Democratic Genera! Convention ... - ......... , This important subject has for some men,lS been c laiming a largeshare of the public atter!, , iron, , --especially since the close of the elections . in this State and Ohio : and the expressions of puiaic sentiment, have consequently been more pointed frequent. The gentlemen 'whose names have been most frequently referred to in connoteOn With the subject ,, are well known to _ . • , w -_ thecountry; and, ' so far asitrespects the ad , . tient Deicruta now before the People, vrelcaz ard notlfing in saying, that either, of them would . give far more satisfaction to the country, , in his management 'of our great domestie interests, than .any one who has been' named , or could be . , named among the Whigs. Among the Democrat io party the names of Buchanan, Cass, Douglass, and Houston, have all been favorably referred to ; all have warm and ardent friends ; and ei ther would serve the Demoeratiti cause faithful ly ; but there ire grounds upon which each has been' supported, that would be unavailing to some extent, for the others; and therefore there may be wide but honest differences of opinion in re flation bit the proper individual to be selected for the eminently important:station. We accord to others all the consideration, and all the"honesty, which_we claim for ourselves; unless in peculiar cases, where the coarse of • the -individuals has been such-as to forbid an acknowledgement of ___„„lisatti -ixertesty,.unless at the . Enter taining theseviews andregardinghim above every member of oar party, inpoint of merit and quali fications, we not only esteem it a: duty, bat it is also one of our highest pleasures, to aid in ad vancing his claims before the People of the coun try. Let others prefer one less eminent before the world, one less experienced in the affairs of the country, less able in debate, less powerful as a tliplemathat, less faithful and unswerving to the Democratic faith—for our part we are only free to chime one whose course is straightfor- - ward, whose opinions are always given freely andfrankly, who is always on the aide of the People; and who, we think, will, ,in the . • . „ , • • ap proaching contest, be sustained by the People- Feeling this, we are pleased_to record the 030 which are daily coming to us link; abbruit alif increasing popubuity. We present, to-day, some proofs of the esti , . mation .in which our distingoisheifellow- citizen is held, as well at home as ataiind. ,7 Wi-begin .with - the blamer county Independant Democrat, which is edited by Wit lacEsea f - Esq., who has been recently chosen by the People of thatcoun ty an. Associate Judge. He says : This week we place at the head of our paper the name of lion. James Buchanan as oar can didate for President of the United. Statetrin 1852. This has not been done for the perpcise of manu.factazing publio opinion infavor of Mr. Brithansn; it is our duty as well as our inclina tion, in preferring the claims of candidates, in all cases ta follow, rather - than to feud public aen . -thmint. , - Daring the past year we have conversed with Democrats of every section of our county on this , subject. This we have done so freely and unre servedly, asking their opinions without refer ence to our own, and find that, with a very few excepho' tut, every disinterested Democrat de clares himself openly in favor of Mr. Buchanan, sa his` first choice for the highest office in the gift of the people. The principal reasons for -this choice may be condensed in a few brief sen- Mr. Buchanan possesses, in a pre-eminent de gree, all the requisite qualifications to fill the Presidential chair with honor to himaelft and to the country. To talents and acquirements of the highest order, he unites as much experience in the political affairs of our nation as any man now living. In private life bis character is, so far as we know or have heard, without a blem ish_ Stern and unyielding in his prliniiples, for a quarter of a century he has been the mark for the shafts of malice vituperation and abuse of an unscrupulous party, whose schemes for per petuating power and wealth in the hands of the favored few he has uniformly exposed and de feated. In short he has been the best abused Democrat in the United States, a sure proof of his honesty and'devotion to his principles. Last, though noticed, he is a native of Penn sylvania. This, of itself, should give him a claim to the supporrof our citizens, were his qualifi cations and other claims less than they are. But while we - thus urge the claims of our fa vorite, we would not attempt to detract from the merits of any of thegreat 'statesmen who have been spoken of , as elittlidates for - that office.— Should Cass, Douglass, Dickinson, Marcy,;-or flotunin be the choice of the National Convection we shall yield the nominee our heartyi_ atipport, though we are sorry to* some of the partilmas of General Cass evinces very different spirit. . ; The Democratic Sentntid'at'lltdouto744,s4iT s ' 4-- .- For thirty seem thename of James Buchanan T.:.: . • . ksOlest - •" intimately txametdedisith the history . • - , '' - --4). From the M'Kean County News we learn that a meeting was held in Smethport, ontlteeviming of the 21st ultimo, to take into consideration the project of making a railroad from this city to the city of Rochester. This work was regard ed by the meeting as one of immense advantage to both the cities, as well as of the highest im portance to the country through which it is de signed to pass,—developing immense resources that are now hidden, and offering great advan tages to all the leading branches of trade in the two communities. A route through McKean county has been pronounced by competent en gineers altogether practicable ; and it is one with which no other can possibly Dome into suc cessful competition, whether the shortness of the road, or the value of the mineral, coal, Iron, &c., along the line, be taken into account. In addition to the acknowledged fact that this is the shortest practicable route between Rochester and Pitts 'burgh, we should take into consideration the fact that all the legislation necessary iiialieady loomed for its passage through McKean county—thirty five miles of the Sunbury and Erie Railroad being common to both roads.
