Dravga Consys.—The Star, of Wednesday says that all the districts have been reported, except llicGuires and Frankfort, and from what we can gather from the returns, It appears Bum. IL Wilson, our candidate for District attorney, and Samuel R. Dunlap, one candidate for Trea surer, era defeated. Whether any morn of our candidates for county Offices aro defeated or not, we are not able to decide. WAN:mares Corsrrr.----The Rains says: In telligence received this (Wednesday) morning, of the result of Yesterday's election in this coun ty indicates that the Democratic County Ticket, with theexception, perhaps, of our candidata for Treasurer, Is elected by triumphant majorities. Our Assemblymen are doubtless elected by three or four hundred majority ! The majority for the State ticket will be about ono hundred and fifty. blatectu Cocsrv.—We learn from the Free Democrat, that the whole Democratic ticket has boon clotted, by meijorities ranging from one hundred to three hundred. KITTAIMING, Oct. 12, 1852. • M mus. PHILLIPS & OlLLMOlLL—Genikrnal I have the pleasure to inform you, that our whole democratic ticket has curled in this coon• ty ; three townships are to hear from, but we know enough to place our democratic majority, at about or over 200. Clover's majority for Senator in this county may not be 200, but bordering on it. • In baste, before the mail closes. Yours, Zoo., ROBERT ORR. The Cleveland Pluiadeater, of Wednesday af ternoon, says : From the partial returns received we should infer the Fusion Ticket had (in Cuyahoga coun ty) in the main succeeded, backed up, as it was, by Whig, Maine Law, Woman's Rights, and Sore head parties. Still the Democracy made a noble fight, and in the county have done better than ever. The news from other parts of the State is cheering, We have no doubt carried our entire State ticket by a large majority, and shall have the Legislatdre without a doubt. The True Democrat, Free Soil, of yesterday morning, says : The returns of this (Cuyahoga) county leave no doubt of the success of the People's ticket, with - the exception of Treasurer. Wo have no means of coMpating majorities or minorities. The vote is light—scarcely two-thirds in the county. The returns from the State render it certain that the Democratic ticket has succeeded by a very large majority. Many strong Whig holds have given way—few have held their own. Myers and Barney are undoubtedly elected. The vote for Lewle is as large as that given for Barrere, from present indications. The temper ance issue has resulted disastrously to the wbigs. The Maine Law democrats appear to have stuck to their party. ANOTHER Samoa LIGHT GONE OUT.—The Boston papers announce the sudden death of Hon. Simon Greenleaf, Law Professor in Cam bridge. College. Mr. Greenleaf was formerly from Maine, having practised law for many years in Portland, with distinguished success. Plain, practical, and yet learned, while he carried the judgment of the intelligent with him, his superb common sense was almost omnipotent with a jury, whether they appreciated ilia learning or not. He so distinguished himself in Maine as in eminent lawyer, that he was invited to the law School at Cambridge, where lie filled the nit and the places of Story and others. If second to Story at all, it was not in learning, or t tr zeneral acqualtittince both in the civil and feadal laws, as his varied works are showing— and:hliltuittlfill 'be - deeply regretted by all, the more, at his viols; fr o m his sudden death, are left incorairste: • Thesadden deaths of so many distinguished men, are fearful admonitions of the limite of w e , h t . the -eery tddst - of earthly este,em and earthly honors--N r. The foregoing extract denotes intelligent ob servation, and when considered with reference to the foreign character of rho writer, in all that might warp his judgment, or direct his inclina tions. Is entitled to the fullest credit. Now, for the benefit of some of my old friends with whom you are in daily intercourse, and who hero written or requested me to write, and for the benefit of such others as may be looking westwnrd. I will give the reasons in chief, which must lead iveryinspartini mind to the sumo con clusions arrived at by the editor of the Courier. In the first place, we aro seated on the west bank of the Mississippi riser, about mid-way between St.. Louis and St. Pant, where we are as effectually circumscribed by our lead region, as you aro in old Pittsburgh. by pont of coal, and the one equally as inexhaustible as the other. In both of these important advantages, we are further sustained by another which may justly he considered a e still more material, viz a back country extending clear access the State to the Missouri river. which. in point of agricultural attractions, will bear no unfavorable comparison with the choicest garden spots of the world. With a troll rich and productive to superabun dance, unite a eurfeco of high rolling and almost uninterrupted prairie lands, and yon will rat once account for the swelling tide of emigration which pours with a ceaseless flood into its bosom. And speaking of prairie lands, allow me to where to a very erroneous notion entertained of them by myself, prior to my coming westward, and doubt less still entertained by very many others in the old States. It is that prairie lands and low, swampy, marshy lands are one and the same. No idea can bo more erroneous. Tbe betostifnl ly undulating priiirie lands of Northern lowa. are as dryin point of desirability, as the choicest farms of Washington or old Westmoreland, and the air that breathes over them, is as pure and bracing, as that which fans the " Summit " of your own boasted Alleghenies. But to our town again, of which I do not wish to lose sight. " The-sienna terminus of the road under no tice (says the Courier) is on the banks of the htissistippl, at the extreme northwest corner of Illinois, and opposite the city of Dubuque. In lowa s "..&c. To understend this virtual terrains nation, It behooves you to knowthit Dubuque is the western terminus of the great Illinois Cen tral Railroad, which, when fully completed, will be the longest in the world, I believe, and is not surpassed by any even in eontemplation save the incomparable Pacific echeme. To rea ch its western terminus, this great road passes through Galena, which town is the terminus of the road spoken of by the Courier, so. that in truth, the terminus of the Illinois Central on the east bank of the Mississippi, and immediately opposite Dubuque, may be said to be the virtual terminus of the Galena and Chicago Union Road also. So rapidly is the Illinois Central Road progressing, that in the early part of the antamor we flattered ourselves with the confident hope of seeing a locomotive in active service the present fall, from this place as farinto the interior as Galena, which is situated on Fever river, six miles from the Mississippi, and eighteen from Dubuque. Workmen have been in constant employ during the whole summer at the depot, and are actively engaged at this time in pushing it forward to a speedy completion. So you will perceive that the day is but a short way off when yon can take the cars on Federal street for Dubuque, and leave them only to change trains, ere you will be landed opposite the 4aeen City of the North west, where the most splendid steam ferry on western waters will be awaiting your conveni ence to convey your across the river to partake of our hospitalities. It will be quite au fait, whilst speaking of this steam ferry, to note the following item, viz: The river at this point is full a mile wide, and is crossed in four minuies, or nearly so. DEMOCRATIC TarCXPII is Catrroaata..—Each successive State whose verdict is tendered, swells the list of democratic triumphs. We had scarce ly recorded the brilliant victory in 13eorgja when the arrival from California announced a similar result there. It is thus that State after• State expresses its adherence to the united deMocrat le cause, and responderna terms of unmistakeable npproval of the wise policy of the administra tion. We gladly congratulate our friends in the Pacific State upon their unshaken devotion to democracy. Not only were all the houses unroofed; but several of them demolished. Persons thus left homeless had to occupy some of the public bnildings,in Bagases. The earthquake was- re peated, though with less damage, otx the Bth of September, and the ehock continued with more or less violence almost every day. OH' Hon. Edward A. At a recent camp meeting he is said to have declared himself ready to vote for the Maine Law in the absence of anything better. but expressed his belief that nothing abort, of n total extirpation of the article from the face of the earth would effect the desired °Neat.
