Thus it appears that Soott's name has been as powerless , to con jure with upon the fnr•off coast of the Pacific as upon that of the Atlantic, where the public mind has been from day to day. thoroughly as tounded- by such new devolopements concerning his political opinions as to produce the profound conviction that he has sought political distinc tion, not by a steady adherence to a fixed policy, but by often identifying himself with factions that have passed away with the passions that gave them birth, *being regarded now- but as a school-boy's tale, the wonder of an hour." We give the following bit of information from the same "good authority," as the Journal quot ed. As it is "good authority," let our neigh bor read it at the next meeting of the Scott club, of which he is (we believe) Chairman : "The Democratic members from Tennessee and Kentucky are equally elated with the result in North Carolina, and believe that their own States will follow 'in the footsteps of their pre decessors.' We risk noth ing in saying, that when the editor vrroto the above, he knew better, and was fully aware that the State was democratic by a large vote, not withstanding t moor conceded one member of Congress to the whip. The democrats have carried the Legislature by a handsome majority, and it will go for Pierce and Ring by en over whelming vote. He bad better try another Itoor- back on North Carolina. The Whigs say their candidate *never fainted. Very well. But when they say this, we advise Democrats to nak them whether Gen. geOTT over "bobbed," and then road then the following which occurs in a defence of General (CAI ES, published in the New Orleans Delta, rat Juno 17, 1896 : ,4 Whilst on this station, Gen. Scot; then a Captain of Artillery, had a difficulty with Dr. Upshaw, Surgeon of the Gth regiment, whom be challenged to mortal combat. The bootor at the time WB9 confined to his sick bed, with a disease that threatened his life. However, he conditionally accepted his challenge to tight when convalescent. Subsequently another quar rel arose between the Captain and Dr. Claude, a highly honorable gentleman of the faculty, which resulted in a hostile meeting, and after the mag nanimous Captain delivered his fire, he gave his adversary's ball a free passage, by inclining hie body, or in vulgar parlance, bobbed. This dis graceful conduct excited general disgust on this part of bin friends, and the numerous spectators present, who reproached him for his cowardice. The Captain, with the greatest nonchalance, re plied, "that as no stipulations in the preliminaries forbade il, he had a rt.* to prostrate Unmet! on the ground." This pitiful eubterfugo was appreciat ed in its true light. Had a circumstance of this kind occurred with a private citizen, he would have been branded with contumely and disgrace. What must be the feelings of the gallant Captain, an officer in the confidence of the Government, whose subalterns and men scorned Mm for being a coward and o poltroon? What encouragement could these soldiers have, in the event of meet itigthe enemy, when all confidence wait lost in their commander ? These problems we will leave in the hands of the Commander-in-Chief of the War Department to solve, who, we hesi tate not to say, can appreciate the worst perfidy, and reward tbo most arrant cowardice. From the circumstance of Captain Scott being compelled to visit Washington to be tried by a court-martial, the contemplated fight between him and Dr. Upsbaw did not take place as soon as anticipated. The affair became notorious all over the country, and when the meeting did come off at Natchez, Dr. Upshaw wan very particular in having embodied in tho preliminary arrange ments, "that there ehouki be no DDOKING, nonniso, on DODGING." Those facts are an exemplification of. Captain' Scott's " religious and patriotic ecru e ;" and, perhaps, may bo attributable to his 7oathfcil impetuosity of temper; but we aro sat isfied that early impreSsloris upon his mind were lasting, as be retained the same indelible recol lectione in matnrer ago against Generals Jackson and Gaines." An exchange says that in one thing there is a similiarity between DANIEL NEMER and SCOTT they both ' , bob "—though with this distinction, that the former (who is considerable of an ama teur fisherman) d' bobs" for eels, while the latter "Lobs" for pistol shots. COMMERCIAZ PROSPECTS.—The New York Post says that that city is just commencing its fall business, which thus far compares favorably with the corresponding season of last year. Then, a money crisis, bad just occurred, very unfavorable to the fall trade, and to the credit and standing of mauy dealers. Now, on the contrary everything looks promising.