Drisaving' his lips into a pucker, like the closed mouth of an old-fashioned work-bag, he seized theold lady by the bonnet and forced her back into her seat —thrust his face forward in front of hers, and taking aim at the window, lot tly. The whole charge struck the mischievously transparent pane, and I thought from the slop that be wiped up with a nice white handkerchief; and from the appearance of the same when he returned it to his pocket, that his mouth was calculated to hold just three gills. Re . publican gape:— We spoke some time ago of the fort unntepur chase of iron for the Cincinnati, Wilmington and - Zanesville Railroad, by Mr. Corwin, the Presi dent, by which neer two hundred thousand dol lars were saved to the Company. Shortly after this heavy . transaction, Mr. COr win effected a contract with an iron establish ment in Boston, for two hundred tons of spikes, being the requisite amount to put down the lion that be had bought. For these he contracted to pay, delivered at Cincinnati, three and a half cents - per pound, one half in cash and the other half in bonds of the Company at par. Owing to the great rise in iron since that time, together with the increased demand for the arti cle, they hove Increased in price until they are now selling at five cents per pound, and a recent letter from the cont, recters to Mr. Corwin, noti fying him of the shipment of a portion Of' the spikes, states that they cannot supply the de mand at that price. So that, if it were necessa ry now to make a contract for the same amount of spikes for the road, they could not be procu red, delivered at Cincinnati, for less than 6 cents per pound, in cash. By.this fortunate transootion, an additional ten thousand dollars has been saved to the Com pany, that being the difference in the, cost on that amount of spikes, at 3i and 6 cents per pound: The Riche.; of New Mexico.
