Pittsburgh, Buffalo, and Rochester; - Boston, the great Rail.: road city; New Orleans, the great commercial city of the Smith; Cincinnati and Cleveland; also, the commerce of the . lakes end riders, and the dew York canals; with calettlationrrof what the population and trade will be in future. do not believe, after, a careful examination of these facts and figures, any man will hesitate to recommend the commissionere tojsubscribe to he abeve named road, 'The great trade and commerce on our lakes, which has induced New York to open ten routes to those lakes, and 808. lon to make two railroads, 'one_to Montreal and one to 'Ogdensburg, in addition to her railroad to Albany, should have weight with'our citizens.— Observe the change in 211 yeara in the anthracite coal trade, and consider that in addition to the 660,000 people of these thirteen Counties, all the steamers of the lakee which will carry this in creased 'commerce wilt require fuel. All know that our prosperity depends upon our manatee, tures, and every new avenue opened gives us a new market. There arcynen yet living who packed iron on horses over the Allegheny mountains, In the same way the Spaniards pack sugar in the inte rior of Cuba. David Leech, of Armstrong coun ty, says that• be remembers some fifty years since, when his father was coming over the Alle ghenies; a tree with all its branches was fasten ed to the tail of the wagon to prevent a too rapid deacent in the steep places, and the horses were let go down the mountain without guide or con trol. All remember the indignation aroused among us when the National Road was located through Wheeling. That road was of vast im portance Co Wheeling, encl. - would have been of greater to Pittsburgh, but want of energy lost the route to us. ' . . Observe the:fact that Massachtieetts expended $54,000,000 in railroads, being $14,000,000 more than our State debt, and that the valuation of property in 1840 was $290,000,000, and in 1850, after this iapencliture, it was $580,900,000 ; doub ling in ten years. And that the population of Boston in 1885 was 78,603. Real and personal estate $79,802,600, with 128 miles of railroad in operation; while in 1850 there was 188;788 in habitants; real and personal estate •ained at $180,000,500, with 1180 miles of railroad in ope ration. Her commercial position is not as favo rable as that of New Orleans. When she de pended on commerce alone, her population du plicated but once In twenty-three years; now, when she has made the whole Union tributary to her, by her vast system of railroads, and sends her manufactured articles to all climes, her pop ulation will double in fourteen and a. half years, while New Orleans will double herself in thirty four years, as thus: 1800. 1850. N. 0., let period, 12 years, 34 years, 2d period. Boston, " 28 " 141 ". " The thirteen counties in Pennsylvania benefi cially affected by this road, bad a population in 1850 of 844,725, and had increased since 1840, 185,563. Of minerals they have 887,898 acres, containing coal 741,020 acres, containing iron ore 600,000 acres, containing lime stone and of timber land 1,812,000 acres. Population of the cities in and around Pitts burgh, in 1800, was 1,565, and in 1850, 83,000. The calculations is thatthe population will double every nine years; which would give for 1859, 166,000 inhabitants; 1868, 332,000 inhabitants; and 1877, five years before these bonds become due, 664,000 inhabitants. Population of Cincinnati in 1800, 750, in 1850 125,000; doubling every seven years would be 250.000 in 1867. 609,0000 in 1864, and nearly 2,005,000 in 1877. Cincinnati has two railroads to the Lakes, of which one is finished to New York. Two railroads to Dayton, one to St. Lou is, one to Lexington, one to Louisville, and one to Pnrkersburgh, and others in course of con struction, to all of which she has loaned her bonds for almost $8,000,600. She has two ca nals to the Lakes, and ono into Indiana. Population of Cleveland in 1850, 17,000; dou bling every six years, would give 544,000 inhab itants for 1880. Cleveland has in operation and course of construction seven railroads; two to Toledo, one to Cincinnati, one to New York, one to Wellsville, one to Elyria, and one to Mahoaing. This latter road is for the purpose of transport ing coal to Cleveland, in the same way coal would be transported to Rochester and Buffalo, on the Allegheny Valley Railroad, and their calculation of the profit is worthy of consideration. Taking 600 tons per day, the year ronnd, to be transported 60 miles, at 2 cents per mile, this will yield an income of $lO per mile of road per day, or on a road of 100 miles in length, an in come of $860,000 per year.—pp. 658 it. It. J. In 1820, there were transported to market of anthracite coal, 865 tons. In 1850, tons 3,871,255, valued at $16,000,000. The actual increase in the value of lands due to the 'construction of railroads, is controlled by l eo many circumstances, that an accurate estimate can only be approximated, and must in most cases, fall far short of the foots Taking only the' • farming lauds of the particular distrtet tra versed-by a railroad, where the influence of such a work can be more directly seen, there is no doubt, the increased Value Is many times greater than the cost of the road. It is estimated by the President of the Nashville and Chatanooga Rail road, that the, increased value of a belt of land, ten miles viride, iying.npon each side of its line, is equal to at least $7 60 an acre, or $96,000 for every mile of road, Ali% will cost $20,000 a mile, so that this work has already created a val ue in its influence upottrealproperty alone, equal to abent eiz times Its cost. It is believed that the constructibtiof the 8000 miles of railroad in Ohio, will add to the value of the landed proper ty in the State, at least five times the cost of the road, assuming this to be $60,000,000. But we are not left to conjecture ; the history of Massa chusetts shows the reality: the valuation of that State being in 1840, $290,000,000, went up in ,1840, to $580,000,000. Massachusetts expended $64,000,000 in railroads, and has now 1600 miles in operation, at an average cost of $40,678 a mile, (taming in 1850, 9,500 passengers and 2,600,000 tons of freight.. We have considered the effects of railroads in increasing the value of property, in reference only to lands devoted to agriculture. But snob results do not by any means give the most ford- Me illustration of their value. An acre of farm , ing land can at most be made to yield n small annual income. An acre of coal or iran lands, on the other hand, may produce as many thous ands as the former does dollars. The deposits may be entirely valueless without a railroad.