— Payments are making, both by western and southern dealers, with. great regularity and promptness. The credit of city dealers is sound, and surplus balances with them ore -far. more common than usual, as Is shown by the compar itively small amount of their paper offering for discount in the market. . The woollen trade has beea exceedingly ;active the last week or two. Prices have risen 'and dealers freely express the opinion that their trade this season will be better than for any preceoding years, both as to extent, profits and 'payments. The trade in dress goods has commenced favor- ably, with a good ilimand and moderate stocks. The supply Is- hardly as groat as . usual at the commence m ent of a - season, and a con tinned demand will be', met :by latellitsupplies, both foreign and domestic. This would seam to insure steadiness in prices, there not being any prospect that a glut of goods will be thrown upon the market. A previous knowledge of an over supply often leads dealers, as it did last year, to defer their fall purchases, in anticipa tion of a decline. The steady rise of cotton will insure a maintenance of current rates for cotton goods, as the supply, though ample was never so well regulated as it appears ibis , year. Com mission houses and importers alike enjoy the prospect of a l.arge and profitable business. The circumstances of the country favor a large demand. The very large cotton crop at the south, reach ing over 9,000,000 bales, from which good price s have boon realized, has made money abundant and given to the mitton-growing states the basis for large purchases, while their stocks are re ported low. • In the west, sonthwest and north, the farmers are usually prosperous, as may be inferred from the fact that their stocks from last year's grain harvest have not been fieely bent'forward. The wool clip of this year has , been a full ono and has been generally disposed of • to advan tage, thus placing a large amount of cash in pos 7 anion of the farmers, of which the country meri chants are feeling the benefit. The prosperity of the cotton grower is scour• od another year, for the stock remaining over is universally light ; the crop having been early sent to market and realised, and hence produced higher prices at the close of the season, This will leave the market favorably situated for 'the new crop; if it should be , rendered small by ca• lamity.yet nnforseen, prices , will rise, and that will make amends fee the small quantitY, and if it should equal or more than equal the, crop of thi s season, a large amount of money will bo s h are d by the whole south next year, thus insur ing a good trade in every article of southern eon sumption. The wheat and corn ha:Teets of the year pro mises well. The prospeots of a foreign demand are not so bright A slapping demand, to a greater or less extent,•however t .there always is; and as the consumption in Great Britain increas es every year in greater proportion than the 4ome supply, it follows that her importations must in- Tile exports of , wheat to Great Britain for the year closing with this month _ are just double what.they were last year, without the stimulus OF high:l3l . .lnel; and an , increase in every year, 41er:ordinary cirounistances,_ is certain. The home consumption of bieadstuffsineremes still uore'rapidly every year, math° increasing bar vest will not be more than sufficient for the in creasing demand at moderate prices. The harvest at the west is mostly secured and in goad amdition. la northern Ohio, Michigan, and Indiana, tht;re will be an, average yleid-..pee wore; while the number of acres under culture has been far extended. WisconFio will yield a good crop._ Canada will produce more than an average crop. - - :It is too early to know anything about the corn crop, but it will be large, from an extended planting and it will be wanted for hog fattening for market. The exports of beef and pork will be vary lnige, from the great impulse to con sumption by emigration to Australia. The large amount that will be reared this sea son mast distribute large sums of money late in the autwn throughout tho western and south wentern Oates', which will continue the prosper ty that the grain harvest have commenced. Production has received a most powerful im• pitleaSrom the increased supply of money. It iiiaivorable omen for a confined prosperity, tbnCtiiit abundance of money is wide spread:— Ititi not plentifutozdy in Wall street and among a few capitaliste,-liitythe supply has reached over the land, fertilizing