The 'writer is mistaken in one point—where he says that neither of the distinguished men named in his communication (Mr.- BUCHANAII being among the number,) could "command the whole North- I em vote, nor a plurality amounting to half of it." Either of the distinguished men named in the Register would command, not only more than half the Democratic vote a this State ; but, if nominated by the Democratic General Conven tion, would receive almost the entire vote of the party. We believe, indeed, that the loyalty of our friends to their principles is so great, that I the Democratic nominee will receive every Dem ocratic vote. We sustain Mr. BUCITANAN before all others, as an honor to his State and his coun try ; and believe that very few, if any, profess ing Democrats of Pennsylvania would withhold their support from him, if nominated. That this will be the case, every day's observation more thoroughly convinces us. It is not necessary for many such powerful arguments as this to be presented to the American People, in order to insure the election of Pennsylvania's greatest statesman, by an overwhelming majority : "Each has his warm friends, and I am free to say, for myself, that I think the rights of the South would be in no danger under the admin istration of either of them. But It is safe to assume that no one of them can command the whole Northern vote, nor a plurality amounting to ballot it. * * ■ * Upon whom should the selection fall is the next question. I express no opinion for the North, but fortheSouth. And It is so obvious to my mind that Jsirss BUCHANAN should bo the man, that I cannot believe there would be the least hesitation on the part of Southern dele gates to concentrate upon him. In his advocacy of the just rights of the South under the Con stitution, in his early opposition to the slavery agitation, in Congress, dating back seventeen years, he is placed so far in advance of any and all other Northern candidates, that there can be no room for hesitation that our delegates would unite on Mr. Buchanan. His opinions and prin ciples are not put on for the nonce ; there is nothing of President -seeking in them. They have been held so long, maintained so Inflexibly, and expressed so independently, at all times and under all circumstances, as to put at rest every suspicion of that sort. * * • eve ry suspicion •* * * But if there were any question of the expedi ency of selecting Mr. Buchanan, prior to the late Pennsylvania election, the brillianttermina tion of that contest, under the peculiar circum stances attending it, must have dispelled all doubt. In no Northern State have the lines been so clearly drawn upon the question of a faithful enforcement of the compromise melts.; ures and an unflinching opposition to the further progress of abolition. The democratic presses and speakers, up to the opening of the polls, resounded with appeals to the people to come to the rescue, and pronounce a last and final con demnation of the abolition principles of Goy. Johnston and his supporters. • * • * * * * s * fr Pennsylvania's response to the patriotic ap peals of her favorite son and the democratic press, is before the country, and Messrs. Editors shall not forget the thrill of joy which I felt at its announcement. And now I ask is it not due to that gallant State.—is it not due to ourselves, to extend to her a greeting and a congratulation upon the late glorious triumph, that shall bo worthy of her and of ourselves! No non-slave holding State has ever uttered so unequivocal is determination to stand by us as an auxiliary in the maintaMance of our just rights. Let us not slight so warm and fraternal a demonstra tion. But let the Southern democracy tender to Pennsylvania the highest compliment we can pay,—the nomination of her favorite son to the highest office in the nation's gift. It is demand ed by justice—it is no less demanded by interest and our love of the Union. * * ILLINOIS MANKIND LAW DESIMATED-AVe learn from the St. Louis papers of the 15th that, eon trat7 to all expectations, the Illinois Banking Law has been defeated. The St. Louis huelli- yencer says: We have just received by the O'Reilly tele graph, and otherwise, some Bank returns from the southern counties of Illinois, and these look, we regret to say, ominous of the defeat of the bill. The aggregate of these sixteen counties is 8,461 against the law. The Union says that after summing up the returns of sixty-throe counties, there appears to be a majority of 4,363 against the Law. We believe there are ninety-eight counties in the State of Illinois, and from the fact that the majority of those counties yet to be heard from are thoroughly democratic, there can scarcely be a doubt about the defeat of the " General Bank ing Law." If this news is true, we will feel proud of the Democracy of Illinois. They will have preserv- C 4 their purity, and crushed one of the boldest schemes to plunder them that has over been concocted by any money gamblors. Be fore we left the Sink, we cooked our last provis ions, consisting of some beans. We reserved a few spoonfuls of rice. We 'had. ali • the beans boiled, as we could not have any