It is filled with exaelleut matter, comprising 3c!ect Tales and Poetry; Foreign News; Congressional Nqwb; Domesiio News, from all parts of tho Union; Editorials; .and a littlo of everything. In addition to the above, wo give a fall Market Deport, prepared with great care, and we can confidently recommend those Interested to rely upon what U sets forth. ' The Gazette and the Mayoralty. . The editor of the Gazette seems perfectly de . lighted with tho Whig and Antimasonic candi date for Mayor; and is evidently anxious to have some one attack Mr. Volz, that tho old bellicose may have tho privilege of replying. We will gratify our neighbor with a littlo open ' ing for fnri, and something to write about. The fact is we havo been so busy of late with smoko consumers, iron manufactures, nows, statistics, _ and other matters of general interest, that wo havo rather neglected our neighbor of the Ga zette. We must give him amb occasionally, ob wo do all other matters that need reform and correction. We think a “ smoko consumer" ap plied to the Gazette would dear away some .of its smoke and fogyism, and enable it to giro more light to its readers. ' But to Mr. Ferdinand E. Volz. - Ilowdoes Mr. Gazette like his masonry. We can’t say wo have 1 any special objection to him on that account. But tho accredited organ of Antmasonry might,, we should suppose, take a different view of tho matter. Has the Gazette resolved to abandon . all its long cherished principles? If so, when will ho abandon tho Maine law cause, and va-, rious, other subjects that he advocates now. What thinks tho Gazette, ton', of the shabby manner in which Mr. Sawyer has been treated.; A staunch whig, a good eitizen, ono of tho men; who has not only grown up with tho city, but; his helped to build op the city and its business; but he is tbrnst aside to make room for o young, man. Mr. Sawyer was a candidate, seeking the office by fair meanß ; yet tho Gazette seems to, rejoice at his defeat. Last year, the whigs elected their candidate for Mayor. He-was every way competent, gen-; tlcmanly, intelligent; trne to.his party and his principles ; and he has made as good on officer as any Whig that can bo fonnd. Under snob cir cumstances, he might reasonably expect and claim a re-nomination. Yetho too is tbrnst aside for n new man, and a much younger man ; and the Gazelle seems delighted with tho resalt. Had Mr. Biddle been re-nominated, wo would havo .helped to defeat him with a hearty good will. But be certainly deserved something different from his own party. Usago, custom, fair-deal ing, and everything else uro thrown-overboard in order to give tho Gazette tho pleasure of sup porting a “ free and accepted mason,” of high rank in the order. And the Journal and Ameri can nre compelled to raise his name at the head of their columns, much against their will. We ore not opposed to masonry ourselves; bat we like to See alittle consistency in those who are. We hope tho democrats will give ns a good Candidate next week, and then wo will go in for city reform, and the rale of tho people. SEW TORE HBBAID. The Herald openly announces itself as the lead ing organ of tho disorganize^),' and opponents of the administration in .New York, and in tho United States Senate. TTe hope tho small fac tion, that has thus foolishly undertaken to em.- barrssstbe administration of Gen. Pierce, nro proud of their lender. Capt. Bennett has cer tainly gotup a. large company in a short time, but we ore unable to See what good or harm this new party can do, Gen. Pierce’s administration is os cordially supported by the press, and the people-nil over the country 'ns any administra tion has been for half a century. A party, with Capt. Had snoh a polioy been. adopted years ago, Pennsylvania wonld have been much better sup plied with railroads than she is at the present time; and a considerable portion of- them would have been built by the money of other States.
