If she be often sinning, is she not too .. • often sinned against? Women are not angels. Birds may be, but . wives surely are not. But there are few who ilenythem the power and the depth of a deep, fielt•suic' icing affection. The true wife finds Iter highest earthly happiness in promoting that of her husband. Home is to here sacred place —the Sianotnary of all the domestic affections, of - all the social sympathies, of all the kindly char • ities; and no labor or care is beneath the wife ; .....all, however mean or trivial, is hallowed, eleva ted, purified, by this deep, prevailing principle. Under this influence of love, each meal becomes 'a sacramental feast—a communion of kindred • soula. Nothing is degrading, nothing is mean, which is to make the home of her husband and • children-cheerful, attractive, a refuge from toil and vexatian. But if these efforts are met by harshnessand _indifference on the side of the ,husband;•if affection is repelled by neglect or unkindness, the very sensitiveness of her nature' leads her to resent the ungracious return. While it is doubtless-the duty of the wife in bear cheerfully the trials the husband may im. while _ pose; il meek and quiet spirit will ever be confessed her highest ornament, we may well doubt the wisdom, and question the magnanimi ty' which affords a very frequent occasion for the - exercise of ,tho, grace ao much extolled. And • Wellmay it bo for tho husband to remember that his clouded brow, his irritable spirit, his harsh -:7.temper, may overshadow his family, destroy the happiness of his wife, and ruin the character of ~ his children. There are therm who spend their lives in toil, accumulating what they never take an hour to enjoy. Such never seek home to en joya Sabbath hour of rest and social communion, but they come to it as a spot. in which they may fling off all the restraints of decorum and indulge freely in all their petulance and ill temper.— _ Vona out with care and labor, heavy, sullen, they sink into their seats by the fireside, or take - their places at the table, without one kindly *ord or *cried smile. ;,.Woe! woe! to those households to which the husband and the father returns, not like the pa triarch of - old, to bless, but to which his pres ence brings a Curse. When the sound of the • corning footsteps of the husband falls like lead • on the heart of the wife: when his entrance charms the light from her eye, the smile from • . her lips ; when the voice of childish glee is hush . The boat made slow headway, the en gines being now and of coarse working stiff. When we reached Wellsville, owing to the thick ness of the fog, we were compelled to lie up until the next morning. On Wednesday, we moved down to Steubenville in fine style, and stopped long enough at that enterprising and flourishing place to allow the citizens time to come aboard and feast their eyes on the splendor of this magnificent steamer. I embraced the opportu nity afforded while waiting at Steubenville to visit the Railroad office, and was rejoiced to, learn.from the efficieritPresldent, the Ron. Dart. rex. &wean, that the shanties are erected on semel3o - miles of. the . - Road, and the work is about being commenced. After bidding good bye to Stenberiville;in a short -time we "round- ed to," (i believed that is the river lingo,) at the great town of Wheeling, tzlitsoe not unknown to fame. The chimneys of s#lo Pittsburgh passed under the Wheeling bridge...with all ease, with out being lowered, and tilde Were some ten feet space to spare. The ' Wheeling folks gathered in great numbers to see the kind of boats we tun; out at the "headof navigation." They gazed upon the " Pittsburgh " with silent wonder and admiration! After leaving Wheeling, nothing of importance occurred on Wednesday. We passed an ever lasting number of coal boats; In fact the whole river is a moving panorama of "black dia monds" from Pittsburgh to the spot where I am writing. Mr. Bravo, an old coal merchant, with whom I have been conversing to-night, in fertile me that there are about 160 pair' or 300 boats now afloat, laden with Pittsburgh coal. -He estimates the proceeds of this coal' lit -direr hundred and fifty thousand dollars: This will certainly be a snug little sum of money to bring Into circulation amongst our citizens. Those coal men have a. hard life, certainly, but yet they appear to enjoy themselves very much sometimes. The picture of the " Jolly Boat man," which may be seen in the print shop windows, will give you an idea of some of the brighter scenes in a boatman's life. This day we passed the new and highly pros perous town of 'lronton, in Lawrence county, Ohio. It presence a delightful appearance from the river, and everything about it looks fresh, healthy, prosperous and beautifuL /t is destined I predict, to become one of the most import ant manufacturing towns on the Ohio river south of Wheeling. The business, houses, ho tels, dwellings, &c., are erected in real city style. A little farther down is Hanging Rook, another celebrated place for manufacturing iron. There have been several fortunes made at this place in the iron business during the last few years, albeit some folks will talk about " ruin !" Portsmouth is decidedly the