Li j,U&;llli.M.tbi The F/STIEIVE QUESTION IN TUE COIDIONB.--In the House of Commons on the 14th, Mr. Mac gregor wished to make a few remark's on the pas sage, in the lipeetitt, relating to the misunder standing between this country and the United States, on the North American fisheries. He said not a word against what the government was now doing; but he adverted to it as a question of the greatest importance, one that might have Involved the peace and tranquility of the two countries, have interrupted their commerce, and have cut off our supply of cotton. His views on this question corresponded with those of Mr. Pitt, expressed immediately after the peace of 1783, in the first Presidency of Washington— that the commercial and marine intercourse be tween every part of the British dominions and the - United States ought to be placed on the foot ing of a coasting trade. When he looked at the progress of the great Angto-American Republic, be found that, 93 years ago, the whole British population in Amer ica was confined to &narrow strip along the shore of the Atlantic, and did not altogether amount to 1,809,000. The whole of this country. was now ruled and governed by a people speaking the English language, and, though there were two governments in America, there was really but one people, and the policy that oat to be pur sued in regard to the whole navigation between this country and the United States, was one that would place ns as nearly as possible on the foot ing of a coasting trade. Daring the foreign ad ministration of this country by the noble lord (Palmerston) and the Earl of Aberdeen, amica ble relations INTO kept up between the two coun tries, and the latter made those concessions whit regard to the fisheries which were just and proper. When the questions respecting New Brunswick and Oregon were settled, there did not remain between the two countries a single question in dispute except this-unfortunate one of the fishe ries. The manufacturing and commercial people of this country were anxiously looking forward to its settlement, and now that negotiations were going on, he trusted that it would be adjusted on the principle of free and uninterrupted inter course on both-sides, with respect to the fisheries. He was well acquainted -with the people of the United States, and knowing their wishes on this point, be hoped the government would not lose sight ortlig matter. (Hear; hear.) • Mr. 8. Herbert wished to know from the goy ernmenewhether they expected an early settle ment of the fishery dispute between this country rind the United States. and at what period they would lay on the table the correspondence rela ting to the question. The Chancellor of-the Exchequer said that it would be impossible, in the present state of the negotiations to lay any papers on the table. He could only repeat on this subject, that this gov ernment, and the government of the United States, had entered into the negotiation in the most friendly spirit, and he thought the result would prove satisfactory, and lead to increased com mercial intercourse between the two countries. (Hear.) 'Costume or Wstttsorosz.—The obsequies of the Duke of Wellington excite the largest share of public attention. The day of the funeral will be observed throughout the country as a holiday; all the stores are to be closed and business sus pended. It is scarcely credible the number of persons who have availed themselves of the ap proaching holiday, and the cheap excursion trains to visit the metropolis, with the object of being present at the ceremony. Along the whole line of route of the funeral procession, the windows and balconies are rented at £5 per seat; and even the graveyards—London Graveyards:—.are board ed over and fitted up as ataphitheatres,'to wit ness the spectacle. Eight hundred men have been working night and day in St. Paul's Cathe dral in completing the decorations, and detach ments of troops are arriving from all the garri sons In the country. For some days past the body of the Duke has been lying in state at Chelsea Hospital, and such has been the crowd of persons striving to gain admission that numer ous casualties occurred, and two or three per sons were crushed to death. The expense of the spectacle is £lOO,OOO —half a million of dol lars. 1,752,265 Tux Baum or NAPOLEON rue Gamut—The Baden. correspondent of the Cologne Gazette writes from Carlsruho on the 11th lust: The be trothment of Louts Napoleon with the Princess Carole of Vasa may now be regarded as a oar. tainty; it has, however, as I learn, from moat trustworthy sources, only been brought about after the conquest of great difficulties. Not only were high political advisers against the match, but many warning voices were raised among the family connexions of the lady, to remind her of the unhappy lot of another Princess of Baden.— But the policy of the Grand Dutchees Sthepha rtia, grand mother of the young Princess, and aridness of the bride, have triumphed over eve• ry obstacle. Remarking upon this the London Times says:— " There is every reason to suppose that Louis Napoleon will guard himself as much as possi ble against these contingencies, and that his marring.° will follow very shortly upon his pro clamation and accession. But it is an essential characteristic of the institutions which have late ly been imposed on France, thi4, the seattrity they confer is limited to the duration df a single life, if indeed that be not curtailed by the anxiety and the accidents of such a reign."