fire or water on the desert; and When - we stopPed to est, they were sour. I was forced by hunger to eat some, and they made me so 11l that' I thought every moment I would have.to.give up and lie down on the sand, and let the rest go on. However, I managed to drag-my weary, sick. and enfeebled body on, step by step. We had joined some men from Ohio, who had-a wagon drawn by mules. We had gathered some grass and put it in their wagon, for our little mare to eat on the desert. When within sir miles of the Carson river, the mules gave out, for want of water, and Uncle Bennet and three ()there stxrted with a keg and canteens, to get water from the river for them ; leaving myself and another man with the mules and wagon. I waited Some time, and then, finding my strength failing and myself growing weaker every moment, 1 started on alone, to find the river or .a death on the sandy, burning des ert. We had now been all night and part of the day on the desert, for there was no place to camp. It was nearly noon, and the rays of the sun were burning hot, beating down on our heads, and reflected by the sand. We had met with a spring, but the water was salt. I had at last got within about two miles of the river, and was nearly exhausted, when I saw a man, cov ered with a blanket, lying by the road sjde, ex posed to the burning sun. I could not walk ; my tongue was almost cleaving to my month for thirst, and being unable to aid him, I passed on. Whether he had lain down to rest, or die, Itnow not. Perhaps, alone and uncared for, he had died thus. 1 could not lift the blanket which was over him, spread, perhaps, by some pitying hand,—or, perhaps, drawn around him by his own dying hand, to see if he were alive or dead. I could not do anything for him; an hour more and I would be in a like condition ; so 1 dragged myself ou, and soon met with two men, who called me to come to them and they would give me a drink. They gave me about a pint of am ter—precions drops, yet it seemed as if it would take a gallon to quench my eager thirst. But the water wet my parched lips and dry tongue. These kind men were carrying water in buck ets, along the way, to give to the fainting trav elers that were often found lying on the hot sand, and who hail to bo carried to the river. 1 was told by those who crossed the dreadful desert after one, that they were obliged to leave the road for the smell of the dead cattle on it; and that if their dead bodies had been piled on either side of the road, there were enough to line it clear through the desert. Wagons,' too, were standing sometimes with the whole train lying dead in the harness; perhaps their master had fallen off, and the poor creatures had follovied, the road as long as they could, till unable to extri cate themselves from the harness, or to go on, they had laid down and perished. But to return to the history of my own adventures : I knew that the kind Samaritans would find the poor fellow on the road ; so I went on and met our three men coming with the water. They gave me another drink; this helped mo considerably. Uncle Bennett had stayed at the river to try and buy some provisions, but could not get any. The men in one cart abused him, au old man, for being in tmcb a condition ; and the others threatened to throw them into the river. I came at last In sight of the beautiful Cotton Wood trees, on the banks of the river. I had had no breakfast or dinner, and was so exhausted, worn out and weary, that I felt as if I cared little whether I lived or died ; but those green, waving trees revived me, and I felt like life once more. I reached those green, shady trees, and threw myself down. After while the rest came in. We drank some water, and bathed our heads and feet. Oh : how refreshing it was to feel the cool water around our blistered feet. The ends of my toes were nearly off ; the nails and skin loose. I bad to bathe them in every water I came to. We prepared our first meal for the day, of two spoonfuls of rice, to some warm water and a little salt. We stayed here all night, and started the next day, which was the third of July. Leaving the river behind us, we traveled through a very desert looking country. At 10 o'clock at night, we cause to Carson's Val ley, and to the river. Here we bad good grass, the country looked better, end everything was improved but ourselves and provision bag. I laid down and slept while Uncle Bennett cooked the last few grains of rice. He wakened me to est ; but I could not get up ; so he eat some, and pot mine by till morning. The next day was the 4th of July, and a splendid dinner we we had : ss we bad eat all our rice, we cooked some horsii.tlesh that we had carried all the way from the Sink of the Humboldt. Ono of the company had two horses : he shot one ; and all that wished, took of its flesh. A horse was shot this day for food. We came to the Mor mon settlement, in Carson Valley, and traded our little mare fur a few pounds of beef. I traded my tin pan, made for gold washing, and which cost me two dollars and a half at home, for a heart of beef. One poor fellow traded his other pair of pants for a pound or two of beef. We made some