The conduct of the prititmers, the Reverend instructor states, has been very, good during the year—he laments the great increase of crimes, and names two most fruitful sources of the increase. Want of moral and religions training'in youth— more than three-fourths of the prisoners confined stated that.their early youth was passed with out moral teachings; the second cause, "and certainly the most fnutful sonrce'ef crime in the oismteunity is," the Doctor says "drunkenness.— Of the ninety•six received within-the last twelve months, there are only seven who represent them selves as strictly temperate. There are some ten more who say they drank intoxicating liquors in moderation, which, after all, in their case at least, is but another name for intemperance. FRAUDS ON THE GOVEAAMENT.—Tho fronds up on the government in pension claims must be very numerous, for we see it stated In an Illinois paper, that Mr. Macon, an agent of the pension office, has recently been investigating certain pension cases, where the bounty of Government was suspected of having been attained through fraudulent representations, and that out of nine ty pensioners examined by him, some aixty-eight were found not to be entitled to the benefits of the law.' The stoppage of those pensions un justly obtained, will be a saving to the Govern ment of near one hundred thousand dollars in the aggregate.
