TELEGRAPH NEWS We cannot imagine the reason the Telegraph playa tad such flimsy tricks in regard to the elec tion news. It seems to take particular pains to withhold froui the public any news of Democratic triumphs at the polio, and furnishes all the street rumors and all"that " the Republic" says In regard to Whig successes. For instance,. Itisrox has.been elected to Congress from the St.' Louis district of Missouri—so letters inform as; but telegraph merely says the matter is in doubt; . it giveii ni, however. a report of Miller's election,in the upper part of the State, as gots pcL If the telegraph company will allow its agents tq'be controlled by politicians, it had bet. ter knit downits lines and make room for a com pany whn know no party, and who will regulate their subordinates. Few persons in the West understand the ex• citement that exists on the sca board in relation to the Fisheries on the coast of British America. If the immense steam marine on our Western rivers was threatened by a foreign foe, with de struction, it would cause no deeper feeling than does the perilous condition of our valuable Fieh eries, the inhabitants of the Atlantic sea board. It is not only in a pecuniary point of view that they are valuable to us, for the fisheriei are, in fact, the nursery of our military marine. " Both the French and English Governments foster their fishermen—the French by . a bounty, and the English government 14 laws protecting British seamen engaged in fishing ; she owes it to the hardy seamen that she has educated that her commerce has been found in every part of the .world; and it is also to them she is indebted for maintaining a naval superiority over any other maritime power. Our Fiiheries. are also of great importance, when we examine, them in a pecuniary point of view, and also as to the number of men they employ. The American tonnage employed in -these fisheries at the close of the fiscal year 1851, amounted in the total, to 146,155 84-100 tone—a fleet which, in another ago of the world, would have been regarded as adequate to the commercial purpose of a whole nation. The smote production of our fisheries must be at least from $3,000,000 to $4,000,000. Some years they may exceed that sum. Tho re port of the inspector general of fish, in Massa ohnsette, gives the quantity and value of the mackerel alone inspected by him in 1851. Ile puts down 940 vessele, making 59,417 tons, with 9,998 men. More than one-half of the mackerel caught, was procured in the present prohibited ground; ' The following isa statement of the tonnage of vessels employed in the fisheries of the United States each year from June, 1843, to June, 1851: Year - Cod Mackerel Total. -t - - . . • 72,998 ! 1844.: 85,224 16,170 101,894 1845-'". 76,990 21,413 98,208 1846. - • • 79,818 36,463 115,781 1847 • 78,280 81,451 109,781 1848 • - 89,866 43,658 183,414 1849 81,695 42,942 124,687 1860 93,806 - 68,1.12 151,918 1851 95,616 60,589 116,155 To show the hazard and loss of life which Is incurred by the fishermen, we see It stated that during the year 1851, forty-nine - vessels were lost while engaged in this perilous pursuit ; the loss of property was not so great, amOnnting to only $83,266; but the loss of life amounted to 219 persons. This loss was suffered bYsiz ship- ping ports only'; and 'if a correct List could be obtained from , all the fishing ports, it would be found muoh heavier. Mr. Swina, 'therefore; approved of Scorr'.a judgment and principles, WI reflected thus : "We think we are LIBERAL ENOUGH, w hen, in providing for America. ice leave the door of admission cpen. to the. da2dren - of Foreigners, now abroad, who may.heregfler be barn here, WITH OUT ALLOWING THEIR FATHERS TO COME AND HELP TD oorERN-.us! Now are like this in Mr. Ewing ; we really do It shows him to bee frank man, and that ho likes frankness in others. It itt creditable too, in Gen. Scott having so high an indorser on that popular and populous occasion; for Mr. Ewing is a man of great mind and large experience.— It is true, we mast frankly admit, that thejudg nzent of Gen. Scott, in holding and avowing such principles, is not in the estimation of very many people, the wisest and moat liberal, but people can't all think alike in this free country t Some people even condemn Gen. , ficott for holding to and advocating such principles, and go so fares to say that thiy won't von for him. Some stay, too, thatlhe fact of Mr. Ewing approving of such doctrines, don't make them any sounder, or their author any wiser. Well, that is only a difference of judgment,, and although the great majority may side against both Scott and Ewing, yet that is no evidence whatever that those gentlemen ore not honest and sincere in advocating their prin- We think ourselves that if Gen. After serving nine years in Congress—four years in the House, and five years in tho Senate —Franklin Pierce In 1842 fesigned his seat in the latter. He was one of the youngest men that ever held a Beat in either brunch. The journals of that day do justice to the reputation which be bad acquired. To say nothing of what Democratic