()PEEING OF TEE BAIL BOLD TO WOOSTER Having just returned from this celebration, we • "imie neither time nor space to give it such ante tree' as It' deserves—An extra number of cars were placed upon the Road on Tuesday morning to accommodate all who desired to take part in the festivs.l, and they were crowded to excess.— When the train arrived in the neighborhood of Wooster, the enthusiasm of the people eteeeded - any thing we hod ever seen before. It would be folly to attempt to enumerate their numbers. For miles along the Road, the vieiters were hail ed with cheers from the tens of thousands, and thoir shoats were echoed loud and long. When the passengers left the cars, they were received with the firing of cannon and the enthusiastic cheers of the citizens. The vast multitude then marched to a beautiful grove in the neighborhood of the city, where the most ample arrangements had been made by the people of Wooster, to ac commodate their guests in the way of a well pre pared dinner. The ceremonies of the day commenced with = appropriate address from Judge DCAN, who had been selected to welcome the visiters to Wooster. He was replied to by Gen. Remises in a few felicitous remarks, after which the com pany sat down to the very abundant dinner pro vided by Mr. Howard of the American House.— Subsequently Mr. Harris, of Stark"; addressed the meeting in . a speech of some length. He was follower by Mr. RODEQTA, a gentleman with whose abilities the community is •well acquaint ed, and short but appropriate addresses from Mayor Guthrie of Pittsburgh, Mayor Fleming of Allegheny, Messrs. Schriver, Lorimer, it. Mc- Knight, Eeq., Mr. Jones of Massillon, and sever al other gentlemen. In the evening a Firemen's Procession took place, and we must say that, highly as we es teem our Firemen as a body, and applaud their • • promptness and energy when their services are required, yet some of them might have been taught a useful lesson from the peaceable and decorous proceedings or their Wooster brethren. Their engines were decorated with beautiful and appropriate wreaths and transparencies, and . their large procession was conducted with a re gard to good order that delighted all who beheld it. During the evening displays of fireworks took place in various parts of the city, and the ' whole was concluded by sending up a large bal loon which sailed through the air with velocity until he dimensions dwindled into a mere speck. There was not one who came away from the cele bration, that does not consider it an event to be remembered, and only long for an opportunity to reciprocate the hospitality •of their generous friends in Wooster. The invited guests from Pittsburgh, AUeghe ny, Salem, Canton, Columbiana, Massillon, &0., inattendance to celebrate the opening of the road to Wooster; met in the American House yesterday - morning, when the Hon. The Bal timore Argus states that Col.. hfcSalg, of Cum berland, and _Mr. Brewer, late of AtuMpolis, both formerly active and leading Whigs, :were among the speakers. Col. MoKaig spoke for an hour and 5 half, in the come of which ho reviewed tgeiirinciples and practice of the two parties, the merits and capabilities of.the two candidates, and showed why, as an honest friend of the Ca ton, he was compelled to abandon the party, and refuse to vote for Gen. AN OBITTARIts DIED 111 Washington, D. C., of a doso of the compromise, the BorrnEax Plass aged about two years. By the above notice, it will be seen that the secessionist organ in Washington, is now num bered among the things that were. The Penn sylvanian in speaking of the mournful event, expresies its opinion that the departed never got over a dose of compromise, so fatal to infants of such a temperament, that was administered by direction of Congress when It was only a few weeks old. It turned pale at once, and never held up its bead afterwards. It lisped for dis union in its earliest days, and for consistency's sake, hos yielded to a disunion of its soul and body, rather than make any compromise with death that might shake its principles. Its prin ciples have ' died, let us hope, and are buried with it, and there let them rest. The follow lig epitaph. should be at once inscribed on its tomb-- "Since Ivo veil , soon tun done for, I Yonder whet I we. 4 begun for." The Uilliborough-Convention. The' New Hampshire State Committee have called a grand mass convention of the Democracy of the Granite State, to be holden at the birth place and former residence of General Pierce, Hillsborough, on Thursday the nineteenth inst., to take measures to promote the success of Pierce and King. Distinguiehed speakers have been in vited,a splendid barbecue will be prepared, and everything promiees a noble gathering. A meeting of the eons of this State at such a place, and for such a purpose, nil' be no ordinary affair. It will be an event in political history. This sight will bo worth seeing. It will.be a gathering of the people who have received their lessons from such men as Lnngdon and Stark, Hill and Wood bury ; men who stood by Jackson In the stormi est days just as they are now about to rally around Pierce to support the Constitution. This convention will give a fresh impetus not only to the Democracy of New Hampshire but to that of New England. Fatal Accident In Crawford County We learn from the Meadville papers that Thomas Merriman, eon of Oeorge Merriman, Esq., of Crawford county, in the 16th year of his age. The young man was with his father, who was superintending his work on the Penn sylvania Railroad. A derrick (used for raising heavy atone and timber,) fell over and struck both father and eon. The eon received the full force of the falling machine, and lingered until the 2d inst., when death put an end to bie suf fering& A sod of Mr. J. H. Beardsleo, of Hayfield tp., in the same county about a fortnight since, fell - from the top of a load of bay upon the wa gon tongue, which occasioned the horses to run away, injuring the lad 00 as to cause his death a few days afterwards. A son of Mr. Henry Manville, of Cnssowago tp., also in Crawford county aged about fourteen years, on the 4th inst., fell from the top of a load of hay under the wheels, which passed over his head causing his death within fifteen min utes. SAFETY OF CAPT. MATLCT AND MS COMILIAND Again after two or three reiterations of the rumored massacre of Capt. Marcy and his command in the Western wilderness, we have a positive denial of the statement, which is no doubt correct, showing the painfultamor to have been only a fabrication. So we are informed in a telegrapbio despatch from New Orleans, based on the authority of the. Gazette published at Little Rock, Arkansas. This paper, which is of the 80th ult., pronounces in the most emphatic terms, that the story is a hoax—and this on the authority of a statement from Fort Arbuckle, far out goothe plains in the Indian territory. So we mayAlen elder this distressing story now at rest—thorigh it has doubtless caused much pain to the friends and families of the parties, who are now happily relieved from further anxiety and pain. NEW RAILROAD ENTERPIIISE.-A new railroad is about to be constructed from Buffalo to Niagara Falls, to be called the "Niagara Falls, Buffalo and New York Railroad." This road is designed to connect with a new road to be constricted from the Falls, through Canada to a point in Michigan. A much shorter route to •DetrAt, Chicago, &0 . , will thus bo obtained than any now'in existence. The Philadelphia Bulletin says: "we understand that it is the intention of the llornellsville Railroad Company to establish, shortly; a route from New 'York to Buffalo, by way of the Brio Railroad to Batavia, and thence to Buffalo, by the old roads—the fare over which is to be but five dollars from New York to Buffalo." AITSTILALLII4 GOLD.—The editor of the Phila delphia American has been shown several bean dial pieces of Australian gold, weighing in all three ounces, and imported from London by the United States Mint as specimens. When the intelli gence of this event first reached us, by telegraph, I promptly wrote to some friends, who had asked my advice, recommending him warmly to their enpport, unless the Convention should place him -upon a . false platform, by adopting the so-called 'I Ceinpromise" as an article of the party creed. I feared such might be the case from the nomination of Mr. King, whose course, on some of the compromise measures, was not approved by a large majority of the Democracy of Missis sippi, but until itwas known that the convention had insubstance endorsed the compromise, and declared it a finality, 1 had determined to give a sincere and active support to , the ticket. - The ill-judged sot has, however, created ob jections which seem to me insapportable to those who have taken the positions and maintain the opinions that I do. , He then goes on to consider the .
