LES MEM= aiiiiman. deelo W. 7: Bost, Secretory. Since our issue of yesterday, we have been formed that the Whigs have a new " kink" on the Mayeralty, question. The list of names uall4 tug'tirion-Mr. Sawyer to bira candidate, appear:, 'ett in the Glizette of yesterday. That was -right,aad extremely liberal, if not charged for.; Ant the . editorhas a paragraph referring tothel `"ca I" . uPon Mr. S., which shows, his feelings to-c, ,Wardi his •coadjutor of the . Journal, and thel Meanbag of which we will explain after we hr;; T e. copied hialiiiragraph. Xle says: Turmaimurrr.—we w publish ley a Cell very numer-' .ousiy signed, xequostitat Bir:SAtrriut again to ' stand a norm-`• nation for Mayor, and ate planes of the tail. Should 31r.Basryor revolve the nomination, it will give us great plosr so do to support him, and lc) believe he will bo elected. He Is viola and Way respectable citizen, a gentleman orint- My and honor; sad tleserveg well of tho lvtilg party. We publish - mewl with pleasum, and commend his claims to the attention Or Mir Whig follow citizens,. . • ' Now what will the friends of Mr. Riddle say to theaboye paragraph? Is it not invidious and mean, even as it appears in print? He says Mr. S. is, a highly respectable' citizen, a man of pro bity andlionor. Who doubts the assertions ? No one. But we would ask, is not Mr. Riddle, the competitor of Mr. Sawyer, a respectable citizen, and a gentleman of probity and' honor? Will the Gazette dare to whisper a word against his respectability, his probity, or his honor? We are certain it dare not. But the editor and Toe Barkeihave entered into a scheme to defeat our friendUf the Journal. We have heard the lead ing parts of the programme, and it is as follows: •If Mr. Riddle is nominated, Joe Barker will be a candidate, and the editor of the Gazette will once more endorse him as a good Whig, and an original Taylor man. If Mr. Sawyer is nom lztated, Joe will be off the track, and he and the Gazette man will run in a curicle to aid the cause of Sawyer. Weunderstand that Barker's forces are entire ly uncommitted, anti that they are waiting pa tiently to tte° how Biddle and Sawyer will make it... If the-editor of the Journal has one half the• canning of of the Gazette, he should at once seek an interview with Barker and his frieiads, and promise them all kinds of favors if they - edition him. There is nothing wrong in a Whig doing this—it is a part of their system, and as an illustrious manonce remarked, it is jest as "easy as lying." It is said that in the event of Sawyer's elec tion, Barker will be appointed High Constable. This is an arrangement of the editor of the Go tette.. But could not Mr. Biddle head his envi ous neighbor by appointing Barker Constable, and at the same time constitute him the Police Committee? It would ho n very proper arrange ment, and oould not fail to bring out the princi ples of the party in bold relief. We have received from the popular establish ment of A. 11. A TILEATHIS ON SCREW PROPELLERS and other steam Engines, with practical Rules and Exam ples how to calculate and construct the same for any description of vessel, accompanied with a treatise on bodies in motion in fluid, exemplified for propellers and vessels; also, a full descrip tion of a calculating machine ; by J. W. Nystrom. This we regard as one of the most valuable works that has been issued in oar country. It is for sale at the Book Store of our friend B. T. C. Morgan, Wood street. A great musical treat is in store for our citi zens, as will be seen by reference to our adver tisjpg columns. The Wiles Toussy, lately from Paris, where their musical education was finish ed, under the most celebrated masters, intend giving One only concert, on Tuesday evening next, Dec. 14, at Lafayette Hall. We had the pleas ure of attending a private rehearsal, and mast say, in truth and sincerity, that for beauty, pow. er and freshness of voices, and the most perfeot blending of the same in their Duetts, we have never met the equal of these accomplished young ladies— The contralto voice, especially, of M'lle Mina T., is the finest and most voluminous one imaginable. Such was the sensation created by her in New York, that the articles in the Tribune and Herald gave her the appellation of the "Se cond il/boni," the greatest contralto singer that ever camato this country. Their English Duette are moat charming, and we would advise all who are fond of good music, to be sore and attend the concert. Cincinnati, Hillaboroligh and Parker.. burg Railway. The Middle division of this important Railroad is now - advertised for contact, the western divi sion 60 miles having been for some time running and doing a heavy looal business. This line forms a section of the great railway route which Baltimore is so energetically engag ed in pushing forward through Parkersburg, to wards Cincinnati and St. Louts, and has the fall approbation and endorsement of the Baltimore and Ohio, and North Western Virginia Railway .:who regard it as the legitimate ex tension across Ohio of their own lines. The division now td be let 66 miles, it in oal culated, will put coal in Cincinnati at seven cents per bnebel. Coat lands are now valued in . Jackson county at