handsomest town I have seen on the river since leaving Pittsburgh. It presents quite a city appearance, and I am told it is increasing rapidly in population. It has some 7000 inhabitants, and supports two daily newspapers. It is beautifully located at the mouth of the Scioto river, and here also terminates the great Ohio Canal, which connects the waters of Lake Erie with those of the Ohio river. The Sandusky City and Mansfield Rail road, which was recently extended to Mt. Ver non and Newark, is to be carried to Portsmouth shortly—so I am informed. I would write more, but the shaking of the boat makes it rather an unpleasant task, and I presume you will have-aome difficulty In deci phering my biroglyphics. A large and enthusiastic meeting to consider the propriety of petitioning the President to in terfere with the British government to obtain the release of Swirl% O'Bures, Mircitatt, and their compatriots in exile, was hold at Buffalo last Monday evening. The Mayor of the city presided. A committee was appointed on the subject, and resolutions passed favoring the ob ject of the meeting. Professor Kiszet. was in troduced, and enthusiastically cheered by the meeting. He made a short speech, which is thus noticed in the Courier: "Dr. Kinkel addressed the meeting in a neat and spirited manner in behalf of freedom gener ally. He does not speak English fluently, but succeeded In making himself understood In a very forcible and effective speech. His remarks to the Irish cid:ens were so fa of sympathy and so neatly expressed as to eall down thunders of applause. We was one short year ago con fined in a dungeon in Germany, and while there news came to him that the people of this coun try were making efforts for his release. It did his heart good to receive such news, and lighten, ed the burdens of his captivity and the darkness of his dungeon. He encouraged them to go forward then, with the assurance that their efforts would gladden the hearts of the exiles Ohio Commie. According to the late census, Ohio coutaion a population of 1,1180,408, divided as follows: White males.. White females Total whites... Colored males... Colored females. Total colored There are in the State 336,098 dwelling hous es; 348,628 families ; 193,887 farms, and 10,650 manufacturing establishments, producing an nually $6OO and upwards. THE PITTIMITEGH.—From the notices that have appeared In the Cincinnati papers, we in• fer that the first visit of this floating palace was considered an " event," and not the least among the items of that event, the arrival of some of the members of the Pittsburgh Press. The Enquirer thus welcomes the arrival of our es teemed senior: We yesterday had the pleasure of taking by the band our old friend and efficient co-laborer L. HAILPII24 Esq., the spirited and talented edi tor of the Pittsburgh Post, who is making a flying visit along the Ohio in the new and ele gant steamer Pittsburgh, which challenges ad miration among all our river men." The Commercial gives the Captain of the Jour nwl, the following notice Capt. Ev.tto, the giant of the Pittsburgh Com mercial Journal, took a peep at Cincinnati, yes terday, and then strnok out for Louisville. We will await his "Impressions." His pen is as formidable as the club of Hercules. stir The Cincinnati Enquirer does not read the Commercial Journal, or it never would have published the following. We received from our ootemporary a very severe reprimand for a much smaller offence : Madame Anna Bishop. The advertisement of Bocasn, Manager of Madame ANNA Bosnor's Concerts, announced that the Madame "having been invited to take a final leave of the city," would give her last concert on Friday (last) evening. The annouce ment was a singular one, but we cannot say it was altogether out of. place. It might not have been true in fact, though strictly so in spirit. It is very generally admitted, we believe, that she made perfect failures in many of her efforts, especially in her English songs, The truth is, we have had singing lately that " is singing," and by which we can more easily discover de fects in other efforts of that kind. By that com parison, we should put Madame BIBEIOP down as a third rate vocalist. She has a fine flexible voice and has a fair command of it, but she is fully three degrees below JaNNY LIND, in every quality that goes to make a charming songstress. Madame BISHOP Will do to sing whereJsrunr's notes have never been heard; or where the Nightingale has not been heard for a long time. To such places we would recommend her to go, and to the inhabitants of such places we would freely say go and hear her. ger The National Inteligencer says that "The Capitol resounds with the hammer and the saw, and shows signs everywhere, in its halls and lob bies, of busy preparation for the coming Con gressional campaign." The hammer and saw of the Democracy havealso been busy in the different portions of the Union; for the same campaign. We hardly think more havoc has been made with the Capitol, than has Democracy with the Whig party. The Capitol, old as it is, could not have needed pulling to pieces, more than the party which has now hardly a resting place this side of the head waters of , the Saline river. So Bays the'/N. Y.