wherever it has spread. That sure criterion of prosperity exists—au increased and increasing demand, with an in creased and increasing supply of leading arti cles of exchange. , - The regular supply of the precious metals is now so largo and so reliable, and retained in the country in eo large a proportion s that fluctua tions in the money market are not likely to be so great in amount or so often in occurrence, as to disturb the regular operatious of trade. An over fresh supply will keep money matters easy. Previous to the discovery of the mines in Cal. ifornia, the troubles in trade and commerce was, the great increase in tbe dumber of eichanges among mankind without a corresponding in crease in that circulating medium. which alone is safe and general, or world-wide. ..That diM culty Is now removed; and greater system nod regularity rill ensue. IRVING AND IK lAHVEL• The editor of the Springfield . Republicablhue sketches these two literary celebrities, as be seen them at Saratoga, a few days since: A medium sized old gentleman with a feeble voice—or a cracked voice—there is no character in it—vita talking with a friend, and the friend listens with deep respect to every word.. You see gentlemen walking, as re are, purposely down the plaza to look at him—carelessly, of course, and with no apparent rudeness. You study his features, but you find nothing remark able in them. - Ile isaz plainly dressed, plain, sober looking old men, without a look above n respectablemediocrity, and you are surprised to hear that you have been looking it the author of the Sketch Book, Washington Irving. The ladies would give anything to be introduced, and the gentlemen probably hope they : will he disappoint ed. But here comes the object of our thoughts in an U12C01:15610013 saunter, dressed in a fight, plain summer ri g , and all unmindful of the . lleart itching that is fe lt on every nide iu his behalf. An acquaintance takes his cordial hand and tells him that he IS bound for Sharon Springs, and that he . only stops at Saratoga forthe night. and as 50026 tall Whiskeraodo looks at him nokauce, as if about to swallow him, he bids his friend good evening, and we pass on. She was the. daughter of Mr. John Duff, a well known actor, who came to America about thirty-two years since. She enter ed upon the stage at the ago of sixteen, and con tinued in the profession until a few months pri or to her death, when a pirotracted sickness kept her confined to the sick room until she was re, moved by the hand of death. The announcement will bo received with mingled feelings of surprise and regret, by a host of friends and acquaintan ces. She died at the age of thirty•two. The scenes of her early triumphs were In the theatres of Boston, New York, and Philadelphia, where, after a series of years, she earned a reputation of a most enviable character. About this period she made her appearance in the west and south, where she added new laurels to her fame. As an actress Miss buff combined with her highhis trim% ability, the rare qnnlity of personal beau ty. She was tall and commanding, with a fault. less figure! Her face was sweet and expressive, which she possessed the power to control with astonishing effect on the audience. Her voice, too, was rich and musical, and under per fect discipline, being able to modulate its tones for whatever scenes it became incumbent for her to appear, and her reading - was chaste and cor rect, showing a just and high conception of char-- eater. Her death has occasioned a void on the stage which cannot well be replaced. Miss Dail was married to Mr. D. R. Allen, a pupil of Mr. W. H. Chippendale, and a promis ing young actor, about fear years since, and the loss ors° talented and affectionate a companion falls heavily upon him. , A VALUABLE GOLD MINE IN SOUTH CALIOLINA. —Wm. B. Dome, Esq., of Abbeville District, S. C., has a gold mine on his farm from which he has taken since the let of March last, the sum of eighty.four thousand si:ty•ono and a half owta of gold, with only eight hands, and a small circle mill, propelled by two mules, which only pulverizes about fifteen bushels of ore per day. A gentleman writing from the mine to the Dah lonega Signal, says : " The vein widens as they go down, and 'retains its usual richness. They are not yet within for ty feet of water level: Should it pass water le vel and retain Its present size and richness, the probability is that its end Will never be reached by the present generation: If the rich shoot that ho is now operating on. iihould give out at water level, he has then got the best gold wino tluit I know anything about.
