It is well worth reading, and we hope every

I State will show, by their vote on Tuesday next,
i that the confidence in our harmony, zeal endue
' tivity, above exprbssed, is well deserved. There
is every motive presented to - atiinulate desecrate
to exertion this year. -The National Adminis

won the confidence of the entire party by its
faithful conduct of public affairs, and its bold
stand in favor:of the rights of American citizens
everywhere ; and we can express that regard
and confidence by a large and triumphant ma
jority at the ballot box at the coming election.
A majority larger than has been returned for
years before can be secured, If every democrat
will do his duty. Such a result would strengthen
the hands of the National and State Adminis
trations, confirm the triumph of our principles,
and cheer the hearts of the true friends of the
people everywhere. The democrats of 'Ale

adversity and defeat, for years. We ore sure

the victory in this county this year, and the rule
of the party of isms is at an end.
"Good omens cheer us" on every side. In
all the States where the elections have occurred
this ysar, democracy has won victories and
gained strength. Pennsylvania must not be be
hind in this gallant race. And the democrats of
Allegheny county, stimulated by the double mo
tif° of emulating the seal and faithfulness of
their brethren elsewhere, and winning an un
wonted triumph, must turn out in their full
strength, on Tuesday nest. To the work, to the
polls, Democrats one and all. Our county mutt

ion Mr. MATICY'A letter. This is somewhatetrange.
We thought the " old bellicose " would be ahead
of all its cotemporaries, and we believe that the
Journal has announced that it lathe enterprising
paper of the city. But It appears that the
"bellicose" and the "enterprising" Journal had
to unite to do a small matter of work which the
Post did by- itself without any trouble. We
would like to know when Mr. RIDDLE and Mr.
Warn kissed and made friends' We have a
distinct recollection that a short time since the
former repudiated all intercourse with the let
ter. The "double team," however, Caine out
aftet the Post.
_. The Journal considers itself "sold," by
the publication of Judge Shannon's charge to
the Jury in the case of the owners of the steam
boat Mary Ann, against the city of Pittsburgh.
We published the same charge on the same
day with the Journal, and our motive In publish
ing it is soon explained. It related to the du
ties of the city ; and the right of steamboat
owners, in regard to the wharf. We supposed
that this publication would give all parties a
(thanes to understand their rights and duties.
We considered it a matter of importance to the
public, and had no " trick " in view, as the Ga
zette considers it.

The True Position.
The same game resorted to by a few Whigs
and Free Sailers in the present campaign, in re

by the same parties in the campaign of 1849.
The Patriot at that time, under the control of
Mr. Morgan, the lies of the mongrel brawlers
to the contrary notwithstanding, took precisely
the same position on this subject that it does at
the present day. Mr. Morgan-in speaking of the
movement in '49 says :

His confinement is at present by no means

that his liberty is restrained. His room is ten
feet square, and contains a sofa, or more pro.

this she, though the real cause, if anyimist, is
known to but few.
The Houston Telegraph of the 16th tilt. has the
following paragraphs:
"We learn that much excitement has been
created on the western frontier by a report, that
the hlexicartri Were preparing to attack 'Rune of
thuirontier posts.
"The west bank of the Riot:lra:3de is literally .
lined "with troops, and irmas supposed.that mot
leas thsn fifteen thousarui Mexican tromp .ere.
now stationed in the towns east of thp Sierra

