Mail on the 9th of Juno, between thiaoity and Hollidayg burgb, were brought town.onThursdayeven ing,- and" had a hearing: before: the - May or on Saturday morning and afternoon, ~ Joseph Kline, n Constable residing in Greens burgb;-testified that on Wednesday evening last he received a warrant from Mr, Beatty .and John Qcorge for the - arrest of Joseph Campbell, who was charged with the larceny of money from John Beatty, of Westmoreland county. When the coaches arrived ,at Grcensburgh, on the evening of Wednesday, Campbell was pointed out to him, and he arrestedhim, and on search ing him, he found a great , deal of paper money, —about $3,500 in bank notes} one package he bad rolled np in a handkerchief, and was placed inside of,his.vest, besides rolls of money in 'his pockets and boots, ''- -lie then , lodged 'him in jail on suspicion, of robbing the U. S, mail, : Camp bell told several stories of tho, manner in which he came in possessionof the packages. : He Baid he found them in the oars one and two weeks ago. A warrant was then issued and placed in Mr, Kline's handsfor the arrest of the two bro-; there of : Campbell; Mr. R. proceeded to Beat ty’s Station and: arrested them, but in searching them, found-nothing-to- connect them with the robbery. These men were engaged in removing, baggage froa the coaches to the care at Beatty’s Station. Mr. K. took them to Greensburgh, where ho.procured a writ of removal from Judge Burrell ahd brought them to this city; nnd hand ed the three brothers over to the custody of the D. S. Marshal, James C. Bowyer, ticket agent at Beatty’s Sta tion, testified that on Wednesday evening, Jo seph Campbell told, him he was going to Pitts- ? burgh ;, at Randolph he got on the Same coach with Campbell, and. saw him arrested and searched at Greensburgh. Mr. Bowyer’s testi vnony confirmed,’Mr. Kline’s, in relation to tho concealment, of money about the person of Jo seph Campbell, who was breakman'on the passen ger cars at Beatty’s Station and Hollidaysbnrgb. The mails are carried-in one end of the car, and tho baggage in the oilier. He did not hoar that the mail was robbed on the 9th of Jane, until Campbell-was arrested. . Judge Burrell, of Greensburgh, testified that he was in tho room where Campbell was umlor . arrest, and after he was committed, to.prison: the loose money was counted by Col. Marchand, ■ of Greensburgh, and - Major Hncke, of Pittsburgh, Col. M. made out a . list of the money, in the presence of the Judgo and of. Esq»Wyse. The -packages and the: loose money taken from; the defendantj-wero enclosed by the Judge, and. seal ed., These packages, and: the carpet bag which Campbell hadin his possession, are in the hands of Col. Marchand, Treasurer of Westmoreland county, subject to Judge Burrell’s order... (The money in their hands,.counted hastily, amounted to sB,44l—amongst which were soveral:drafts.) . Judge Burrell also, presented a list of the drafts and money found in his possession. Our Postmaster,. Mr. Roseburg, testified to a list of letters mailed from this city, to the east, \ in the isail of Juno 9tb. I* Joseph Campbell was committed to prison for a further heating, on Saturday next, and Wat son and 'Martin Campbell for a farther hearing on to-morrow. C. Tarr; alias John Criso, and John ■ Woodward, - alias John Pool; were brought into .court on Saturday to receive their - sentence forpassing coanterfeitmoney. of which they had been convicted on Friday, Theprison ers resided inWestmorelond county and came to Pittsburgh, on the 18th of February last; in the evening they went to the Theatre, where they offered four several counterfeit notea to Col. Whitney, the treasurer./ Mr. Whitney at once dotcotcd their worthlessness, and directed an of ficer to watch their movements. They subse quently offered another note, and were then ta keninto custody. Daring their progress from the Theatre to the Mayor’s office, the prisoners : threw ttlarge quantity of spurious money out of their pockets into the street. They were com mitted by the Mayor for trial. Judge M’Cluro sentenced them to be impris- oned in the Western Penitentiary for the term of three years, and they were conveyed across the - river on Satnrday, and placed uuderthc charge ' of Major Beckham, by Jailor Fox. - Patting Counterfeit Money.— Fredrick Kohohof, a drover, made information ouSaturduy, before Aid* Parkinson, of the Fifth Ward, charging Johnßoneh, of XavrrenoeviUe, with, passing a counterfeit two dollar note on him. The note was on the Washington Bank of Ohio. Kohohof also charged liouch with giving him another note averring it was good—hut they both turned out to be counterfeit. A warrant was issued for the arrest of Roach. • Sebastian Gartz also made a complaint before | the same Alderman, against a man named Du« gan, for whom he had worked, for passing a , counterfeit five dollar.noto, on the State Bank of Ohio,'on him, ns pay in paTt for his labor. A. warrant was issued for the arrest of Dugan.— Prom the appearance of the note, wo think the • man who would, take such abill.sbould be pun ished along with tho person .who gave it out —it was the most miserable attempt to counterfeit rag money we have ever seen. A -Great BiU.— Mr. G. W. Jamieson takes a benefit this evening, at the Theatre, on which occasion lie-will be assisted by Mr. RTBride and Mr.'Gallagher. The splendid historical tragedy of Julius Ccesar will be presented, in which Mr.. Effcclt of Liquor.—X man (?)—we forbear to give his name.—made n complaint before Aid. Parkinson, on Friday, against his wife for being drank, and, as ho alleged, unable to attend to her household duties. She was sent to tho hill for 24 hours.
