The letter published in the Gazette of yesterday, and the remarks of the editor in a fonner artiole,_proye and admit that fact also; the only differer.oe being that the Gazette emd its correspondent say the temperance men lett the table tefore the liquor was brefight on. We never asserted that the SqUire paid for any of the liquor. We merely asked the . question. That then is answered. But liquor was uteed, that is certain ; was need at the table. It 'was a Whig supper, and those who were disaffected on account of Jones' nomination were invited . ; and one of them attended. Some of the par Bo nier friends of the defeated candidates were also there. This we stated. It is not denied, smd cannot be. It is true, and the Gazette knows it.. We could give names, but they are our personal friends, and we know they do not wish to have their names announced in connection with the silly affair. But, if it becomes necessary, we will ont with them, and all the proofs. The truth shall be known. A Whig editor, wile slandering the Democrats, and calling them the intemperance party, shall not conceal and mis represent the 'revelries of Whigs. Our Whig friends may enjoy as many such suppers as they please, and drink what they please; but their champion of the Gazette, must not, at the same time, proclaim the Whigs the temperance party, and the Demoorats the intemperance party. The Democrats have had no such sup pers. And now, having shown that the statements of -the Gazette prove nearly all that we asserted, all the most material facts, we are satisfied to let the public judge whether the slanders of the Gazette upon the democratic party are not an- swered; and whether it was not proper to refer to this Wilkinsburg spree, to show that the Ga- zotte's assertions were not true There is oueretrattion, neighbor. Oontlemen, don't venture too many assertions about it. You have no idea how completely we are in possession of the facts. But the matter Is not worth much more at present; except to elsow who are employing " money and liquor " for political purposes. COAL TRA DE. —We learn that there are about two hundred and twenty pairs of coal boats al ready loaded and ready to start down the river, upon the first sufficient rise of the river. The run will be larger than usual this fall, in Conse quence of not having a rise, as is usual, during the summer. Taking this as about the true number of boats, and supposing each pair to contain on an average, about 18,000 bushels, it will make 3,960,000 bushels of coal ready for the Southwestern market. If this should sell for eight cents per bushel, it would bring into our neighborhood in cash, or its equivalent, mostly cash, however, the snug little sum of three hundred and sixteen thousand dollars' brought from other States into Pennsylvania, and into the viciaily of our city. Two or three each runs occur annually, and bring back their golden returns. The coal trade in the eastern part of the State supplies the eastern markets principally; and amounts to several millions of dollars an nually. This is one source of the wealth of Pennsylvania. It is a source, too, that is in exbaustable ; and the trade and tho demand is every year increasing, as population, manufac tures, and steam navigation increase. The coal fields of Pennsylvania alone, will in time render it one of the wealthiest States of the Union. Yet lees than fifty years ngo the project Of making coal the principal fuel in the city of Philadelphia, was deemed chimerical, and laugh ed at. Every new railroad opened moor State, opens vast fields of coal, and renders them fortunes to their owners at once ; while without the rail roads, and improvements in navigation, they were of little value. There is no State of the Union where a free trade policy In regard to railroads would operate so beneficially as in our own. Let New York and Ohio make roads across oar territory wherever they please. They will open, and render valuable, new mines in every county. Tan Talcum or DEMOCAACY.—The cause of Democracy has received an impulse within the last twelve months, that seems likely to sweep down all opposition in all the States of the Union ere long. In another COI GAM of this paper, it will be seen that, notwithstanding all the ef forts to defeat the Democrats, in the State of Maine, by running numerous candidates, oar party has secured both broaches (Atha Legista tare, the Governor, and the whole State admin istration. Even in Vermont, thoroughly Whig, time out of mind, the Whig party has this year barely cowed defeat. And suoh has been the result of the electione in nearly all the States thus far, in all we may truly say. Verily there must be a living power in democratic principles that no opposition can daunt, no adverse influences des troy. No wonder the New York Tribune and Courier refuse longer to do battle against the all mastering spirit. We verily believe that a combined, vigorous and well directed effort would redeem oqr old County of Allegheny, and give us at least a part of the officers this tall. That such an effort will be made is our belief. It would be a shame to let slip this golden opportunity. The Manchester Guardian exposes a case of swindling, wherein a Dr. Miles Il Ellis, Easton, Northampton county. The Englieb relatives of Mr. Chadwick sent supplies to the address indicated, and, on writing to the postmaster, learned that -Dr. Ellie" was unknown in that section, but - that Mr Chadwick had been a well known, and well-to-do citizen, who had died sometime previously. Perhaps the affair may already have been noticed by the Pennsylvania press. Dr. Miles 11. HORRIBLE BRUTALITY AT BUENOS AYREA,—A letter from Buenos Ayres, in the New York Times, relates some instancee of horrid cruelty perpetrated by General Unwise