COIGILECTION.—In our paper of Saturday mem,

The word "despotism" was written nepotism.

of the party. He had a majority itt.the Fifth

system, only blown tithe whig nominee, be has
been cheated:Oet.of the nomination.
That there were frauds practiced in the nomi

we are confident that the friends of Mr. Sawyer
can prove this fact. So fully are they convinced
of it that they are notAisposed to let it pass ma

Mayoralty. They say Alit these frauds hare

beautifully less. They think that the only way
to redeem it is to administer a severe rebuke' to
the man wbo obtained his nomination by unfair

whig politics than plain honesty.
OLE CONCERT,
The Concert given by Ors Bum, at Lafayette
HO, on Saturday' evening, was attended by a
crowded and highly delighted audienee. 911
-Who were present concur in the opinion that it
was aifogether one of the best entertainment
ever•given in this
.city. To attempVtir speak in
praise of the performances of Ora Burs, would
be like gilding refined gold. He is perfect mas

most eloquent music. The words seem to dance
upon the strings! The audience testified te e the
excellence of the performance at the close of each
piece in such a manner as must have been highly
gratifying to the feelings of the distinguished
violinist.
'The singing of Signorina Perri, was truly
wonderful and charming. This_ extraordinary

her execution and the perfeet volume and. melody

FINE LIKENESS OF GEN. PIERCE
Mr. 3. P. BALnwrar, No. 28 Chambers street,
New York, has recently issued a splendid like
ness of Gen. FaAliamil Pinang, President Elect
of the United States. It is taken from a Da
guerreotype, and engraved in the best style of
art by A. H. Britain, Bag. Those who have
seen Gen. PIERCE, pronounce the likeness ad
mirable.,-*Jorin VAN BUREN says "I cheerfully
say that Mr. Baldwin's print is a remarkably
faithful representation of . Gen. Pinang, and is a
very clever work of art." Many other gentle-
men of distinction who are personally acquaint
ed with the President Elect, give similar certifi
cates.
M. F. E. WILLIB, Ohio street, Allegheny City,

Washington and Jackson.
Mr. Bancroft relates the following anecdote of
Washington:
"Once, while In New Jersey, coming out to
mount his horse, he found a child beside it, at
tracted by the trappings. He placed the child
upon the horse's back, and led it round the
yard, pleased with its - youthfal joyance. it
was to Washington 4 honor that, although hea
ven did not bless him with offspring, he had s
heart to love children, and take them to his bo
som."
The historian Ilildreth relates an anecdote of
Gen. Jackson, which exhibits a similar vein of
tondermeas in the character of a man whom we
have been accustomed to regard as stern and
unfeeling' Many like stories are told of Napo
leen. The battle-field presents, always, scenes
which appeal to the tenderest sympathies ofpnr,
nature.
After the battle of the Great Horse Shoe, In
which nearly* thousand Intruins were kftled,
and two hundred aid fifty prisoners were taken,
all women and children, the men having been
exterminated, the following incident occurred:
" The grim 'General, who presided over this
bloody scene, which ;Seem= to carry us back to
the early Indian wars of New England, had
still • tender spot_ In his heart. Moved by the
wail of an Indian infant, picked up from the
field, whose mother had perished during the'
battle, Jackson strove to induce some nursing
women among the prisoners to suckle it. Its
mother Is dead,' was the cold answer, let the
child die, too.' The General, himself a cluldleia
man, then turned nurse blunt:tit. Some brown'
anger fanned a part of his private stores, one
with this he caused the child to be fed. lie even
took it home with him, and reared it up in his
own family. The Indian orphan thus oared for,
grew a bright and thriving boy, and when he
came of age, having chosen and learned a trade,
he was comfortably established as a saddler, at
Nashville."
Confessions of the Murderers of Gardner
and Mailer.
Mama. Gardner and Smith, of this city, re.
ceived a letter yesterday from John Gardner,
who has been engaged for several weeks in fer
reting out the murderers of Mesas. Gardner and
Miller. The letter was written at Moores Hill,
Ind., and states, that Robert Kelley had been
arrested on the charge of participating In the
murder. Shortly after his arrest he made a full
confession of the crime of which he and his
brothers stand charged.
Prom Kelley's statement it appears that the
boat laid up the afternoon previous to the mur
der, and two of the hands, .George" and “Ken
tuck," went ashore to hunt, and not returning in
the evening, they shoved off, and left them.—
While Alexander Gardner and James Millerwere
asleep in bed, and Mr. Holt was asleep before
the stave, and Robert - Kelley asleep below, Mo
ses Kelley came down and awakened him, and
they two murdered the other three. He don't
know how much money was got by the trainee
eon. Moses gave him three dollars to pay his
way home. The Kelley's and others had agreed
to rob boats on the river this winter ; bitt before
they got ehipped, the
hewife of one of the party
woe taken sick, and was compelled to leave,
which frustrated their plans for a time.'
. "The
above was the first opportunity they had of rob
bing a boat, and they embraced it. A portion of
the property stolen has been recovered.
THE LO9B OP TUE WESTERN WORLD.—WB legit
from Captain Montgomery, of the Reindeer, that
he met the hull of the Western World, the boat
that was sunk below Memplde by coming into
collision with the H. It. W. Mil, is Milligan's
Bend, turned bottom upwards. The cabin had'
floated a from the hull, and it was met a'fbi
miles below. Passengers that got on thti Rein
deer at Memphis report the loss of 80 lives by
the disaster, but the mate of the boat asserted
that but 14 were lost, all deck passengere. The
boat and cargo was a total loss; the river for
miles and miles was full of the cargo, and the
people all along shore were reaping a harvest in
fishing it out of the river. The Reindeer had on
board a man who was on the boat and lost three
children. Re resides at Paducah.
We are informed that the collision was caused
by the pilots misunderstanding the signals of
each other. The loss of life ems occasioned by
the fear of passengers on deck, who would not
go to the bow of the boat to get on the other
boat, because she rocked about too much, and
they remained on the deck and were drowned.-
