A thousand times the political croakers of the Whig party have proclaimed that the Tariff of 1846 was ruining the country, and especially the iron interests thereof. The Pennsylvanian of Tupday has en admi rable tweet) in relation to the visits paid by pol iticians and others to the President elect. The article concludes in these words: "It is remar kable, however, and we mentionit with pleasure, thateery gentleman who has visited Concord, has returned 'with expresslons of the warmest admiration and respect for the bearing and ad dressof the Presidentelect. By hi/kindness, cour way, and engaging manner, he has seemed to ripen into actual attachment a feeling, which with very many was merely an impression. Yet through all this, the wisdom of the ststeaman is clearly manifested, in the small amount of infor mation which the visitor, after his return, Clads himself possessed of. These events indicate to us the cool Judgment and perfect sagacity of the man. On Monday, the 8d inst., as we lean from the GraLsa, the stockholders of the Steubenville and Indians Railroad Company resolved s, Increase the number of the Directors of that Company to thirteen. The election was then held and re sulted In the choice of the following directors: James Means, James Parks, James Turnbull, James Collies, Daniel L Coollier, William hrDcn ald, John Andrews Charles C. The above contains all of the old board.— Messrs. Andrews, Beatty, Kilgore, Dewey, Amen and Neel, are the new members. A very Large vote was given, maniffsting the interest taken in the matter. NIAGARA FALLS AND Less 91111- man, the eminent geologist, discredits the opin ion advanced by. some, that the gradual wearing away of the rooks of Niagara Palls, may possi bly resalt in draining Lake Brie. In a recent lecture be remarked : They will not halt at their present station, but retreat slowly and surely about two miles further, whore they will stop again for an unknown period, and probably for ever, since at this place the bard limestone will form both base and top of the Falls, sod thus stop the rapid destruction of the rook. Some have thought that they would fi nally reach Lake Erie, and that then the Lake would be complete ly drained. Such ,an event is impossible. At the point already mentioned, the torrent will gradaally wear away the stem+ of the lime stone, forming a rapid, and thenceforth Niagara will be one of the lost wonders at the world. MODERN EXTRAVAOANCES.—The Now York Ex press says: The extravagance of the people of thecity ex ceeds anything in our history. Costly houses of $7OOO and $lOO,OOOO, with furniture, mirrors, carpeting, pictures, frescoes, &a, to match, are not uncommon—but there are dinners, soirees, fetei, dresses, eto., to match. We hear of balls the past week, in which dia monds and emeralds were worn worth $BO,OOO on the-person. Thousand dollars dresses are not uncommon. Dinner parties are spoken of, when ladies appear In clocks embroidered with pearls, &c. What are we coming to? The fever is indeed high, and it may be feared that before long there will be a reaction. It is right and proper for those who have enough and to spare, or who are rolling in wealth as the phrase is, to spend their money freely. Mechan ics, workingmen, mantas makers, store-keepers, and the industrial classes generally are benefited by such a policy. But there is reason in all things. The Annual Mortality In New York. M. of the last of December.— Broadway is crowded. A think fog envelbpes the city. Ladies who, after 'sunset, are rarely seen on ordinary ocoaeioas, are now everywhere to be seen. The majority of the stores are yet open. The song and the blasphemy of the Bac chinal is everywhere to be heard. There, on a door-step sits &little girl, whose coarse features betray her east-end origin; she Is blue and trembling with cold. Richly-attired females pais by their young sister without aiding her. Dan dies ".dressed to fits," whose talk is of brandy and cigars, sad of those whom they love, and by whom they are beloved—for even they have ad mirers u indeed irrational peacocks have—kni t/de the example of the Levite and the Priest.— Sixpence is all that is required by the poor child to secure her a lodging for New Year's night. Shall we give it to her, or go by on the other aide, or give her one cent and cause her to shiver on for a couple of hours longer ! "Al as! for the rarity of Christian charity under the • sun." Let us go over to the Bowery. This is the promenade of the People as Broadway is the promenade of the respectable and tho Upperten dom. The working girls have received their scanty weekly wages, end are oqt a-shopplog or admiring shops whose contents they covet but are unable to purchase. 