It is-said, with much confidence, that the new silver coin, now in the prcieCia of "manufZetnre will soon supply the retail trade and other branches of busines s _ With an abundance of sil ver-change. This is good news for our , retail deafen. - For many months past they havelmen paying as high as five per cent. for change. This now coinage, however, we hope, will relieve them from :hie onerous tax. The immense increase of ephemeral Banks throughout the country, has, in a great measure,' increased the difficulty of getting change. Our city is now flooded with the notes of Imaginary .z, - taitius . some seventeen hundred miles from us, luid they are paid out by some brokers with the atistrance that they are as " good as wheat." The free banking notes of Bock Island and Chi cago (s1IL) have_ mtlie their appearance in our . market, end some persons have committed the folly of taking them for money. Weare weli ea solid those acquainted in financial matter', that this kind of paper money is fiangerons, and stilled be avoided. We have experienced it In .strtall.Wiyeurselves, aria, had , to- _return ,the wostiTese tiash tsititose who were first deceived in receiving it. The fact of sending it snch..a distance from home for thee - purpose of cirtulation, indicates an intention 'of. fraud, and ikould be convincing proof to the . mind" of every man of common sense, that he should not handle the worthless rags. If - the managers 'of the rag-money mills from which they are issued, thought they were of any value at - home, they would not hire bank ers in- Pittsburgh to force their worthless trash upon our community. In saying this, we do not speak unadvisedly. We have seen some of the notes of these swindling concerns issued from, one'ef our basking houses as fresh and clean as when they'd:inn from the press of - the engraver.' . Misr why should these rags be sent round for oily:dation among oar titisens, if the managers &a not contemplate - a fraud in the transaction ? They are conscious that their rags have no credit at kettle; no map will receive them, unless at a hoary discount, and therefore the managers have instructed their =skier to empty his hat, the cardinal and only depositary of the capital of these swindling institutions, and rend their pretty pictures to .a far distant place for general circulation, wider the pleasant hope that the bank Will break up before the ?Up return for ictiemition.. - We are astouished that any of our bankers would consent to give character to this kind Of:sae:ley. For instance, the Rook River Blitk - thr? _paper o? which is now issued byone bowie In our city, bears the palpable evidence of intetUded fitted on the face .of every note. The notes 'Would appear, to a casual observer, to represent that the bank had a capital stork of $500,006,-ehile in fact it has only an apocry phal capital of $50,000. - This: ,Itl a fair illustra tion of the manner in which theadriew banks are to be conducted, and - the , chisanery, by which, their knavish managers exPeet to make ineney, eff the credulous -people: We would -:caution our oltisetis to beware of ail this :Westera" ileOSey. Viten they receive paper money, we vroulked-_ vlse:them to take nothing but the paper money of outlocal banks. It is easy for them to asoer thin its worth or worthlesemess at any of nur banking houses. About twenty years ego, when a certain West ern Stale (which we shall not name) was a terri. tory, and with very few inhabitant; a young lawyer from one of the old States emigrateti thither. and settled in the town of K—. He succeeded admirably in his profession, and rose rapidly in popular favor. He had been there nearly two years, when be had induced a printer to come and print a weekly paper, of which he was the editor and proprietor. Squire S— wag much pleased for a while with editing a pa per. He was a OWIII of very low stature, but he used the editorial "we" ati frequently nal! there was a dozen of them; and each as big as Daniel Lambert or-the IrentuckY giaut. Strange to say. there were men at that time in offiec_who were not a particle more honest than they should be—a thing which probably never happened be fore, and rums will again Squire 8— felt all the patriotism of a son of 16, lied poured out grape and canister against the public abuses. This stirred up a boraces pest about his ears; but as there was no othei paper in the territory, there was no ieply, and he enjoyed his warlike propensities in security. At length he published an article more. severe and cutting spinet malfeasance in office than any that had preceded it. In fact, though pointed at no one individual in parties- ' jar, it was a scorches. Sumo three-or fear days after, be was sitting in his editorial office, which was about a quarter of a mile from the raid printing establishtneut lila pea was busy with a paragraph, when the door opened withent rauch , erremany, and in stalked a