It contains the able letter of - Secretary Manor 'to Mr. Lituaratsss, the Ad dress of the State Democratic Conamittee, a well collated money article, a carefitily prepared mar ket report, a full report of the Premiums award ed at the State Fair, and editorial and miscella peouslnatter, which cannot fail to please the reader.- It is for sale at our counter. The leurnal; Gazette, mad Everything Else. We wish we had a half dozen more whig pa- Teta in this city. It is so much easier to bring dotna the game when firing into a flock. The Journal says our reason given for pub -:- !Whin' g Judge Shannon's opinion in the Itiary Ann ease is "shabby." Now, we had notldng mhatever toil° with the matter of buying the Journal, When it was "sold" the other day. We give OM Journal just three days, Sunday exclu ded, to recall that "shabby" word. The Gaulle of yesterday is a mere reprint of nearly all the al:lndere its editor has been able to • invent; ofborrow, for the last six weeks, ,on the :`:democratic party generally, and the democratic , ticket parti9ularly. Every one of those slanders have been refuted in the columns of the "Post," ss fast as they appeared. We have shown that the State is less in debt naw than when Governor Bigler came into office. W 8 bare oltomi that the lettings of .00ntroots on . the Portage road, had been made with a careful regard for the interests of the State; and on better - . terms than the work on the Central road. We have shown that a committee of investigation, after examining the whole conduct of the Canal Commissioners in regard to the Portage road, had on oath declared that the charges against - the -officers were utterly false and groundless , and that they originated in private malice. We have shown that the democratic party stands upon its long-tried and well-known principles ; and permits no newand extraneous issues to dis turb its harmony. All then things we have Shown clearly, again and again ; yet the Ga:eur, instead of attempting to reply to our facts and figures, and conclusive proofs, merely repeats his slanderous assertions, without adducing a particle of proof to sustain them. We have too much faith in the intelligence, good sense, and &meaty of the people of this county, to suppose that the course of the GoeUe can damage any one, except the Whig candidates themselvee. . . The People of this county will require something more reliable to command their belief, than the Inert' reckless assertions of a paper that derives all its respectability, as a political journal, from thofitht that : it was formerly edited by an able and powerful writer, who was in the habit of giving facts and figures, and arguments, to prove : - Nor, In regard to Judge Shannon's charge in the school ease, the footsore simply these. The Ante charged the Jury in the case, as appears zwthe_. printed document, which frightens the litaietle so much. The counsel for the party agaireityiltom the case was ruled excepted to the eliarge, and desired that it should be written eta fell and filed. In compliance with this *peat ' , toi as was his duty, the Judge wrote net his charge. . It was only necessary to file Icier° the record was removed to the Sa me Court. The counsel concluded not to take the "case to the Supreme court at all, and of eenrse there was no occasion to file the written charge among the records. What is customary in ther'eases was done in this case. But that therelutige to the Jury was the same as that C*44, - we have bean assured is the fact by Lawyers who were in court and heard it delivered. Thiliazetta's negative testimony amounts elm plfte tbo,!bat Innen, who were not in the Cottit, at the time, did not hear this charge de liverintto the Jury. Of course not. :Mr. Camp liall'e.certifieate;that 'the written charge is not on file t : !aeons . .rnerely:tbat the writ of error hi** been abandoned, there was no occasion to DR. MgCLINTOCIe w We would lay before our readers once more, a fact in the public life of our omilidatei-for Senate, which aloneproverilds:fitneen , lor the office, and hirtscrong elaims for , the mipport of the peopliat While &Member of theieSielatUre -in 1850, Dr. bi'Clintock was , chairthan theiComniittee on Doinestiollonufao. tures. He Made - a reiort 'to the - legislature strongly in favor of the ten hour law. Extracts from that report we published a few days ago. He also appended to thatreport two-resolutions, and recommended their adoption. Those resolution! we published at the _same time. -. . The object of the resolutions was to authorize the governor of Pennsylvania to confer with the - governors, - of other 'Stated ancl'inge upon the governments of othefStaterr thesumetrannf of a similar law in relation to: -the:. hours of labor. Trio objects were to 'be Wattled 'by this. The first to secure-the permaneney - of the law by ren dering it.general .oier the country, arid thus re movinglhe main objection urged against it.. it was urged that,-if in other States, the hours -of labor: ere more than tea, a ten hour law would opertite, unjustly upon , oar capitalists and manu facturers; as they could not in that way compete miumfactureis elsewhere. the object of Dr. bl'Clintock's resolution was tb. secure the enactment of `similar. law in other 'Staten. That would benefit our own capitalists andmian ufacturers. And . rit Would also`remove the Gain objection to the law, and render it permanent. The laborer and employer were both to be bone fitted ; and the ten hour law rendered perms neat and satisfactory to all classes. . Let other States .. enact similar laws, as,some have since done, and the permanency ;of our 'own is secured. That our own is popular with the mass of the people is indicated by the fact that the Garate, instead of da zing to say a word against it, is alarmed lest Dr. Carothers may have destroyed his chances of re-election, by hiving aimed and striven to destroy its value and efficiency. The alarm is