'Tin new put eleven. Thin huge building is the "Old 'Bowery" Theatre. But it is empty now; the hundreds who, on hour ego, admired and applauded. and laughed or danced and sang snd acted here, have dispersed to their quiet or unquiet homes. Could we but follow themt— What a strange epilogue could we write! What tales of mirth and of grief, of gluttony and of hunger, of squalid poverty and of prodigal wealth, of love-sick lads and of impenitent jilts, of . men sorrowing for their sins and of women indignantly denying that they are sinners—could we unfold! But of We cannot, let us pass on ward to the Park.' ' 15 minutes are all that remain of 1852. Bow have I spent or misspent this year—before you have fairly answered this question, the clock strikes Twelve; and the firing of musketry and cheering and the aound of trumpets in the streets announce the birth of another year. Por a cou ple of hours I wandered to and fro—looking through the thick mist at drunkards and et bon fires and at groups of that class of the human family who designate themselves sotto ; " mem ber° of which I beard frequeutly alleging their affinity to the vegetable kingdom la these solemn words—to wit : " Pm punkin—hlo-1 tell ye— tdo—Wall, I bees." The best writers In the city and several eminent British authors are engaged as contributors t o it. Eta cost Is rather high--$b per annum ; but its value, if we may judge by this specimen, is much above its coat. Whoever is familiar with the literature of our city weeklies,—with the polluting articles, especially which the Sunday press sends forth corrupting, and to corrupt, will hail with pleasure the advent of this beautiful, moral and entertaining literary journal. Its contents are all original. and its Editor hes re solved to respect the Eighth Commandment.— Success to him I I P. M. The rain is still falling. Well; let us go to the Theatres. The $$ higher class " ones base no afternoon performances. Franklin's Museum and White's are not worth seeing, aid Barnum's is—like himself The National Thea tre has a "strong" bill—at least the bill says so ; but then my third sense Is unimpaired, and I have not yet forgotten how very thankful I once was on coming out of it, when I . breathed the fresh sir of Chatham street. (The air was only fresh, after all, by comparison.) The Bow ery Theatre Is the largest place of amusement in the city, and of the resorts of the People it is incomparably the best. Let us enter. The curtain has risen • and the Drama of " the De mon of the Woo ds" begins. In this piece— which has been often repeated, and which-was very carelessly played by almost every one of the company this afternoon. Messrs. Johnson & Griffiths and Misses Heron, Dawes & Hiffert appeared. Eddy Is accounted the Star of the Bowery. Hem not so , good an aoter is Johnson, nor so good a declaimer as Heron; `but then be never declaims unnaturally which johnsen often does, and has far greater powers of expression than the lady. Griffiths is as good as a come diem as Eddy is geodes a tragedian, aid. Is, as bad as a tragedian as Eddy Is .bad as a Ceme dian. Whenever he assumes a character which forbids the creation of laughter, he ; and Eddy's only power over the Bpi is to cause them to curl into a sneer—his "Irish - Lion" excepted which is a splendid "hit" in the comic target Miss Hlffert Is a very fine songstress, but , can act well only one charaoter—the jilt. She has a rival who equals her in that character—Miss Dawes—who is the best danittes in the city; some say, in the Union.' As an actress theTlat ter either makes a great "hit" or does not act at all•—merely recites and goes through her pe tition gracefully. With the Boweryites she is " tremendous" favorite ; at Boston, also, and at Providence—to use the words of a Bostonian who lately "say, stranger "-ed na in order to know It she was a s l lioness" here—" she made quite a furor." Mr. Dunn sings very well and acts very.unwell. Mrs. Grattan and Mrs. We mans are entitled-to - praise fir always doing what the others sometimes do not do—they act in their best style, and neither , actresses nor an gels can do more. The rest are unworthy of particular notice. Hamblin, the manager, far excelgevery one of his comparty as an actoe.— The Bowery Theatre is wall worth attending. In it the people can be studied with advantage. But it wants a stern critic, as the "pitmen" are so easily pleased that the performers often get careless. An incident occurred at this Theatre this afternoon, which strikingly demonstrated the necessity of our system of Representative De mocracy—a monarchist would say "thefickleness of the herd." After the first play three songs were sung in succession. Miss Hiffert can sing Ben Bolt beautifully. She snug her appointed song; was called oat a second time, and was clamorously naked for Ben Bolt. She could not comply—or would not, but repeated the song of the bill. Dunn was similarly treated, and acted similarly. The third singer was also called out ; but on attempting to ;follow their example was yelled into silence. The "rag" fell. The dans yen appeared.. After the applause which always greets them had subsided, the Ben Bolt cries again rose. The dancing was stopped. The stage-manager appeared; and with ill-suppressed anger asked the audience what their pleasure was? Ben Bolt, Cried seven-tenths of those pee: ent. He replied that the manager had made a contrast with the public, and. that he• belleVed the! It_had been fulfilled. He couldn't see Hen Bolt in the bill, and again asked them what their pleasure_ was!