man about six feet to his stockings. He asked—" Are you the proprietor of this paper r .Thinking he had found a new patron, - the little man. with one of his blandest =flea, answered• in the at. ermative. The stranger deliberately draw"the last number from his pocket, and pointing to an article against rogues In office, told the affright ed.editer it was intended 'tor him. It was in vain that fi— protested that he had never . heard of him before. The wrath of the visitor rose to fever heat, and from being so long re "trained. boiled over with double fury, He gave the choice, either to publish a very bumble re. cantatlon, or take a dogging on the spot. , -•-- He agreed to retract, and as the vialtor insist ed on writing it himself, be sat down to his desk. fiqulre 8— made an excuse to go to the print log office, with a promise that he would be back in season to sign it as soon as It was bolsi:lel S—had hardly gone fifty yards when he en countered a man who inquired where Squire office we. and If he was of home. Sus pecting that he was on the same errand as the other gratin., he pointed to the rate, and told him that be would find the editor within writing accost abusive article against offitti•holders.— Thls was enough. The eyes of the termer flash-, ed fire. He rushed into the cal* and assailed the stranger with the epithets "liar," " scone drel." "coward," and told him rte would teach him how to write. The gentleman supposing it was some bully sent there by the editor, sprang to his feet. and a fight ensued. ThO table was upset and smashed into kindliugnoed—the con tents of a large jug of tisk stood piddled on the floor—the chairs had theirlegs and hacks broken beyond the skill of surgery to cave them. This seemed to inspire the combatants with still great er fury, blow followipg blow with the rapidity of lightning. First ono was kicked on the floor, then the other, each taking It in turns pretty equally. The ink on the floor bad found its way to their faces, till both at them cut the most ridiculous figures imaginable. The noise and uproar was tremendous. The neighbors ran to the door, and exclaimed that two negroes were fighting in Squire B—'a office. None dared to separate them. At length the circumstances bectunelmown, and the next day, hardly obis to sit on horseback, their heads bound up, they started homewards, convinced that they had ob tained very littlepatlsfaction from their attempt to flog en editor. Mon and likings In &sutralta. At tome of the diggings, the government regulations with regard to license fees have given rise to serious opposition. The fee at present imposed is thirty shillinge.eterling per month, to be paid in advance, and of the begin ning of each month. This fee is charged upon plot or "claim" of eight feet square, which is the most allowed to any one digger. 'Where there le a party of four found, the " claim" al lowed id e4ght feet by sixteen. A license grant ed in the thiddie of any one month—say the 20th of December--ontriolcis good - to the beginning of the ensuing month —.say the first, or at farthest, the 6th of January. The number of licenses granted in the month of November last' was 06,000, and it Is computed that there are at present close upon 200,000 persons employed at the diggings. Mechanics, particularly carpen ters and blacksmiths, obtain employment readily at wages varying from eighteen shillings to one pound per deg. Laborers upon the government works , are- receiving some . eight ehillinge'and more ten shillings per_.day. For clerks, &0., there is no demand. tTo parties who intend coming to this colony; I would say "he pre pared to rough it, and toempect nothing, either on the part of the authorities or on that of the inhabitants, but selfishness and distrust. Bring, as little with you in the shape of clothing, 50., , as you possibly can; and trust for motes to your own stern exertions, and for protection to your revolvers." Colt's revolvers were selling here some time ago et twenty and twenty-five pounds each; they bring at present twelve pounds. The accommodation for immigrants is misertiblein the extreme. There are now living in tents outside the- city upwards of 6,000 per son.; and for the privilege of pitching their own tents on a vacant lot, of no immediate use to government, these.persone are obliged to ply 6 rent of five shillings a week. Persons who have not got any tent, and who are 'unable to pay the exhorbitant charges at the hotels, may put up at one of the government lodging-houses,- where, for the charge of five shillings a week, they may obtain sleeping accommodation , in .a shed containing from six to a dosen beds in each room.—Lefler from He/bourne, lan.' 8, to the brute. ger Low Spirit*, Hypochondriac; want of energy and capacity for business or dispordtion to enjoy life and happiness, aro wretched complaints which silently prey upon the constitution of the unhappy object.
