In minutely examining the quill pen in the act of writing, it will bo seen that We a&ionis compound, consisting, first, of a gentle yielding backward action immediately above the ulb of the pen, and, second, tbe “ scissor*” action, or spreading open of tbe points to permit the flowof the ink. This compound movement—which steel pens hitherto never have had—gives to the quill its flexibility, and that peculiar springy play which Is so agreeable to tbe baud, and which seems to unit the action of the mascics qf the lingers; yielding, as it does, to the slightest pressure, with out cramping the hand. The efforts of all stoel pen makers havo been directed to tho attainment of thlsersential qual ity* of flexibility, and they have had recourse to an innu merable variety of cracks and piercings to attain it. The ioventoreof tho Patent Amalgam Pen found, from a series of.experiments, that tho wholeproctlcocf the trade had in this mpcct been erroneous—that no combination of •‘cracks’* and “piercings” could producethe desired action, if tbe ordinary form of the stedpen were adheredto. Thte point being gained, they avoided the plan hitherto adopted for attaining flexibility, ami gate a peculiar form to the metal, by hich they managed to combine the “eciwofs” action of the ordinary steel pen with tho agreeable flexibil ity of tbequiU. Tho second difficulty to he overcome was of less mngpitudo, but still of great Importance to the con sumers of steel pons. Every one is aware of tho corrosive action of the Ink on tho ordinary steel pen. Even with tho greatest rare, it speedily destroys the delicately smooth sur face-of tho pen. 8o serious a drawback la this from the utility of the stoel pen, that thousands era Induced to pur chase gold pens, at an enormous cost, almost exclusively becAuro of tha anti-corrosive quality of that metal. Tho inventors have removal this evil by their compound metal, which poMeasosoli tho necessary qualities of steel, withthe additional merit of resisting the chemical action of the ink. Thete Pens will last more than twenty times longer <Ann the Sled Pm, thusrendenng them the cheapest everintroduced. For sale by ' W. 8.
