in our city under tho specious pretenco of a lovo of liberty? Vet white sympathizers can be found to applaud this outrage upon a peaceable traveler, and upon Iho good order and prosperity-of our city. They are not numerous however, such mobs in jure tho business and the city, no One can doubt To call this a venal view of the case is as absurd as it would be to cal! it venal to build a railroad or improvo a river, in order to attract travel and trade this way. Wo are giad to find that tho editor of tho Gazette , not withstanding his strong nnti-slavery proclivities, tikes a similar view of tho matter. No good oititen can do otherwise. The character of our city should not be stained, nor its business in jured by negro mobs. Its business has suffered severely enough from other causes within tho last year, without aading the curse and dis grace of nc-gro riots. Wo hope the next riot of the kind will be suppressed by the strong arm of the law ; or be met with plenty of woll charged revolvers in ready and resolute hands. Wo are do friends of slavery.