only $lO to $2O per acre. The railway dis tance will be about 112 miles, and this line therefore offers excellent prospects to any of-our enterprising coal men, who , choose to migrate,; and open the,Obio mines in a proper manner. The'Lady 'Suffolk was built and recentlitlatthoh ed at Baltimore, by Adams, Gray & Son, kridirold to Don Julian Zulaeta, for f'28,000. ;She pro ceeded .to- New York; where the shipped anew crew, and sailed thence for Martel on the 3d - of November, arrived et the latter port on the 16th, and on the 16th sailed again for Bahia Honda, where she arrived the same day ; that In the evening, the Spanish Steamer Sirena arrived from Havana, with a crew of seventy men and the usual equipments of a slaver, in addition to which sixteen twelve pounders and one swivel gun were received on board, besides a large quantity of : small arms. The American sailors were detain-d ed prisoners on board the Lady Suffolk, till mid-, night of the 28d, when she'was towed to lei/by the steamer Sirens, which brought the rest of the crew to Havana, with the exception of Capt. Gray and his eon, who had previously come to' this city. The Lady Suffolk was built expressly for Mr. Zulueta, by Messrs. Gray & Son, 'for the purpose of slave trading, and her late errew-say that she is a very fast vesseL She has sailed , with her crew of seventy men for the coast of Africa. She is commanded by a notorious slate captain, who has hithertobeen very successful ,as a slave trader, and who boasts of having mur dered a boat's crew belonging to an English men of-war, a few years ago, who attempted to board him on the coast of Africa. By information from the neighborhood of Trinida4 on the south coast, I learn that several vessels have recently successfully landed cargoes of negroeit in that jurisdiction. A great number of vessels have sailed for the coast of Afriel; whence several expeditions are new expected soon to arrive here, whilst others are busily pre.' paring in this and other ont•ports for renewed adventures; and the English war steamers, which' arrived here from Jamaica a-short time since, aril' now cruising on the coast for the purpose, as r understand, of intercepting some of them. The interpretation which the Spaniards give out as, to the presence of these vessels in their teaters t ; that they have come for their especial protec- tion agaainst Yankee. aggression, is all moon.- shine. The probable capture of one of their sla vers, will, perhaps, undeceive them. Be further gives the following list of ember-, kations of negroes from the Coast of Africa: 400 slaves were landed at Ensenada do Coohinos, near Trinidad. 500 do. at Cammioca, and 670 at Sirria Mo. rino, on the eouth coast of Cuba, in the early part of the year. 106 do. at Santa Cruz, and 400 at Cayo France; near Cardenas, June, 1852. 640 do at Ortigoso, near Mariel, July 16. 400 do. at Rio Zarza, (Trinidad,) Sept. 14. 460 do. at Ortigoso, Sept. 26. 200 do. at Cavanas, near Bahia Honda, about two weeks ago, the Spanish war steamer Isabel being Insight during the whole time the negroes were being landed from a small Spanish brig. DIAIIINE HOSPITAL A friend has handed us the following transla tions from the two German papers, recommend. ing Doctor Gaoss as a suitable person for Physi cian of the Marine Hospital. Doctor 0. is well known to our citizens, and stands high in his profession. We are very much rejoiced to hear the above news. Dr. Herman Gross is generally known here, not only MB a decided and steadfast Demo crat, bat also as an eminent physician. The long time which he has lived within our midst, has placed both beyond a doubt. We would advise the German citizens to sign the petition diligently, and•also exert all their in fluence to obtain many subscribers among their English speaking neighbors. . . The German immigration has. fora long time, deserved well of the Democracy, and always stepped back modestly, when it came to the office spoils. It belongs, however, quite as well to our interest as to our merit, that we are justified in presenting good and able persons of our nation for proper offices, and to demand for them the support of our English speaking fellow Demo crats. We believe that Franklin Pierce will be the President who will take into consideration the adopted citizens. Pierce is inimical to office banters; consequently the horoscope looks bright for Dr. Gross. To work, fellow citizens. ENE _ s;_Y,'z /Wits _of News and itisceßany. Not long ago a handsome house in London became intolerable to residents, who could not endure a mysterious badAmell which pervaded It when shut up from the router air. Consultation was held about drains, and all the particulars that could be thought of, and all in vain. At last a clever young man who examined the honse - from top to bottom, axed suspicions on a certain room where ho inserted a small slip of glassin the wall. It was presently covered, and that repeatedly, with ,a sort of putrid dew. The paper was torn down and behind it was found a mass of old pa pers( an inch thick, stuck together with their lams of size and exhibiting a spectacle which we will not sicken our readers by describing.— Dickens' Household WoSTLI. t , A Good Place for Sportsmen.
