Tho Penitentiary was opened Tot tho reception of convicts
on the Lsi of July, 1820. Since that lime, the number of

making a total of 1,740 convicts received since tho opening
of the institution. Or this number, 1.123 were, discharged
by expiration of term of sentence; 325 by pardon; 82 by

The Penitentiary,. under the skillful management of if*
present officers, is a self sustaining insulation.. During tie
year 1353, although the profits of the prison labor were not
so large as in some previous years, and. tho price of proti.

In looking over the statistics published with the report,
we find many facta worth noticing. Tho prison district is
composed of twenty-five of tho Western counties of this
State- As we have before said, the prison-on the first of
January contained 201 prisoners; 79 of this nombeare from
this county, 19 from Blair, 12 from Westmoreland, 14 from
Cambria, 8 from Erie, and 7 from Washington and Beaver,

Mnrccr, Venango, Crawford and Clearfield; two from But*

from the United States Courts, which hold their sessions in
this city .“All the counties comprising tho district are repre

the year 1853, tblrty-rir prisoners were received from this
county, fifteen from Blair, eight .from Cambria,-and num.
bers varying from one to four, from all tbo remaining conn
