The following article from th e Philadelphia Lager, we commend to the - attention of our city . authorities and directors of the Gas Works. It • Ito long been our opinion that a redaction of the price of gas,in this city would bring a greater re . venni to the company, on account of the article being brought;into more general use than at pre -Uss.—A a reverend gentleman, pastor of one of the ohurohes of this city, is in Eogland, on a missionary tour.' Ina letter dated Coventry, England, November 17, 1862, the last one of a series which are being published in the Christian Ambassador of . NeW York; speaking of the City of Birmingbam, he says: "And when the street and store lamps flashed out on every hand, to cheer the gloom of four o'clock, I - felt that the people should be thankful for gas at five shillings per thousand- cable feet," and then Ina note adds: "The same rate (being about halt of the Philadelphia ' price s ) obtains In Glasgow, Belfast, Dublin, and Manchester. , In the last named place the - titmice are owned by the Corporation. Besides lighting the streets and publlo buildings the nett profit is Z 40,000 per annum—so largely is gad used in_ the' city of Manchester, and so cheaply made." Five shillings sterling is equal to $1 20, and the lowest price for gas in nib- - delphis is $2 26 per thousand cubic feet, while in some of the Distrinte It remains at the cld price of $3 50. It we had but one city govern ment* and one gas works in Philadelphia, would .there then exist any reason why gas could not be mannfisetared as cheap, and as much profit realized from its sale as in the city of Manches ter?... ,vlriF.l.Lazti P. soxiXl.l., rag- ibstbeenstmounnedb7 telegraph ihat tbe Isslidathe Cimino, at liarrhibtlrgh, has ohoOlialle-P.:114144, of Fulton county, f0i.114414g *rum of Representatives.— We. baii' the pleasure of being personally ao quaintid with M. Sometime after Johnston stopped with Hughes , the latter was drowned, and his wife became in sane. She declared her husband the murderer of Johnson, and circumstances gave plausibility to her story. Now Sobnaon turns up in Cali fornia, and the children of Hughes are thus re lieved of the stigma of being the offspring of a murder.