papers said, take the two followlog 'extracts to show the feeling entertained towards him by his political opponents. The Washington correspondent of the New York Journal of Commerce, a political opponent, thus spoke of Gen. Pierce's standing in the Sen ate and-at Washington:— ""In the Senate to-day, the resignation of Sen ator Pierce ofNow Hampshire was read, and the President pto tem was direbted to inform the Goveraor of New Hampshire of the resignation. Mr. Pierce retires at the early age of thirty seven from the distinguished positionto has so long and honorably held as a member of the House and of the senate, for last nine years. He has achieved for himself an honorable name —one that is worthy of his patriotic and chival rous descent." One of the editors of the N. Y, Express, shwa political opponent, .writing from Washington to his paper, spoke of Oen. Pierce to the following complimentary terms: "Hon. F. Pierce, U. S. Senator from tbe State of New Hampshire, has resigned his seat In the Senate. Mr.' Pierce will hardly bare a more 60- ceptable man to succeed him. To his political friends he was partisan enough to be always faithful to the party ofwhich hefts ft member. He was &faithful member of the Senate, and .much more unexceptionable to his opponents than =toy orhis opponents. Star, Whig, published under the eye and influence of Ifezican Tom Corwin, in 1848 bold the following language about General Scott: "Scott in his General Orders, No. 849, dis plays a vast amount of envy and jealousy, and plain enough accuses Worth and other general officers with having procared the services of cer tain officers to write scandalous letters in praise :of their own exploits, and against the 'truth of history.' From the West, tho South, the great central portion —from every section of our broad laud we hear but one voice ; and that is a voice of cofidence in our success, and of resolute determination to win it. The Democratic press, our public men, the letters of private individuals all over the country, all speak in the same • strain ; all as sure us that „ the work goes bravely on ;" all speak the satiefaction of the zeal, the harmony, the confident nativity of our friends, and the dis satisfaotton and disunion among the enemy.— Every thing in the political horoscope betokens the dawning of a brighter day for the country, when honest men will be placed in power, to restore the government to the old republican track, to reform the gross abuses of federalism, to elevate our national character abroad, and to confine the government to the legitimate sphere at home. This will be the result of the triumph of the Democracy 'in the Presidential election, and to secure that" result requires only the con tinuous, harmonious, united, and energetic action of every true friend of Democratic principles— requires only the continuance, through the campaign, of the slime Spirit which now every whore prevails. The following extracts from private letters from prominent indviduale In the places named, received within the last few days, will give our readers some Idea of the spirit which pervades the Democracy, and of the bright and cheering prospects of our cense. Sem is re pudiated here by many good whigs, and will not receive the votes of much more than three-fourths of the party. Netobern.—" The prospects of carrying North Carolina for our ticket were never more flatter ing." Passmvana.—Somerset.—u We are all uni ted to a man; I. don't know a Democrat who will not work for Pierce awl King. They are all up and doing—our full atiength will be polled. We will do our duty in putting the old ' Keystone' in the Deniocratio column. The nomination of Scott don't tako well with the whigs ; some prom inent men of chi's county refuse to support him. Yor Instance, Judge Kimmell won't tonoh him, but will vote for Pierce, if Webster is not a can didate. Several prominent men in the south of 'this county also refuse to support Scott. From the wljologing counties, we bear the same good news." Union Town, Fayette Co.—" We expect to give Pierce and King over ell hundred majority in this county." Gettysbury.—" The Democrats here ore in high hopes, and will leave nothing undone to secure emcees% The Old Keystone,' believe me, will not fail in the battle." Philadelphia.—" As regarth the political hori zon in this region, every thing looks quite cheer ing. 1 have °tea aeorersl person from the in terior of the State lately, and all give good ac counts of the, union and activity of the Demo cruel." Vetlw3.- 4, The Demooracy hero are united and confident of success, and we en ter the canvass with a very flattering prospect of carrying this county. Having been at several points in this State, since the nominations by our Convention, I speak confidently when I say that the “lioosicr State" sill send to the sou of the Granite State a majority that will make her citizens rejoice. No Democrat that I 111146 seen counts less than 10,000, and some'ne high as 26,000." Another letter from the 33.11117 county says: In 1840, Harrison carried this county by a . majority of 600; Gen. Taylor by about 1384 and this year wo folly believe that our gallant etand ard-bear, Frank Pierce, wilkdeem the county. The Whigs are moving heaM and earth to con vince the Catholics that General Pierce is against them ; but as yet they have effected nothing.