The furnace being prepared, toe Safe was placed inside thereof, with books, papers and some money; when the doorof the Safe was closed and tbe fire kindled at a: quarter post 2 o’clock, and in a short time tbe Safe was red hot, and eoutinued till half past 6 o’clock, being about four and a half hours, when the . committee expressed their satisfaction that the time occupied with suca heat was sufficient/ The furnace was then pulled down, Safe cooled, and door opened—the books, papers and money safe- Tbe heat was so great as to melt off the brass mountings.
