Gov. KoSsuth - said he was not surprised that the students of so respectable an institution shouldthke - ench an interest in his cause ; when the struggle took place in Germany, the students were the first to fly to arms, and the only diffi culties was the want of the materials of war to put in their hands. The same spirit had perva ded the students of other parts of Europe, but they soon learned not to put their trust in kings, who, when in trouble, always swore to do what was necessary, but disregarded their oaths as soon as the difficulties were at an end. A Committee from Hollidaysburg, invited Kos suth to visit that place on his way to Pittsburgh, but he was compelled to decline. Mr.. Galbraith, on behalf of the people of the counties of Northumberland, Union and Mon tour, presented an address and invited Kossuth to meet the people of those counties at Danville. He went strong for " hands off and fair play," and said that the Iron mountains, if need be, would furnish the arms to strike a blow. Each member of the committee, thirty in num• ber, presented one dollar. Kossuth said, it was the common experience of all the world, that in the mountains the spirit of freedom was pure and fresh like the air itself, by the small individual contribution, they had registered their names in that large body of the citizens of the United States—which was to give weight - to diplomacy. Kossuth declined the in vitation. A letter was read, from Pittsburgh, from the workmen in one of the foundries. Every one of them subscribing a weeks wages to the cause of Hungary, amounting in all to $250. Rev. Mr. Messick, on behalf of the clergy men of Harrisburg, presented an address to Kossuth, full of sympathy and hope for his cause. Kossuth, in reply, spoke of the toleration af forded by Turkey to the protestant religion. In the 15th century, in some parts of Hungary, while in other parts under the dominion of Aus tria, protestant clergymen were daily, by hun dreds, transported to the galleys of Naples, where they died in their chains. Mr. Weidman, on behalf of the Agriculturists of Lebanon county, addressed Kossuth. He said the nature of their pursuits did not permit the cultivation of the art of Oratory, but if they could not speak, they could nevertheless feel, and would do their part in assisting Hungary in its struggle. Kossuth, in reply, said, that it was not the truest eloquence which was loudest ; there was nothing more eloquent than nature, and yet na ture was silent except when the thunder and the hurricane announced there was a trod above. Ile looked with a deeper interest for the expres sion of the sentiments of that class than any other ; when they spoke, it would be as the word of nature, spoken in the thunder above and the hurricane on earth. A delegation of the press next called upon Kossuth. Mr. McKinley presented an address which was responded to in an appropriate and effective manner. The ladies of Harrisburg assembled to receive an address from Kossuth, and presented him with a beautifully executed purse, containing their contributions. Dr. Dewitt presented au address on their behalf. Kossuth made an appropriate reply, saying he did not expect to meet so large a number, else he would have made some little preparations to speak to them. Ile said that as the people, in its corporate capacity, was the first to embody in a political shape their resolutions of sympathy, so the ladies of Harrisburg were the first to form a Ladies Association to support the cause of Hungary. They had the hearts of men in their hands--the perseverance of the strongest man could not accomplish in a year. what the tender hearts of ladies could do in au hour, as he had experienced in his own country. In accepting the gift, he said, taking up the purse, " this fur Hungary; and this," holding up the purse. " is for my children." (Laughter) He hanged the purse to Madame Kosenth. xxxii covatutss -FIRST Skl'iSlON //ouze.—Mr. Sibley introduced a bill giving to the several States the proceeds of certain lands, for the support of indigent insane. Tito House then went into Committee of the Whole, and the bill explanatory of the bounty land act of 1&50, was then taken up. Mr. Tuck opposed it as unnecessary. Mr. Dunham moved an amendment making land warrants assignable under certain rules. Mr. Mallory resumed his remarks on the sub ject of flogging in the navy ; be was opposed to its abolition. Mr. Hale supported with zeal the abolition of dogging. The subject was then postponed for one week, and after a short executive session, The Senate adjourned. GOV. BOUFWELL'S MESSAGE. Boston, Jan. 14. The annual message of boy. Boutwell was sent to the Legislature to-doy. in regard to Koss'uth, he takes strong ground, and is not only in favor of welcoming him to Massachusetts as adistinguished exile, but adds that the common sentiment of the American people is on the side of the constitution and gov ernment. But this sentiment will not be satis fied with au individual and unofficial expression of its will; it will also demand, through the diplo maticagent of the country, a distinct declaration ou the part of the governments ot Austria and Russia, us to their future purposes. If these governments should assert the right of inter fering in the domestic affairs of other European nations, or shall decline to make any distinct declaration upon this point,, it would seem prop er for this government to give them- notice that we assert, on our part, an, equal - right to inter fere-in favor of republics= or constitutional gov ernMents„ reserving the . power to judge of the necessity ofinterferance, as events transpire. We cannot-qnietly:submit to the absorption of small states-by. larger_ and final subjection of all to two or threntoectdeapotisma. Such a move ment will not only be fatal to our commerce, but to general indtiltry and free priciples of America. The Eldorado was delayed at Chagres two days, by the non-arrival of the. Panama, at. Pa nama, which vessel was obliged to bear the steamer Republic company, from Acapulco to Panama; the Republic having been in a crippled state for the last four days. The Eldorado has experienced heavy gales from north-west, through which she has proved a first rate sea vessel. She left at Chagres, steamer Union, from New York, via nunaica, to sail next day, also U. 8.. sloop of war Albany, Capt. Platt, which arrived January 2d, from St. Domingo. She was waiting orders—all well. The Eldorado brings 211 passengers, and one day's later news from San Francisco, but the papers at hand furnish nothing of spatial im portance. ARRIVAL OF THE STEAMER UNION. New York, Jan. 16. The steamer Union, arrived here to-day. She brings Panama papers to the 2d inst. All was quiet at Chagres when the Union left. The British war steamer Dover, arrived at Panama on the 28th December, on her way to England, from California. The Panama Journals estimates that there were 3000 passengers in that city, during the week previous. The papers contain nothing la ter from Chili. The Alta Californian of December 16th, re ceived by this steamer, gives the following statement of gold by the Panama,—to New York, $1,681,756; to London, $149,000; to New Orleans, $36,244; total, $1,267,000. Three of 'the persons concerned in shooting Sheriff Bigelow, have been arrested and confin ed at Marysville. The Neveda Journal recommends the division of waters south of Yuba river, so as to cause them to flow through the gold diggins of that great mining town. A plan is proposed for the construction of a solid acqueduct sufficiently capacious to carry the main body of that stream. It is estimated that the cost of the work will be $3,000,000. The Senora Herald is of opinion that the min ers generally, in the vicinity of Union Creek, are doing well. In Woods Creek, mining is also very prosperous. The steamer Constitution was to leave San Francisco on 23d December, for Sandwich Is lands. She is intended as a regular packet be tween the two countries. Price Current: Wocm —as near as can be estimated, there have been about 500,000 fbs of domestic Woul of all descriptions sold us this market dining the past year. About the first of June, pricer ruled high, averaging for washed 37c and for unwashed one-third less; after that titre the market fell down to 30c, since when, however, it has been steadily improving.
