THE NEW DODGE OF THE WHIGS The Whigs, feeling that their case in the pres• eat campaign is a most desperate one, are en deavoring to make a new issue, and seek to abandon their former political position, and as sume a now one. The bobby they now desire to mount is the Maine Liquor Law. We do not hesitate to say that the abstract principles of the Law are worthy of the applause of every good citizen, but that its Workings will meet the views of its most ardent friends, is a consumma tion too ridiculous to hope for. The Whigs have issued a call upon all the can didates for the Legislature, to the support of tho Law. All the Democratic candidates are men friendly to the cause of temperance, and we do not think it is necessary for them to answer im pertinent interrogatories. The people, who have to elect them, should be the judges of their feelings in regard to the Law, (which is entirely an outside question in the contest,) and if they are unworthy of election, let them be rejected. Both tickets wore nominated by conventions. The Maine Liquor Law was not mooted in either of them; nominations were made on political groixnds alone, bat now we are told by the Whig organs that the Law is the only question at issue. What hypocrisy' A scheming clique of Whigs to attempt to draw the people by such hollow hearted devotion to the cause of temperance.— Where were these men in the days of "Hard ci der made a little harder by a misture of strong brandy?" Hundreds of those on the list will tell you, if they speak truly, that they were at tending at the bring hole, tin cup in hand, to treat all to a full measure who would promise to vote the Whig ticket. They succeeded in 1840 through the influence of Intemperance, but ret ribution followed them, and they were not per mitted to en b the fruits of their iniquitious umph. They guzzled the hard cider during the campaign, hut found the golden apple which they thought th,7 had woo, turn to dust when they touched it. They hare now changed their policy; they adroit :hat the 11 big party is au , ‘,tbsolete idea;" they take the Maine Law saute, and if that dees u.•t cave them they are in a piti able condition. We are no enemies of the :lining) Liquor Law; we would desire to see it prerail over the whole country, but we will not consent that an tinprin cipled faction ehall use it far the purpose of carrying themselves into power. The leading advocates of the Low were the prominent retail ers-of "Bard Cider," when they found that in temperance would serve their canes, and if they thought it would advance their purposes now, they would again hare their liquor barrels et ev ery corner. We hope that no democrat w;11 bo deceived by their deceitful appeals. They are no sincere friends of at - is-Maine Law; and their bravado is merely. for the purpose of intimidating persons to vote the Whig, tirket. We a - rev - ell aware that the democrats are in favor of temperance in all things, and we hope that none of them will be deceived by the hypocritical protestations of whig office hunters who affect a virtue they do not possess. EL EC TION PROSP-F:CTS The newepapera from al! parte of our State come to CI !I laden with sheering news in regard to the proPpeete of the democratic party for the October election. The nominations in all the counties seem to give general satisfaction; and every where we see evidence that our party is on the alert, and seems determined that the party of ism, but without principles. shall gain no advantages this year; but that democracy, progressive in its character, must make a step in advance in its pewer and infillellee, by an increased majority in the old Keyatone State. We hope the democracy of Allegheny county will be equally active, equally hopeful, and equally devoted to the great principles of their party ; and we may, in a little over two weeks time, send over the State the tidings that our county, the second in the State in importance, is in part, if not entirely, redeemed. We speak candidly and seriously, when we say that the democrats have but to ,will it, and this county will become democratic. And we believe that our chance for a triumph was never as good as this year. We aro nil united upon our county ticket. VA know it is a good one. A better one has never been presented for the suffrages of the people- We can elect at least a portion of it. Demo crats, do not lose this opportunity. Give no credit to whig slanders on C.nal Commission ere, candidate for Surveyor General, and our expellent candidate for the Senate. Those slan ders can be easily refuted, and are wholly un worthy of credit. 'A disregard of that passport is an insult to ear government. But we hope the ground will be taken by our government that the declara tion_ of intention to become a citizen of this country is the ground of right to Amerlcanpro tection. That declaration is the first step towards citi zenship and renunciation of allegiance to the native government; and deprives the alien of the right to claim the pi - etc.:film of his native State.
