A riot was caused at Chagrea on the 22nd and
23rd of October, by the American boatmen at
tempting to prevent the native boatmen from
carrying passengers to and from the steamers in
harbor, because they sometimes carried them for
less than the rates fixed by the boat club. Oh
the 22d the native boatmen were attacked by the
Americans, when the native population,tarned
out, armed with guns, and crossing the river,
drove the Americans into the woods. The Amer

morning, as a number of native boats were cros

it is supposed many were killed.
The Natives became exasperated 'against the
California passengers as well as boatmen, and
commenced an indiscriminate attack upon all.
They got possession of several pieces of ord
nance from the Fort, and kept.up a constant
firing during the day across the river, which
was returned by the Americans with muskets.
The Natives also attacked all California passen

beaten and out with sabres, and houses in which
they took refuge were - threatened with demoli
tion. The excitement continued up to the. sail
ing of the Cherokee, on the evening of. the:23d.