— The whiga at first denied the genuineness of Soott's Native American letter; but they now console themselves, and attempt to gull the foreigners, with his contradictory letter to W. E. Robinson." Hzsvuok - t—Hickman.— ,, We are in high spirits since the alai; nomination. Many very prominent whiga in our community swear that no consideration can induce them to vote for Scott." Louisville--"We can carry Kentucky for Pierce and King. This is the general opinion of the Democracy." Clarksville.—"Our organization will be com plete in this section. The whige are active in their preparations for another hard eider cam paign, but I doubt whether the people can be brought to the shout." Covington.—" The Democracy of our section are in fine spirits. In all estimates, place Ken tucky for Pierce and King." Viscousui.—Racine—"We anticipate a Dem ocratic) majority larger than ever in our State, in the November election." FLORIDA.—JaCI4OII9I/le."Our prospects in this State are of the brightest kind, the nomina tion of Scott making Florida Democratic beyond a peradventure." 'Tallahaesee.—"With such nominees we cannot fall to succeed. Whilst Florida would have been satisfied with either of the great statesmen occupying the first position in the hearts of her people, still we hope to render a better account for Pierce and King." Nov Youg. 7 -.Tericho.--"We feel very well here,- and will give our usual vote and majority in this county, and I think a good majority in t he State." VlRGlNlA.—Buzekland.—iiThe nomination of Pierce is cordially received hero ; that of Scott, coldly—he will be a dead weight for hie party to. carry." Page county.—" The right wing of the 'Tenth Legioehas buckled on its armor ready to do bottle 'ea in days of yore.' Little Page will giio Pierce and King at least one thousand ma loOty." :Brunswick county.—"Plorce and King will carry the State of Virginia by 20,000 majority; you may set that down as the lowest calculation. Soott men are very scarce about here; there is not the least possible chance of his carrying his own county (Dinwiddie) where he was born.— I have seen many men from that county (which joins this) and not ono who says he will vote for Scott." Aranesta.--Taladega.--liThe Democracy here ere firm and united; the whige broken and die spirited. Set down Alabama as a competitor for the banner. We intend to give the largest majority to the gallant Pierce and our own loved King." 325 272 Micrnams.--Flint.—"The Democratic fires ars 'burning brightly in Michigan. The indica tions throughout the . E3 tato are good, and we shall Site Pierce a rousing majority." Outo.--Netoark.—A letter enolosing the mo aoy for a number of a copies of the Patriot, days: would enclose a larger sum, bat for the fact that your candidate has a 4 sure thing' in Ohlo, whether the documents are dissemlna, tad or not ; and I want all my money to put on Pierce. It is hoped here that come August elec tiOn may go for Scott, so that we can get readier bot out of the 'nags. Such re-action I think hopeless." MISSISSIPPL—The Natchez Free Trader soya that at a Democratio ratification meeting in Jef ferson county, , in that State, 4 'four of the most influential whige of that county came forward and gave in their adhesion to Pierce and King." The same paper intimates that three of the sev en Whig candidates for electors are about to take the same step. A few days since, besides publishing a numer ous list of whig congressmen who will not sup port. Scott, we gave the names of a number of other distinguished whiga who had : declared their hostility . to his election. We now give another list of active and influential wbigs who are earnest in their .opposition to Gen. Scott, and who will carry that opposition to the ballot box. Ephraim H. Poster, who will be remembered as an able U. S. Senator from Tennessee, only a few years since, and who has stumped that State for the whip, 'whenever they have carried it, has openly taken ground against Scott. Col. blellaig, in 1849 a whig candidate for Congress in Maryland, addressed*the Pierce and King ratification meeting at Cumberland, in that State, and gave his reasons for wupporting the Democratic nominees. Ile` said that thou sands of other wbigs would also vote for Gen. Pierce. Samuel Hooper and MIME= D. Swan, promi nent whigs of Massachusetts; not being willing to support Scott, Lave resigned their places as members of the whig State Central Committee, Gen. James Ali Der, Connelly whig Mayor of Newark, N. 3., has taken ground against the election of Gen. Scott. - Charles Jenkins, of Augusta, the leader of the Georgia whips, hatf t :vrritten a strong letter against Scott. Items of Now. and ELiscollany. The intelli gence was sent to the city by Isaac B. Welborn°, Esq., the clerk and a - principal owner of the boat, and therefore may be relied on for Its an thentioity.
