I do not see that any good to be accomplished by this course; and-therefore say nothing in re lation to .'the various speculations. that I have beard;'but of this I am very mire, that a more honest and faithful num than- we now have at the head of, affairs in our State, cannot, i think, be found in oar country ; nor can one be found More able to carry forward the great ends to be accomplished in our State. lie has stood by us in the midst of our severest trials, and met and bowled the lion et Whiggery, when lathe height of his power,—at a thlte, loo, when sterling pit triotism alone couldt save our country and our State,--and I think that no minor consideration should be sufficient to make any true Democrat Ana.fault with him, The fact is, our Siete was never in a happier or more prosperous condition; and it.devolves upon the Democratic party to keep up the• tide of prosperity. The telegraph keeps you informed of the Gar l 'diner trialchere, which 'drags its slow length Wont" and promising, to end in nothing, or mext to nothing, : Gardiner and leading iVhig office holders have lined their pockcht pretty . well out of the, Public irerelir and 'keep the Money.: Without to intimate :that say man connected with the present admin istration could be guilty.of such ylOOllll6 plun der ashes been accomplished under thelatoVilig administration, I would express the hope, at least, that no such individual may be found.in our ranks : for, if there be such a character, he has it in his power, by doing as the Whigs did, not only to secure to himself everlasting infamy, but to prostrate his political associates, more certainly than any political act of theirs could prostrate there. It is to be hoped that there will now be a more rigid surveillance over the Treasury than there has ever been ; because the people have been awakened to the abuses and enormities of • that department, daring the last four years; and the members of the Democratic party will be held, and justly too, to amore rigid acoountabilitythan any servants of the, people have ever been held before. Tho indications, thus far, are ail of the highest promise. Indeed, I do 'not think that any administration ever com menced with as high a share of the public coif'. dance, and the prayer of every patriot must sure ly be, that it may close in glory : for that which reflects dishonor upon the head of our Republic, goes far also to bring into disrepute republican institutions ; and consequently to strengthen the hands of tyrants, and bind more tightly the op pressed and suffering nations of the earth. The Senate is getting forward with the ap pointments as fast us could be expected; and we may therefore look for a complete organiza tion of the Government within the next few weeks. It is reported that my old friend, Robert Dale Owen, of Indiana, will undoubtedly receive the appointment of Charge d'Affairs to Naples, and that Col. Gorman, who has been spoken of, here tofore, in connection with the General Land Of. floe, will receive an important appointment in South America-; it being regarded as proper to make no change - is the General Land Office for two or three months to come. The miners at this tunnel holed tlirmigh . on January 81st. Tho length of the tunnel is 8670 feet. The heading at the west end was com menced on October 14th, 1851 ; at the western shaft, November 16th, 1851 ; at the middle shaft, November let, 1851 ; and at the east end, No vember 14th, 1851. The headings at the shafts, on account of the quantity of water at first en countered, were worked only a part of the time. The engine at the middle shaft was insufficient, and was replaced by a powerful pumping-en gine, in the spring of 1852; taking these delays into account, the workings would not be equal to more than at three different points. The time, from the commencement of the work at the West end until daylight was through, is 15,1 months, Much the shortest time ever occupied in doing the same amount of work , in this country. Ring , wood Tunnel, on the Baltimore and Ohio Rail road, 4120 feet long, was commenced In Septem ber, 1849, and was, holed through on January 22d, 1862, 2 years and 4} months after the cotn mencement. This tunnel was worked at three shafts and the ends. It is'sso feet longer than the Allegheny Mountain Tunnel, but the cocain lion was remarkably " easy, half the length being through fine clay, and thetunnel very dry, which advantage would be more than an equivalent for the additional length. Great•credit is due Thomas Seabrook, Esq., P. A. Engineer, and the contractors of the Alle- gheny Tunnel, Messrs. John Rutter & Son, for their, persevering exertions in the vigorous pros icution of this work. The early, difficulty was water, which . poured into the-tunnel almost every seam, which was cat at the shafts, requiring al most an equal amount of power to dispose of it, that was calculated for removing the material. After provision vas made for disposing of the water and driving headings a short distance, the roof proved, bad, requiring timbering; hemp) , falle frequently; occurred, and delayed the work. We fear that this raters the result of competition, or else over estimated demand. That mineral will fluctuate the coming season between $lO and $4O, we, have no doubt; but that its steady value based'upon thb eastern and Bt. Louis price of d ecd, will be $40,• we doubt very much. Be that as it may, miners may rely up on a very high 'compensation for their labors henceforth." We fully agreein the above opin ion. The priceour staple, for some time to come, must mainly depend on the prices itigted by the owners of Spanish and English lead, for it is plain that our own mines cannot supply the market. If foreign dialers choose to keep the prioe'to near its present limit, we think they can do so; but this cannot be a safe reliance in the transaction of a heavy business.—Golena Advocate, 15th.