well founded. Dr. ill'Clintock deserres an elec tion ; • and we trust he will be elected by the peo ple, ;whom he has faithfully served. ANOTHER DEDIOCIUTIC VICTORY The news by telegraph announces another democratic victory. Georgia. stands firm in the democratic line. Jouswrou (Dem.) is doubtless elected Governor. The Legislature isalso demo zratic. Can any of our friends tell us from what State of the Union we have received different news, so far, this year ° Vermont, It is true, is still nominally Whig; but even there the Demo crats gained largely on any former vote; and it would be a matter of no surprise if, next year,. that State also should wheel into our ranks. We would thank our Whig friends to name one Whig State which they feel quite sure of retaining for three years longer. We are of opinion that the day may soon arrive when every State in the Union will bare a democratic Governor and Le gislature. When that day arrives, as it soon may, wo shall go in for a national jubilee of the most imposing character. It will be a day of triumph of the true principles of freedom and national prosperity ; a day long remembered in the annals of our country, and hailed with joy and flop t o by the down-trodden millions of the old world. Let our democratic, friends in Allegheny coun ty remember that tbo success of a part, at least, of our ticket, this year, will do much to hasten and secure this era of universal triumph of the people's cause—the cause of democracy. Let it be known that this strong-bold of whlggery can he redeemed, and the tidings will encourage the hearts and redouble the exertions of our friends all over the land. What has Become of the Antlwasons 1 The whig ticket issued from the Cafttte office • has the following heading: DEMOCRATIC ViIIIO TICKET. Democratic Whig Ticket! A most beautiful white blackbird. The idea of the widget attempt ing to deceive the people by assuming the name of democrats, is o joke that will afford a subject for laughter by the people long after the cam paign is over. The term "Democratic Whig " is decidedly funny. Dot what has become of poor antimasouic friends ? When they were at the head of the heap, the ticket was designated the " Antima. some and Whig Ticket ;" but it now appears that the poor antics have been cast aside. What has become of them t Rare they been cast away as useless lumber, or have they all turned demo orate? Will the editor of the Gavlte answer? if ho does not, we will have to apply to the "fif teen whiga" who induced him to change bis nutimasonic notions. We would ask him briefly what he has done with the antimasons ? And to inform the public as to the nook or corner into which he has atoned them? TITE GAZETTE AGALL—Tho Gazelle ahOunds with assertions without:proof yesterday. It as serts every thing good of Dr. Carothers, And asks us to prove that the Doctor is opposed to the public schools. We have given the state ment of his near neighbor, Mrs. Bwisshelm, in regard to Doctor Carothers, on thatenbject. Her statement contained some facts that givelreight to her testimony. We respectfullyrefer the Ga zelle to that lady for the desired information. In regard to the Ten Hour Law, we gave the record proof, which the Gazelle now, in effect, admits. One thing moro, will the Gazette pleas) admit. The aentence in our paper which made knowri to the public the charge that Dr. C. was unfriendly to public schools, was an extract from the (Th uile. Have you forgotten that, neighbor? It was an extract from yourabualre reply to Mria. Swisahelm. ONE CANDIDATE TOR THEASUILER.—It is a pleasure to us to refer to our candidatefor noun ,ty Treasurer. We have known him from early boyhood, and we can say without fear of contra diction, that a more competent, honest and hon orable man cannot be found within the wide bounds of the noble old Keystone. He is in every respect qualified to discharge the duties of the office for which he is nominated, and his gentlemanly deportment and kindness of manner, cannot fail to make him popular with every man who has business to transact at the Treastirer i s office. We, therefore, hope that no voter who Oakes a faithful and energetio officer in the Treasurer's office, will fail to vote for Captain ions Binurnonam. !twine's ftlacathres—Tha Wlruisor (England Express says that one of littasey's imprared reaping 0111 chines is now in use= Norfolk firm, and has cut a crop o oath to the entire sathrfactlon of Prince Albert. We took it " a foot" the other day, along the line of this branch of the Cleveland and Wells ville Railroad, as far up as East Liverpool and from our observation, we believe there is not a single section, nor a piece of masonry of any importance between this and the latter place, on which operatives are not now vigorously em ployed. The stone work at the month of Little Yellow Creek, the eastern boundary line of the borough, under the directions of contractor Flet • cher, is progressing very rapidly, sod will, we think, be so far advanced, in a short time, as to be out of the way of any sudden rise of the ri ver. The work here is very heavy, and is being done In a durable and substantial manner. A little farther np the road, neathe residence of Mr_ James Wells, quarrymen are engaged in getting out stone for this and other portions of the line. At Bowes' run, the masonry has also been commenced, and considerable grubbing done between that point and Esq. MeLaughlin'e. We observed, near Walker's brick yard, the com pletion of a short piece of the road—it looks railroad like, and seems to be very substantially constructed. Hudson Is also engaged with a strong force, at Arbuckle's run ; here is a very heavy piece of masonry, but as be kadrertand, busincu, we think the Company need have no fears as to the time of its completion, nor the meaner in which it will be done. That old pioneer of bridges and locks, Morris Miller, is progressing with his work at Little Beaver.