-=', With one, every ton of ore they contain is worth two, three, or four dollars, as the case may be. Take, for example, the coal fields of Pennsylva nia. The value of the , coal sent yearly from there,,ln all the agencies it is called to perform, is beyond all calculation. Upon this article is based our manufacturing establishments; and our merchant and government steamships,-rep resenting value, in their various relations; equal to' thousands of millions of dollars. Without coal;: it isitopossible to conceive the spectacle that we should have presented as a people; so entirely different would have been eurcoudition. Zieither oar commercial, nor our manufacturing, nor,. onseqttently, our agricultural interests could lime borne any relation vrhatever to their present enormous magnitude, (8.. L, 728.) What is true , of thePennsylvrnia coal fields east, ovially tree of those west of the mountains.; The.wittunerait of the Lakes will be enormous; in a few yeari, and thinonsuMption of coal alone would yield a gooOtoome to this road. The year 1860 will dawn on an internal Commerce in the United States valued at not less than $1,800,000,000, including Lake, Canal, River and 'Railway. " Suppose the Mississippi; valley rivers and the northern water routes to have a total move ment of 10,000,000 tons, it ;rebid require ten railways, each with, double ;tracks; stretching from Boston, New York, Philadelphia and Balti. more to New Orleans, via the !,Missiasippi valley and the lake login, making at least 40,000 miles of track, coating ,at least $600,000,000; and taking ten "years to build, to carry their freight. In the meantime, our commerce' would have doubled :twice, erowdhig both land and water routes to their full capacity.' , i After all, it is not the foreign trade - that creates the - wealth of our cities. We trade with foreign- ern with roar surplue, • and prdonre luxuries and comforts in return; but for our sustenance, wo exchange among each other the fruits of our labor. A manufacturing city is therefore, more independent of foreign powers than a commer cial one. DESPISHIO HOUSEHOLD DUTLE3.—From a Varie ty of causes nothing is more common than to find American women who hare not the Slightest idea of household duties. A writer thus nitrides to this subject : In the neglect of household cares, American women stand alone. A German lady, no matter how lofty her rank, never forgets that domestic labors conduce to the health of body and mind alike. An English lady, whether she be only a gentleman's wife or a duke's, does not despise the household, and even though she has a house keeper, devotes a portion of her time to this, her true, her happiest sphere. It has been reserved for our republican fine ladies to beMore choice than even their monarchical and 9,ristooratio sisters. The result is a lassitude of mind, often as fatal to health as the neglect of bodilyiexercise. The wife who leaves her household cares to the ser vants, pays the penalty which has been affixed to idleness since the foundation of the world, and either wilts away from ennui, or is' driven into all aorta of fashionable follies to find employ ment for the mind: Illinois and Indiana Free Banks. We understand that efforts are being made to procure the redemption of the isms of these in stitutions In the city of New York, at the uniform rate of one half of one per cent. Many of these banks are owned in Wall street, and the managers think that If 'their emission could be redeemed there on reasonable terms, that the circulation of York State and New Eng land money would be dispensed with, and that Western bills would enjoy an almost entire mo nopoly. of the small note ciroulStion. Should this arrangement be effected, the proprietors of the banks in our neighboring State would soon realize enormous fortunes, while the business of manufacturing money in tho interior towns of the Eastern States would be a losing operation. We are, however, under the impression that the scheme will not prove eueaessful, from the fact that Eastern capitalists will generally exert their powerful influence against it --St Louis Union. Tire Fun Taws.—The furriers are beginning to do a pretty brisk fall business, and furs erili be very generally worn during the coming win ter. Some of the best descriptions bring ex travagant prices, $l5O or $2OO not being unfre quently given for a set. • A large proportion of the most valuable imported fors go east, the Boston ladles paying high prices rather more readily than New Yorkers. ". The stook of fare now in the Now York ,market is supposed to be worth not far from $2,000,000. The large trad ers haemptooks on hand ranging from $60,000 to SIOOMO. While American ladles cannot be suited with anything found this aide of Hudson's Bay, Greece, or Germany, European ladies are equally anxioun to get furs from the United States, and the rough skins of the fox, fisher or mink, form the interior lining of : the garments of the Russian nobility.
