Latta, the' Inv:a lone inventor, apdhis partnere, andlrom the gentlemanly Clerk of the Institrite. After which, Milethlreenwood the able Chief Englinier, called out at an early hour in the ' morning the entire Fire Department of Cincinnati and caused the new Steam Fire Engine called the "Citizens' Gift" Lobe put in fun operation. Thar Committee cannot speak' in terms which would be too laudatory Of the Fire Department of that city ; it is, Indeed, the most admirably arranged and conducted they havether had„the pleasure of examining, and is in every respect what It Should bet; ._pos theeed of an admirably .situated Alarm Bell; In rein-teen minutes the entire Department (consiating of a therm Fire /Mho and thirteen hood anginas, situated in different parts of the city,) were upon: the ground indicated by the bell. The Chief thigineer had the fire In the Steam Engine lighted, and in seven minutes she threw wetter. The engine may be briefly described thus: It h a double acting engine with two Arpin& cylinders, working two els Inch pumps, two feet stroke—making about ten revolutions to the mioute. The two hind wheels of the swine (while the apparatus is stationary) acting as fly Welds to the hind axle, being made fast to the wheels by o " r etrieve coupling ". to the centre, theists in propelling the apparatus when in progress to and from afire. The holler lea vertical furnace with a "worm tube" inside, the water being Or the tube and the fire fassioground It. A "doctor" used,to supply the engine with water; there Is also an air pump to form a vecnum In the boller,(bY mane °rebirth steam is of course ranch more rapidly generated,) which Is worked by two men front theinstani the fire is darted until the steam operetes on the "doctor." In front of the en gine Sea large tank, containing a sufficient supply of water for the "doctor," by mount of which the engine oar be worked until the auctions are attached. On each side of the column, too inches by about four end shelf feet to length, used as air chambers, which are eortnectedat the bottom by a semi.threular four inch pipe (around the tank) with six outlet or openings to make nttachmeoth; below, by means of • different pipe, are two large openings for lac ger attachments. Thus the engine ie enabled to throw fix threothsarier inch streams, or two one and • quarter inch atreamarer cue two inch stream to almost any required dir tanee. The general appearance of the engine can be beat undenftood from the lithograph reprthentation herewith at. tadued, which is weight is It is that of a large locomotive—its weight is four tone—it rests upon three wheels and can be readily drown by four horn. This ea, gine I. much superior to the original one, and le yet sus. eeptlble of improvement. In epeaking of the operations of the engine, your committee only date what they saw,and are entirely diliaffed that If. necessity he ti required It, water could have been thrown much more speedily. With regard tothe entire sueass of the steam englne, your committee beg to quote from the ,Report of the thief Engineer of the Chr eland.' Fire Department for the year ending April 00814. In speaking of theold apparatus, or "Steam Engine N.,. 1," and the ono cow known as the " Citizen's Gift," he says The present steam engine has been In the service of the 1122f ... partment for over silteen months, and Harry doobt at the dale of my let report of the practicability Orffilrtvention for protecting property from &Arnett= by fire, it must now be removal. The triumphant unease of this invention has le completely satiseed every one that has then it Iraperation. not only as a meansof greater hecurity to proper, but in point of economy far beyond anything now in use. This has been so =ingest that I have teen enabled, through the liberality of of our deaths and • Insurance Companies, to raise a enflicient eon, to pay for anothei new steam engine, which his just been finished and now in the service of the city. the Th h e o authorized com to be contracted for by your body, cairm ne an of e mittee on Fire Department and myealf thought proper to defer connecting for until the one recently built was fin ished and tested, desiring to see it to use, on that Harty Int . prothments were to be made, we could avail ourselves of them in ilk construction of the new one authorized to be built by a resolution of your body," from which it appears that the !authorities and people of that city are so fully sat isfied of the usefulness and economy of the steam fire en gine, that they will soon be poperet4 of three of raid en gine. From the sane valuable report we learn that the expense of the entire D.partmant Of Cincinnati for lag year NW $77,111 63, from, which 'seethe) , deduct $12.275 63, - whlrth was incidental; the Department Ls conducted on the pay system. The expenses of the steam fire engine, with which we have particularly to do, and to the examination or. which we are directed, including all