previous to his flight. One instance was that of Donna Martina Panda, wife of p. !olivine Romer, who wrote a letter to an officer named (lapse% advising him to leave the ranks of Requite and Join thew. or the legal Government Capaco, who had been fed and clothed by the lady, when he was In reat poverty, pretended to favor ber wishes, b u t at the fret opportunity betrayed her to [Jr quite, who ordered her instant arrest, and sen tenced her to receive 300 lashes, and proceeded, in person, accompanied by Lagos, his colleague, to see the sentence executed. The victim was led out, stripped entirely of her clothing, and platted in the luidst of the squadron of soldiers assigned to inflict the punishment. The cries and agony of the wretched woman, at an expo sure so much more horrible to her than death Itself, had no effect upon her heartless execu tioners.tcwhe had ts Beforetsritithedesftrziom pain and peswereen i e- w Lour bloo hin d: in flicted and shortly after ho was apprised that the suf ferings of the poor wretch were terminated. She was dead. With an excess of inhumanity which Is almost incredible, the monster ordered the re maining number of stripes to be inflicted upon the corpse, and finally left the spot, forbidding the removal of the remains. They consist of apple, fresh and dried, peach ditto ditto, plum ditto ditto, pear, and the ineradicable "genooine punkin." The latter comes all the way from Connecticut, every morning, and radiates all over Gotham from a Pie Depot in Nassau street. The others are home-made ; all are well filled, well baked, and most excellent. So, go in to the grocer's! cast your eye up along the shelves of the orna mental case when these epitomes of pleasure nestle together, fix upon your victim, drag him out, and drowning him in a goodly bowl of iced milk, make one of the lanai "teas" that can be scared up on this terrestrial ball. There's variety to choose from and small expense. See me in there pre. cleely so situated, with half a dozen pie and milk men iu the rear fully engaged, and the gro cer in front of me grinning over the counter, and you have n scene which frequently occurs. It belongs to the age and the abundance of deli clone fruit. Glee us sage cultivators, country homes, orchards and pastures, and fist-sized clingstone and rich Orange County cream will not fail all the year round. Tho same rule will apply elsewhere. So mote it be ! Exotic fruits are casein great plenty. Wagon loads of pine apples are often Been on their way from the wharves, and the largest size of the fruit can he bought for a dime—l frequently purchase for 5 Dents what would cost 25 at home. At the stands, they are sold in large slices for a cent, and were great favorites with the thirsty throng during the hot weather. Oranges and lemons in heaps decorate the elegant marble mineral water and sherbet stations that now em bellish the corners of many of the most import ant streets. Of these stations, those at the cor ner of Broadway and Broome and Chatham and Beekman, near the Park, aro the handsomest and most frequented. There you can get all kinds of temperance beverages for throe cents, and fill your newspaper with peaches at the close adjacent stalls. But, of all other places after the markets, the junction of Canal street., with Broadway on both sides, but more particularly towards the Hod son, is the grandest for the productions of gar den, grove and orchard. Flowers In clumps, piles of melons, great dangling clusters of white and purple grapes, festoons of bantam and pines, Bicker baskets of mingled fruits, choicely picked and exquisitely arranged to be sold to gether, and chartniug bouquets wrought in among them, are elegantly peeked in light fantastically designed holders and baskets of colored wire, line the pavement for the breadth of several houses, whose lower doors and windows, dung open and at night brilliantly illuminated, reveal additional stores of loveliness within, often in more senses than one, for few of the fair can pass that scene without a lingering look. But oh ! r Saturday evening theta; you cannot even ima gine it, and I shall try to describe in my next the motley end laughable s,oectecle, equalled only on the Cbiajs Santa Duch of Naples. This life of the people is greatly neglected by visitors to Manhattan. and yet it offers s con stant eumessicn otnovelty end anjeyment. Among the rest were Thomas Mooney and Pat rick Hart, both Leinster men, who left the ehari tee of Mr. McMahon for the purpose of killing some person belonging to an opposing faction. Previous to leaving the shantee, Hart deelared that he had killed ten men in his life time, and that he would kill another before night. A wit. ness testified to seeing them take a bye path that led to Wynne & Anthony's section on the New Portage Road, and that Mooney had push ed Hart over a log—that both picked up stones, but moved on in oompany. Mrs. ?decoy testified that shortly after dinner she went down the path and met Hart, who tried to conceal his fate from her by covering it with a straw hat. A few steps further on she discovered the dead body of Mooney. She raised an alarm immediately, and Hart fled, but he was overtaken and arrested by Mr. bicNiation and Mr. Anthony, and was brought to this place and lodged in jail by the police of ficers. A post mortem examination proved that the murdered man came to his death by stabs from a knife or some other sharp instrument—a blow from which penetrated to the spinal mar row in the neck. A coroner's inquest was held on Thursday. Some eight or ten witnesses were examined, and every fact brought to light tend ed so strongly fo fix the guilt of the murder on Hart, that the jury were unanimous in bringing in a 'verdict to that effect —Hollidaysburg Stand ard. gm.
