On the first day, the election for Modcrntor Was hold,; which resulted in the choice of Bev/JAs. . Brows, ofiMadison, la. The ynrioiis committees wore appointed by the Mod erator. Among the papers presented, was ono ln reference to a union between the ABaoci&te (Se oeder,) Associate Beformed (Union,) and Reform ed (Covenanter,). Presbyterian- chnrches. A convention of these different denominations was held in- Allegheny City, andresolutions were adopted laying down a plan of onion. . On the second day, several-papers were pro sented—one asking for a removal of the Theolo gical Seminary to a rural district. Dr. Cooper was appointed to preach on the “ Signs, of the Times,” on Sabbath evening next. - Dr. Bovridge on ■‘Ghurch Government," on Tuesday evening, and Bev. -Mr. Wlshart, on the “Unity of the Church," on Thursday evening. On the third day, several legacies to the Sy nod, amounting to $Tj3OO were announced.— Many. reports and memorials wore presented. The report of a select committee, on a plan of systematic contribution waß taken up and adopt ed as a whole; unanimously: The third section proposes to apportion the amount of funds need ed each year among the several presbyteries and congregations. • .v : ■ ■ An election of the members of the Board of Managers of the Theological Seminary was gone into, and Rev. Dr, McElwee, Rev.T. A. Hufchi son, and Bev. S. T. Herron, were eleoted. The report of the committee on the Babjectef removing the Theological Seminary to Xenia, Ohloywas postponed until next year. On.the fourth day, the reading of reports was, continued. Many reports from the Presbyte ries were presented, for and against the union, of the different branches of the cliureh. A re port from the Union Convention, held in Alle gheny City, on the 12th- May, was presented; also a. proposition, containing a plan or the Union proposed- Several gentlemen made re marks on tho proposed measuro, and on motion a committee of six was appointed, consisting of Rev. Messrs. Wallace, Cooper, Boyd, Scroggs, and Elders Strange and Monroe, to whom was referred the proposition of the union nnd the papers connected with it. On the fifth day, (yesterday,) sovornl new members appeared and took their seats. The Committee on Funds reported, and re commended that the legacy of Alice Tanner be left, to the - disposal of the Synod. Various other reports were presented. The morning was mostly occupied with the : consideration of the appeal - from the- majority of Chartiers congregation, but it was not con cluded when the Synod adjourned. In the afternoon; tho Synod proceeded to tho consideration of the order of tho day—the ro port of tho Special Committee, to whom was re ferred the basis of the union, proposed, by the Union Convention, which met in Allegheny City on the 12th May. The Committee, in their re port, recommend, the adoption of the basis as proposed by the Convention. On the question of the adoption of the report; a spirited debate arose, whioh was participated Infay Bev. Messrs. Blair, Beverage, Anderson, Easton, Inglcss, Banks, Rodgers, Mcllwainoand Wilson,-but was not concluded when the hour of adjournment arrived. • ■ The meetings of tho Synod are largely attend ed. There wore present yesterday, besides tho spectators, ninety ministers and fifty-one elders. -Ben Campbell. —Tho following ore tho dimen sions of this steamer, which- we noticed a few dayssineeas intended for the Galena and St. Paul, (Minnesota! trade:. "Length on deck, 200 feet; beam,-29.1 feet; hold, 5 feet; the hull was built by Porter & Co., of Shonsetown; tho en gines were bailt by Messrs. Worden & Lee; her cylinders are 18 J inohoßin diameter, with C feet stroke: she has three boilers, 40 inches iu diam eter; 24 feet long: she is also furnished with a “doctor," fire engine, hose, and all the necessa ry accompaniments:, her wheela are 20 feet iu diameter,: with 10 feet buckets. A splendid set of colors has been presented to her by Mr. Camp bell, after whom she is named. -Fined,—Our merchants had better look to their side walks more carefully than heretofore. One of our prominent Wood street merchants was fined on Monday, by his honor, the Moyor, for obstructing the pavement, by occupying more room with bin goods than the law allows. This wo think is a good move and should he carried out; The streets, particularly such ns Wood street, are obstructed by the numerous vehicles passing, anti tho pavements should be kept free for the nse of foot pasßangera. Many of onr merchants leave their bales and boxes to obstruct the pavements for an unreasonable length of time. ■ - Mysterious. —A female infant was found buried in Denny’s pasture field, in Pitt township, near this city, by two boys, about six o’clock on Mon day ovening. Coronor Arthurs was called for, when he summoned a jury and held an inquest on the body; tho jurors made. up their minds that tbo deceased came to her death from some cease unknown to them. There were no marks of violence on tbo.body. Tho body of .the child was placed in a rough wooden -box and interred, in the ground, about a foot from, tho surface, near apath that leads up the hill; the child was well dressed, and apparently three or four days: old. 'Mattering.