incidental expenses,, the expenses of hones, was $7,576 $4. The oast of the engine would be about $lO,OOO. The expenses, there fore, for the first year, would be about $17,576 3L This would be, in the opinion of yonr Committee, a liberal esti mate of the expense. The enact°, would of course have to be in the hands of a competent engineer, and ladatents enr played and paid for that purpestgell or which expense a re Inaltded to the foregoing estima. The steam fine engine would be equivalent to five or six of our present band en gines, and could be well =pelted with water by three of our city Plugs in place of the elletiol2 new in use in Cincinnati. for which purpose additional plugs (already mush needed) would he indispensably necessary- The expense at first nee me to be large oompared with the present eppropriatione of the city , but all things oonsidered En gine—peroe of purchthing en many lots for the present ne Houses—the rant amount annually contributed robin rarity by our citizens, ko, It will perhaps be tenni to be better economy to precure a diffident number of Steam Firs Engines. This is however a gondol which should to left to the wisdom of Councils, - and one over which they have code:Seely the contrbl. • As a method of extinguishing fires, the Steam Flee En. glue has no equal. Six streams, such ashes been described, all throwing at once and with Noel force, at any distance from the Engine, with uncethin^ moldiness, is a &Mare tuna never before acbieved—anS the force and effect of the mingle two Inch stream must: be then to be teethed. Such a column of water thrown steadily has more effect than can well be imagined. • Thar committee, therefore, unhesitatingly recommend to you, and through you to COIII)Cilg, en appropriation for the purchthe nod support of at lean. one Steam Fire Engine— believing It to be In every wey tenet ralettlated for the exen gatehment of fires, and asaffording the largest rammer to the lives and property of their fellow entrees. addition to width it will (pertially at Peat) relieve that large and merthernie class of their fellow silicone who have re long, esi generously and so faithfully discharged the onerous labors of active Firemen from the meet laborious part of - Maur duties. AVG TlB7 16 HUCKSTS.Rs.—A general grumbling has been going on - for some time at the high price of vegetablei, fruit, de., In our market. These articles have became to dear that people In moderate circumstances can do nothing more thiif look erat them—an attempt to purebue by any one who does not possess an "incom e," being ooneliered ridiculous and foolish In the extreme. Several canseshave operated to bring about this disagreeable state of affair,— the long drooth among others,—but we believe the princi pal and main reason is the fart that more than two-thirds of the "green things" offered for sale in our market, are porehaard previously by hgeksters, who, by this meter, keep up the prices of such Plicies at as high a standard as talky plain.. These forestallgre completely regulate the market, and not a peck of potatoes or a quart of frult can be prooured unless an addition, in many cases of a hundred per dot upon the farmer's charges, paid. We ales hear it stated that not content wHh robbing in this manner, their measures are nearly all deficient, and will no come up to the City Gauger'. standard. We have ordinances passed expressly to prevent all com- Vsints such as the present, and we would Ilk, to see them Iltorced in a vigorous and energetic manner. Let every hucky, who le detected In attempting to purchase articles during market hours, to sell again, be arrested and dealt with In the most summary manner, and we are quite cer tain AI a fall in vegetables will soon ensue. THIS BitELSFORD MONtISSEISH—Ws were shown yesterday, at the box office of the Theatre, a representation of the monument to be erected to theisford. It was de signed by Mr. Matthew Lawton, foreman In W. W.Wallicee Marble Works, and is a neat and appropriate affair. It Is to be a plain column, thirty feet high, resting on a carved tau& placed upon a redid block of marble, and surmounted by a Roman helmet and a laurel wreath. From under the wreath, a spangled Moak, emblematic of the profession, hangs down. On the front of the mlumn, will be recaptur ed In bold relief the symbolical mask, plume and sword‘ beneath which will be engraved the name, and other in• scrlptions which may be adopted by the committee. Manager Foster having offered to appropriate hie Thuha one night, for the purpose of raising funds to he devoted to the erection of this testimonial, the committee have select ed next Monday evening for that purpose, on which-ems sion s splendid allegorical representation of the monument will be exhibited between the pieces. Over the design, which will be painted full size on the scene, will appear an angel, bearing In one hand a scroll with the inscription, "To the memory of our departed friend." • . .
