SefeUng oftht Board of managers of tbe
Allegheny County Agricultural. .So
cle.tyi;--
The' Eoard of managers met on Saturday,
morning,’in the New Court House.
Messrs. Murdoch;-Martin; I’oung,* Cooper, Boyd
and Miller. •
John Murdoch; Jr.y of Peebleß; was called to
the chair,' in the absence of the regular Presi
dent, 'V ■ ,
Mr; Martin read a report, stating that he had
received from the bounty Commisaioners the
Bum of one hundred dollars,, as directed .io be.
given to' the Society by Act of Assembly. A
certiddate’bfitE depoeite with Gen. WilliamLari
merywasbandedtotheCbairman.
Copies of .a cocrespondence between Mr. Wil
lisjn Mariin of- llanchester, and John Beyholda
of Newcastle, Lawrence county, wore read. Mr.
Reynolds, on. behalf of an Agricultural . society
ciety, anuidpifa Gmstitudonahdßye
Lairs; - which 1 were fbrniihed*' by ’ Mr.' Martin.’
Theoorrespondence was ordered to be filed.
lie following letter from Mr. Martin, to whom
had beei awarded the first preminm for the best
half acre of-growing turnips, wa3 read ;
. • MaschestbA, Sov. 17, 1851. .
• Gentlemen —Having given you due notice, that
I intended to compete for the t>rite you offered,
in your circulars, for the best half acre of grow
ing turnips, X have measured off a piece of
grbundy one hundred yards long, l>y ' thirty-five
yardsin width,.making ,3570 square yards,, on
which I had. three hundred and thirty eight bush
els.-of goodeotmd turnips, and at that* rate, one
acre,'cdhsisiing' of 4,§40 square yards, would
produce .-four hundred, andfifty-eightbushel,
thus one'acre would prodflde. and has produced,
two huiidred iuid twenty-nme 'bushels, of good
sound turnips.
Although setae of your Board have seen said
tumipßj' whUe.gcdwmg, it may not he out of
place to describe the nature of the soil and sub
soil-on which they were produced, together with
the thhnn'er of cultivaiton, &c.
Thß.'sbil .iftoliiefly, sand, * with a cold, yellow
sand, mixed with gravel;, as a snb-soil. In the
spring. of. ,1850, this ground was Ifgh tly jtnanored
with yard .manure in the drill, and sown with
peas. -,ln - the spring of 1851,;. if was again
shyAify mandred in the drill for potatoes, whioh
were dag for market, in Jnly lost The ground
was then ploughed up Veagiy, and drawn, off in
drills,about two £eet wlde--then harrowed down
with a; common two-horse harrow, which par
tially levelled down the drills, and caused the
clods to fall into the hollow* between the drills,
makihglhe top smooth and fine. Then the seed
was sown pretty * thickly, on the top. After it
was well np, the ground between the drills was
cleaihsedl with .a .common cultivator, or drill har
row,* hnfthnplants were not meddled with, un
fil they * were. kbout thi.ee , inches high. Then
they'were thinned oat, to .about six inches apart
in the rows, with* a narrow, hoe, not allowing
them tu be touched by the fingers at all.
SomeSmay think this a troublesome way of
raising -turnips, but it is the only manner in
which ever raise any thing like a good
crop. .These facts I lay before yon,
And remain, gentlemen,
. Yours, Bespectfully,
V; ■ far&XAJi Mabtih.
After spino discussion, it was resolved that tbe
silver cup, awarded to Robert J. Boyle, of Indi
ana township, should be presented iohim onthe
first Ta.esdby ::in:,' jannary, by Wto .Martin, of
Manchester,, at-'Weaver's Hotel.

The attendance of the Demoaratio caucus Inst
night indicated a strong commencement of the
session to-morrow, and a protracted struggle for
the officers of the House; There was little har
mony, and a large number of members left the
eancus before the nominations were made, de
clining to take part in them. The difficulty
took place in the early part of'the meeting, on
account of a portion of the members desiring
to make the Compromise a basis for the final
Settlement of the slavery question and a party
platform, to which a majority refused to accede.
The nominations were 9trongly opposed by many
of those present.
Washtsoton, Deo. 1.

votes—all others 79. Forney was thereupon
declared elected. - .

Senators were present except Messrs. Bradbury,
Hunter, Stockton, Mongum, Badger, Butler,
Rhett, Jefferson Davis, Soule, Downes;. Bell,
Jones of Tenn., Douglass, Borland, Sebastian,

members were then presented by various Sena
tors, and the oaths prescribed by. the Constitu
tion administered. The certificate of the. Gov
ernor of Florida of the election of Stephen R.
Mallory as Senator from the 4th of March, was
presented by Mr. Webster. He also presented
a copy of the journal of the Legislature of Flor
ida, with a record of certain proceedings, whiah
was considered by Hon. D. L. Tales as evidence
of his having been elected.
The two papers having been'read, the Chair
said it was a question for the Senate tq decide
upon, whether the papers entitled either of
them to a seat
Mr. Bright moved a reference of the papers
to a select committee, on which considerable de
bate ensued, in which Clay, Foote and others
took part.
Finally Mr. Bright withdrew his motion, and
Mr. Mallory was admitted to his seat Subse
quently the papers were referred to a committee,
to be selected to-morrow.