broth of the beef without any thing else to put into it, for the Mormons were out of flour. We traded a tin of coffee for a tin full of bits of corn bread. We went on to the mouth of the Big Kongon ; here I thought I would die tram using the beef soup. This was the first night that Uncle Bennet and I camped alone. Wo made a blazing tire, near a large log. A great many wagons had been left on the read ; we hauled one up to the fire, and got in, and passed the night there. The next morning, after breakfast, we went oe our jowl:soy, and came to a bridge. Some men here were baking some bread for their breakfast; and I was al most tempted to steal some, so ravenous was 1. We went on and came to the Sierra Nevada Mountains. The road was very rugged here. There was plenty of snow water, and a great deal of snow. Many a hard tug we had here to got up; but nothing particular occurred in crossing the mountains. There were a great many deserted wagons. We overtook some Mor mons, and bought some meat at a dollar a pound. That night we had some good corn dodgers. In the morning we came to another range of the S. N. Mountains.. There was snow all the way up. The creeks were very high, and the waters were very cold and -wife, and we had to wade i through them. There was Snow all round, and only grass in the valleys. On the mountains the snow was five or six feet deep. I felt like giving out, climbing over these cold snowy mountains. We took dinner up under a rock, on the highest part of the mountains. That night we saw some tires of the roads, and a good many people. We joined them, and camped along side of a snow bank. That was a very , cold night. I lay by the burning logs, but couldn't sleep well for the cold, as I had but ono little blanket. Next day we overtook eight or on wagons, and got some good light' bread, at Mx, bits a loaf. They said they would give us some milk ; but we would not wait. 4.t length we mine to a trading post, and got sonic pickled pork and coffee, and had a good dinner. Sometimes we met women traveling with men. We had not seen any for so long that we thought them beautiful, and the eight cheered us. We wore now within three miles of Placers• villa, and we stopped to wash our clothes and eat our last provisions. A gentleman - came by whose name was Coates--a noble, generous hearted man from Wisconsin. When he heard that we were out of money and provisions, he told us to go to his store and get what we want ed ; this we did when we entered the gold re gion, which we soon afterwards had the the old pleas ure of doing. Here we mot so m e f Dubuque Association; saw Bungan, Jordan, Scott, Buchanan and others. It was pleasant to meet our old friends whom we had traveled so far with. There was great shaking of hands and rejoicing ; and that night we had supper to gether. We were now fairly in.the long desired Land of Gold, and were much surprised in not- seeing gold dust more plentiful ; and also in finding the trial; of the 'old proverb "that all is not gold that glitters. I will nowdose; hoping that these rough sketches of the Overland 'Route, they prove in teresting. A Hann Dui AT THE GOTHANITEB. — The Bos ton Pathfinder throws a heavy brick at the New Yorkers, see if ho 40. " The Now Yorkers are in a bad way. They erect costly churches, which poor people cannot afford to enter, and thus obstruct the way to heaven by their love of show ; and now we learn that they are removing the obstructions at 'Hell Gate,' at the public expense! This latter pas sage was spoken of several hundred years ago as being wide,' but it seems to have been insuffi cient to accommodate the increasing travel from Gotham." Correspondents in, Paris predict that, if the electoral law in France be not repealed at the meeting of the Assembly, a general revolu tion will follow next May. There is a cool and-, determined spirit of resistance prevailing all classes of the republicans, from Cavaignacisls.to Communists. Moderate and temperate men say they will defend to the last the rights secured to them in the Constitution. The movement will not commence this time in the cities, but in the: country. The peasants of all the Middle, Southern and eastern provinces will put thetn , selves in movement, calli.pg to amp the work , men of the towns garxisorted by Gosiernuient.— While the largo towns Willbe in the hands of the monarchists, the country will be occupied by the republicans. This determination of the ultra Socialist republicans to fight is very general. How the question will be treated becomes there fore a matter of very general concern. gei" M r. Fl'etieriok Peel, youngest son of the late Sir Robert Peel, has been appointed to the post of under Secretary for the Colonies, a potti-' tion which, at the present juncture, is thought' to require great ability, in which tho now incum bent is said to be entirely deficient. Ho is but 28 years of age, and represents the horugh of Ttunworth, for which his father hid been member so many years before his death. Young Peel is a radical in his political principles; and was con sequently opposed to his father in politics for some time preceding the latter's decease.
