Nathaniel Nichols, an Irish man, about 23 years of ago, was killed by the foiling in of a large lot of Blate from the roof of a coal bank, on the hill east of Wilkinsburg.— Nichols boarded with a gentleman in Wilkins burg—and, as he did not come home, on Wednes day evening, the gentleman thought some acci dent must have occurred, and proceeded to the! cool bank in search of him, where he found Nichols crushed under the weight of about two tons of slate; his head and the upper part of hiß body mangled in a most horrible manner. Mr. Nichols resided at Braddock’s Fields, on the Monongahela river, previous to his working in Wilkinsburg, where he had worked but nine days. His body was found one hundred and forty yards from the month; ho was the only person engag ed in the bank. Coroner Arthurs was summon ed, and a jury organized, which returned a ver dict of accidental death. Important Heeling. —A meeting has been cal led, by our county commissioners,of the citizens of Allegheny county, to be held at the Court House, on to-morrow afternoon, tooonsidcr the propriety of the County Commissoncrs sub scribing §lO,OOO for the erection of a House of Befugo This is an important matter, and should receive tho serious attention of our citi zens. Atprcscnt juvenilonffenders against our laws, are herded in the county jail, with the most depraved and abandoned of both sexes— and instead of punishment, proving benefioial or preventing further crime, it but serves to ini tiate them into the secrets and mysteries of the most abandoned criminals. With thoaid of uhouso of refuge, instruction mental and physical, and sachnther measures as are attached to such in stitutions, a powerful instrument of reform could be wielded, one which would have a tolling effect on the depraved youth of our city, as it has had, on those of. other, and larger cities. Death of an Irish Emigrant.—An Irish emi grant, named John Thornton, was found dead ou Wednesday evening, about 10 o’clock, in ono of tho canal boats belonging to Stitt’s Firm, ly ing at the canal basin. He had just arrived from the east; while on tho way here, —on Tues day evening—he was taken sick, and cverthing that could be done to relievo him was performed, and he grow better, apparently, but, on Tuesday evening, about 11 o’clock, bo was found dead in the boat. Thornton was a native of . Ireland, and apparently 22 or 23 years of age, and come to this city alone, in Bearch of employment.— Coroner Arthurs held on inquest over the unfor tunate man, and a verdict of . death by asthma -and exhaustion, was rendered by the jury, i Stabling Cate.—"We learned last evening that •Mr. Robert M’Clintock, the proprietor of the Bank Exchange in this city, had severely stabbed a inan in Beaver, yesterday. It .appears that Mr. M’Clintock had gone to Beaver on a pleosnro .excursion, on the .-Floating. Palace, yesterday morning, and ■while there, got Into an alterca tion with a drover, during which Mr. M’Clintqok stabbed the droververy badly, doubts are entertained as to his recovery. Mr. M’C. was lodged in tho jail of Beaver county. Child Killed. —A child about eight years of age, named Mary Olivo Cunningham, was killed last evening, between five and six o’clock, by the falling of a chimney of the Montgomery House, ia the Fifth ward, near the Canal Bridge. The child was in the hack yard at the time the chim ney fell, which mangled her in a horrible man ner. The mother of the child, boarded at the houso, which was kept by Terrence Dailey. Cor oner Arthurs held an inquest, and tho jury re turned a verdict in accordance with tho faefs. Detlruclitm of Lumber.—A considerable amount of lumber was swept away, yesterday morning, by tho rapid rise of tho Allegheny river. Seve ral valuable hoard and log rafts" lodged against the piers of tho old Allegheny Bridge, aid the upper bridges. We presume tho loss 0 will ho very heavy. Most of the lumber that has been swept off, was moored near Herr’s Island, a short-distance .above Allegheny city. Theatre.— Mr. Jamießon appears this evening as Grandfather Whitehead, in the beautiful do snestio drama of that name. Tho drama of the Artißt’s Wife, in which Mr. Jamieson and Mrs. Wheeler appear, conoludes the entertainment. This is a good bill, and one which should bo wit nessed by a crowded house. A groat bill is an nounced for Mr. Jamieson’s bonofit, on Saturday evening. The Pittsburgh arrived in good time, on Thurs day evening, from Cincinnati, bringing up o, good cargo of freight, 174 cabin passengers, TO deok passengers, and 8 horses. She leaves this morning, at 11 o’olock. Capt. Kotmtz is one of the most accommodating officers on the river, and his boat, for speed aud comfort, is proverbial. . A Mi>mce.~ Whoever basthe bravery to shoot a dog, under the “ dog ordinance,” should pos sess an amount of common sense, necessary to remove the animal, after .he was dead, and not let'tho animal remain in the street, as m the case, in several parts of the city-on Elm, near the Fourth street road. The Ben Campbell arrived in; St. Louis on the letinst. The SL Louis papers speak in high terms of her machinery, build, and finish, ®he Campbell is named after an eminent merchant of Galena, and is designed to run between that place and St. Paul, Minnesota.
