Patriot, ono of our best country exchanges, says:—Otir country is now blessed with a good old fashioned Democratic Administration of the old Iscx.soN stamp. The Democratic majority in Congress is fully two to ones Nearly every State in the Union has a Democratic Governor. The country is more com pletely under Democratic rule than ever it was before. Every article of agricultural production brings good prices, and wherever a market can be bad at all, cash in hand. When Democracy rises, the country rises with it. Four years of Galphin rule have not been sufficient to seriously retard our prosperity, -end one year of honest Democratic sway will replen ish the national treasury and ,retrieve our na tional honor from the slights it hae received un der Whig rule. No Governor General of Cuba will dare to insult our ilag while Faro:tan PrEaen is President, and the muscat go unredreseed.: For eigners know "who is who" in this country just as well as we do. Our prosperity, agricultural and commercial, is a subject of congratulation. The administration has the confidence of our own people, and it commands respect abroad. If our Whig friends desire to claim any credit because this state of things exist at the close of Mr. Fuxstosa's administration, we absolve them from all desire to injure the country by govern mental measures. They save done nothing to increase or retard its prosperity, exzept by enormous peculation of public fpnds and a fee ble administration of affairs, whilst the country was left to take care of itself. COMPLAINTS AGAINST PITTSBURGH We received the following letter on Saturday, from a Pittstairgher, who is now in Clevegni, and lay it before our readers, in order that the evils complained of may be remedied, if possi ble: langstit.'Enfrois - t.=3 pm berg . l att tranaient visit to this eity,'lrintrasittsbnrgher I am a lover to every word Said about - our city and its improvements. The merchants here and those I found cn from the other towns in the State of Ohio, complain loudly of the transit of goods through our city on their way Eastward. Articles requiring care suffer more, they allege, 'from drayage at Pittsburgh than any other point on the Pennsylvania or any other route. If this is an unjustfeharg.p. it should be refuted, and If cause issiven for it, means should be adopted to inquire into it, in order to its cure. The article of Cloverseed, one , remarks. cannot safely be sent through Pittsburgh without damage and loss from rough.nsage to handling beyond what any reasonable profit will justify. Wool, another says, is cut by the dray wheels for want of that conveyance being boxed as it is elsewhere to protect it. Cheese; says another, is injured much by being put on drays without springs. The cost, too, for drayage is often as much if riot more than the freight from interior towns to Pittsburgh. These and similar complaints, if just, and no remedy is adopted to remove them. must ere long drive freighvon rival routes to the Atlantic markets. These matters, Messrs. Edi tors, require prompt attention from those en gaged in mercantile pursuits, so that the evils and others'connected may be remedied • . PIIQUESNE. A rumor has been recently circulated by a portion of the public press, to the effect that this interesting expedition either has been, or is about to be, countermanded by the present Sec retary of the Navy. We learn from the Wash ington Union, of Tuesday, that all such rumors are entirely unfounded in faet. On the contrary, the administration is making every effort to give all proper aid in carrying out the important ob jects of the expedition, and in fulfilling the pub lic expectation in regard to It. It is feared, however, the Union says, that the ship of the line Vermont, and the steam frigate Allegheny, cannot be got ready in time to join the expedi• tion, which is now rendezvousing in China. The reason assigned , is the great difficulty experien ced in enlisting' seamen. This, however, will not interfere with the contemplated visit of Commodore Perry to Japan, with a force amply sufficient and well provided for the successful accomplishment of the objects of his mission. The editor of the Cleveland Plaindeaiar, who is now Postmaster of that pretty city of the lakes, tins doubtless' been , directing an eye to the pay. The prospects of advantage and profit to the western former are especially flat tering. While the population of the States is rapidly increasing, the supply of wool is dimin ishing. In New York' t'.- reduction is from 6,000,000 to 3,000,000 ; in Vermont, from 1,000,- 000 to 300,000. While the increase of popula tion in the United States has been 20,000,000, the number of sheep has been 1,01)0,000. We are principally dependent on a foreign supply, and that is diminishidg. In seventeen of the largest nations of Europe the sheep number only '207,171,351, while the total sum of the population of these countries is over 325,000,- 000. Auetralia used to be a capital wool pro ducing country, sending out from 16,000,000 to 40,000,000 lbs. annually. Bat the gold mania has put a startling check upon all that, and caused a great diminution in those exports. In a word, deficiency of sheep and wool is milder stood to appear throughout nearly all the great wool growing sections cf the globe. Bet notwith standing this favorable aspect of the wool trade, we are informed by shrewd business men that the high prices at which contracts have been al retarthaile-,-Will prove ruinous to the purchasers: ITEMS OF MEXICAN NEWS The agents of Mr. Sloo have paid into the treasury the sum of Vio,ooo, being the monthly payment of March under the contract. Messrs. Mora and Gonzalez, commissioners on. the part of the government to make. delivery of the line tb the mixed company, have left Vera Cruz for Minatitian. Much feeling was zoned in Mexico against Falconnet, the bankkr, in consequence of the publication by the London papers of a letter from him to the Mexican bondholders, stating that in obtaining the exportation free of duty of the $2,500,000 last paid, it bad oost $60,000 in bribes to the members of Congress. In Jalisco and Durango the Indians are still committing frightful outrages. In one or two villages these savages have been bravely met and repulsed, and, as a general rule, they are suffer d unresistibly to commit the most horrible atro cities. At Zacatecas a large force of Indians were routed by a hand of soldiers under Col. Echeverria. t er Life Insurance Companies in England have recently undergone investigation by a Par liamentary committee, in consequence of alleged abuses, and petitions that the companies might be placed on a more satisfactory footing.' Seve ral oases of gross frauds were discovered, such as the exhibition of deceptive balance sheets, the establishment of companies without any real capital, &c. It appeared that since 1844 nearly 400 Life Insurance Companies had been project ed, of which only about 60 are now in existence. Tho accumulated capital of the present compa nies in Great Britainis said to be about $750,- 000,000, and the annual income $25,000,000.= In Scotland alone the liabilities of fifteen com panies have risen to $160,000,000, and their an nual Mourne exceeds $7,500,000. The portraits of her Ma jesty, himself, Prince Arthur, and of the late Duke of Wellington, forming the picture painted by Winterhalter, is his contribution. The Baron Marochetti has completed a colossal equestrian statue of General Washington, which is about to be embarked for the exhibition. Mr. Carew has executed a colossal statue of the late Daniel Webster, for the same place. It represents the American Statesman in the act of addressing the Senate. The State of Missouri has appro priated $4,000 for its proper representation at the opening of the exhibition, and Congress on the 28th of February last voted $20,000 to de fray the expenses of the Turkish steam frigate during her visit to the New York World's Fuji.
