Falsi Pbetbxceb.— Frank Wolff, the proprie tor of a boarding house, in the Fifth Ward, yes terday made information before Aid. Parkinson, against one of his boarders, named John Miller, a driver belonging to the Exoelsior Omnibus line, for obtaining boarding to the amount of $18,75, by falsely representing that the Company owed hint a certain snm, upon securing which he would pay for lodgings. He received the money, but afterwards forgot to pay his land lord, who, thereupon, thinking he had just grounds to suppose payment never was intended, desired him to be arrested for fraud. A warrant was accordingly issued by the magistrate. Promotion or as Editor. —We are pleased to see that in the distribution of honors Governor Pollock has not forgotten the Editorial fraterni ty. Colonel Irwin is a gentleman of great ability and varied uttrdamems, and if ever - bis services should bo needed in bis military ca pacity, fete would do infinite credit to the Cover 1 nor’e, appointment. r Destadctiob op a Daks nr Fire. —We re gret-to learn that tbe barn of oar friend James M'Garrgle, in Baldwin township, four miles from the city, was toTvly destroyed by fire, on Thursday night, about 9 .’clock, together with a largo quantity of n °d feed which was in the stable. It was uudoubutily set on fire; one of tbe incendiary’s tracks were afterwards dis covered iu the soow, as be went to and from tbe barn. Tbe foot prints were followed some dis tance, but were loet in tbe woods. Mr. M’Garr gte's loss will be four or five hundred dollars. Mb. Chester, the Manager of the Seventh street Soup House, states that yesterday, for the first time, tbe Society were able to supply all applicants with provisions. Heretofore the supply of food has given out before all were served, but yesterday, although a larger number of persons than any previous day applied, every onc.was served with a portion of food, of soup and bread. In addition to tbe usual variety of food, nearly two barrels of mackerel were dis tributed.