— The testimonial that Miss Daven port received on Monday evening, of the man ner, in which sho is esteemed by our theatre going citizens, was very flattering.. The house was crowded uncomfortably fall, and the bene ficiary received with the atmost enthusiasm. The beautiful play of. Ligomar was presented to a Pittsburgh andicnce-for the first time; it was put upon . the stage in a splendid manner and eliolted much well deserved prniso; Alderman Tarlnnson had quite a number of assault and battery cases before him yesterday. Philip Weaver made a complaint against Adam Anson for that offence. A disturbance origina ted in flraiF St Lindsay's mill,- which resulted in the suit. , -Anson was held to bail. ■ Hugh Stewart was arrested: and held to bail, charged .with an assault on James Houston. 1 > 'A telegraphic detfalch notified the Mayor, yes terday, that another of the persons who commit ' ted the robbery near a short time since, was in this oity. Tlio General Presbyterian Assembly mot to day, it being tho fourth day of the session, Af ter some preliminary exorcises, a resolution of thanks was moved by the Hon, Sir. Haskell, to tho Rt. Rev, Albert Barnes, for bis sermou be fore the_ Assembly, and requesting a copy for publication. -.This led-to a-.spirited debate, Drs. Wisner and Beman, and the Rev. Mr. Pollock,- objecting to its printing as being unprecedented, and the sermon containing views ami expressions to which the Assembly did not deßire to be com mitted.. The Bov. Br. Braitb, Rev. Mr. Hawloy, Rev. Sir,, Woodruff, and others, advocated the publication as due to the.learned author, nnd ns a remarkably clear and satisfactory expression of true Presbyterian doctrine. Tho resolution was finally indefinitely post poned, with the understanding that tho sermon is to,bo printed unofficially. Tho addresses of the corresponding bodies were received, vie Rev. Mr. Ames, representing Connecticut; Rev. Mr. Carpenter, Massachu setts; Rev. -Mr, Wallace, New Hampshire; Rev. A. 11. Clapp, Vermont; Rev. Mr, Blake, Maine; Rev. Mr. Miles, Wisconsin; and Rev. Mr.-Dog gett, New York. These addresses were frater nal, and were handsomely responded to by the Moderator, who alluded with great force to the ancient relations of -these several ecclesiastical bodies, and reciprocated nil tho kind expressions uttered. Tlio Rev. Dr. Bemau introduced a resolution that the Assembly procure a block of marble for tho Washington monument, to bear this inscrip tion: “Tho General Assembly of tho Presby terian Church in the United Statos met at Wash ington, 1852;” and that each member of i the Assembly give one dollar for the purpose. The resolution elicited some remarks and was passed, the ?e.v. Mr. Ecbard, Jacob Gideon nnd Carter Brandon, Esq., being, appointed a committee to carry it into effect The election of delegates to Foreign bodies took place in the afternoon, the Rev. Dr. Hat field being choßen for the General Association of Connecticut; Rev. Dr. Campbell to Massachu setts; Rev. A. A. Smith, Now Hampshire; Rev. Silas Hawley, Maine. The report of the Church extension was then taken up, and tho Rev. Mr. Stillman, of Buffalo, moved tbo adoption of tho first section, relating to the education of the ministers. It requires each Presbytery to present the subject to all their oburolies, and obtain an annual contribu tion to find out and sustain suitablo young men for education, each Prcßbytcry to have a stand ing committee, to be responsible to a standing committee of the General Assembly. This com mittee shall employ a salaried Secretary to at tond to this work; each Presbytery to apply its contributions to its own candidates, and pay over tho surplus to the Secretary of tho Assem bly commitleo ; tho different Theological Semi naries to be requested to send up annual reports to the assembly. The Rev. hlr. Mills defended the report- at great length, against tho objections arising from fear that it would produce tho collisions with other bodies, or that it is sectarian. Tho Rev. Mr. Hotcbkio desired to know how tho proposed plan differed from an Ecclesiastical board. . The Rev. Mr. Noyes wished to know whether it was tho design to re-invigorato the existing system or to substitute a new one, Dr. Dutfiold and others sustained the report ; pending the discussion the Assembly ailjournod. In tho House of-Delegates to-day, the bill to allow the Baltimore and Philadelphia Railroad Company to bridge the Susquehanna River was referred to the Legislature at its next session. The biU to incorporate tho Baltimore and Phi ladelphin. Railroad Company, via .Westchester, and the bill to take the senßO of tho people of the State in reference to prohibiting tho sale of li quor were both passed by the House of Delegates to-day. Tho first branch of the city councils have pas sed a bill to loan $1,000,500 of city bonds to tho Virginia and North Western Railroad Company. This evening, on tho Fitobburg Railroad, at Waverly,'; Wm. .Bawyer, an eminent lawyer of Chariestown, with bis wife anti three daughters, were run over by the down train,: which was run ning at the rate of 40 miles an hour. They woro in a carringe, the driver of which attempt ed to cross the traok as the train was coming down. The carriage was demolished, and: Mr. Sawyer was instantly killed. His eldest daugh ter and the: driver'are probably fatally injured. Mrs. Sawyer’s skuH:was so badty , fractured that her brains protruded from the wound.