" We learn from a gentleman who has recently
returned from Brownsville, thatthe trade ofthat
piece has been nearly destroyed, owing to the
rigid revenue laws of Meileo. Business has
been almost entirely suspended for the last two
or three.months.
"The trade with the towns above Laredo has
not been suspended. The traders of •Lampasos
and other places north of Camargo still visit the
towns on this side of the river."
A correspondent of the Matagorda Penne
mils the following as a postscript to &Jotter,
dated San Antonio, Aug. 20:
I have just learned a piece of warrumor,that .
may be interesting to your readers. Instruc
tions have been received here by the quarter.
master, to make immediate preparations fertile
reception and accommodation of 10,000 United
States troops—some say 20,000. This move
ment has been induced by the warlike attitude
of Mexico. Santa Anna is rapidly recruiting hls
forces; and it is pretty Well ascertained, upon
good authority, has already a large error% pro
cess of organization. We have every reason to
believe that the demonstrations are not pacific.
Rumor is rife hero, that be makes theimmediate
'minion of Texas a matter of no concealment.
The Mexicans here believe the report.
In reference to this, however, the Tribune
makes the following plausible observations:
There remains no question of the fact that he
has already raised a large army, and prit them
in motion for his northern frontier; but that be
is preparing for an invasion of the United States
is rather too doubtful a suggestion for our credu
lity. Santa Anna is accorded too much diacern
ment by those who know him for any such erra
tic movements. Ile has intestine enemies 'to
contend with, and ho Is preparing to put their
noses to the grindstone, and carry out the op
pressive measures of his own ambitions and in
domitable will at the point of the bayonet. The
Northern States are murmuring diaaffeatlon, and
he is determined to teach them obedience. Ca
margo, Monterey, Matamoros, and other towns
adjacent to the lower Rio Grande, are bristling
with his bayonets, while higher up, near the
Presidio road, a heavy army of 30,000 men le
said to be on the march. Our own government,
being apprised of these movements, began to
prepare for an emergency. All the troops from
the available Indian outposts in the - vicinity have
been ordered to rendezvous at San Antonio im.
mediately. Several companies had arrived there
before we left. Some twenty companies from
different military stations In the Atlantic States
have also been ordered to San Antonio, and it Is
generally believed that there would be between
6.000 and 8,000 troops quartered in that city in
the edlaras of a few weeks.
The San Antonio Texan of the Bth Says:
Lieut. MeeMing's party of the United States
Boundary Commission arrived in this city a few
days ago from Eagle Pass end the Upper Rio
Grande. They report everything' quiet In that
region, with the exception of the usual amount
of stealing on both sides of the river. This be-
Mg an old thing, It creates no excitement er Un
easiness. Of Santa Anna's warlikepreparations
nothing Is known at Eagle Pass.
The Newer, ( - allay, of Corpus Christi, in its
issue of the 6th instant, says:
We mentioned in our last, the arrival.of Ifej.
Delafield. United States Engineer Corps,' at
Brownsville, with a party of sappers and miners.
We have now to announce the arrival of that dis
tinguished engineer in our city. He comes here,
no doubt, to consult General Smith, the com
manding officer of this division, upon matters
connected with the defence of the Texan fron
tier.
Gen. Smith and Major Deinlaid aro to leavo
here Bonn for the Rio Grande, to select eitea for
and locate three fortifications.
The (tame paper announces that Captain Blair,
Commissary United States Army, has Just re
turned to that city, after an official tour among
the different military poste in this division.—y.
THG KOWZTA AFIAIII AND TH EUROPEAN
cloven.vates-r—The Union, commenting on Mr.
Marey's tamer, denies the statement that France
and England had protested against the conduct
of Captain Ingraham. It says that the cabinet
of Palle has not failed to make known to that of
Vienna its disapprobation of Mid proceedings of
the Austrian functionaries in regard to lroasta at
Smyrna, even upon the Austrian statement of
those proceedings and that the view It takes bf
the transaction looks rather to the maintenance
of the rights and territorial sovereignty of Tur
key than to the Interests or pretoestons-of Aus
tria. The government of Great• Britain, though
it has made known to the United States the fact
that Its attention has been drawn to the subject
has yet given no intimation that it regards the
course of the American functionaries in the
transaction as open to censure.—Ledyer.
Scs.tror.zAt CoarEtirtoti.-11'e learn from the
Laterrnre Journal, that the Conferees of the 2lat
Senatorial District met in New Castle, on the 9th
inst., and placed in nomination as tbo Democra
tic candidate for State Senate, Dr. Rose Idc-
CLEttmin, of Lawrence county. In accordance
with the proceedings, we raise his name to our
mast head, knowing him to be a eound Democrat,
and in every way well qualified to discharge the
responsible and arduous duties of a Senator. It
Is to be hoped that the Democracy of Butler
county will give him their undivided and united
support at the approaching election. Butler

5. The power to make a will.
6. The control of her children.
We copy the above for the benefit of the
" 15,000 unmarriageable females of Syracuse."
You see the loss doubles the amount of the gain
—besides the last item—when married, the wo

govern them as you pledse.—Syracuse Standard.
ger " A married couple," says the Gazotte
des Tribunaux, " after living together on bad
terms for some time, separate. They sold off all
their furniture, but, finding that the sum it real
ized was not very important, they proposed to
commit suicide, and they went to the Canal
Saint Martin to execute the design. The hus
band leaped first, but after a while, being a cap
ital swimmer, be raised his head above water,
and perceived his wife standing 'quietly on the
bank watching him. He began abusing her, and
said that, according to their convention, she
ought to drown herself. Instead, however, of
complying, she accused him of intending to let
her drown whilst he saved himself by swimming.
He called on her to plunge in at once, without
any more talk, but she refused. Thereupon he
got out of the water, and gave hera tremendous
thrashing. Some persons who came up, went
to seek for the guard, and the loving pair were
arrested. On being questioned, they made the
facts known.
