Wrhavii appeal ed only to Reason, to Patriotism, and that Reli gion which regards the interests of one's neigh bor as sincerely as our own; and hiltless appeals we have.thumphed, and thty have been piit down. The truth of all these positions is fully attested, by the returns which Ave Dave received from the different sections of the State. Lefiii look at the Manufacturing lUid'commercial seetions, and our gain eponiheelestlonAlf 1848 is astonishing, .even to ourselves. In the Coal and Iron districts the' same result is manifeilted. While in the 'strongholds of Abolitionism alone, (or where some petty Bei:lifts' jealousy has influenced the vo ters,) has there been any gain toihe Federalists over their vote in 1848. Mast truly has this been a triumph. of Hessen over Passion and Pre jadice,—of Patriotism over Bectionality and Fed eralism. Have we not, thin, reason most truly to rejoice Another cause of triumph to us is found in the fact, that the Federal Papers of this State,—and all others others throughout the country, taking their'cue froth these,—have used the name of Dlr. BUCHANAN in connection 'with the late con test.. They have not only patched up end re vamped all the old Iles, used against him and gin_party to which belongs, and-of which we regard him as the ablest living supporter; but they have hashed up ethers equally palpable ; and es fallyßointing out.tho low estimate which they place upon the intelligence of the People; and the desire which they manifest for keeping them in ignorance. 'We have been pleased with this issue, which they have made without a just foundation: for the great body of our party, in the outset, seemed disposed not to. draw the awe of our most distinguished statesman into the contest, owing to the strong feeling mani fested by a minority, who have favored other candidates. Our own belief has been, for a long time past, that the name of JAMES BUCHANAN would be a tower of strength to us, not only be fore the people , of Pennsylvania brit before the whole country ; and that it would inspire confi dence in the minds of the Liberal party through out the world. The name of this great man has been held up most reproachfully, in every part of the State, and the . country, with a view to de feat the Democratio party ; ha has been most bitterly assailed by men professing to be Demo eras, but on whom the great party of the coun try can place no reliance ; because they are of a class of patriots who - would sink their country, and earth, and Heaven, beneath the mountain of -their tremendous personal griefs. Such pa triots, rash Democrats we have never cared to know; and though we cannot drive such from the support of our ticket, if they really will vote for it, we had rather have their open and avow ed than a friendship whose smile is withering, and whose touch is death. Wherever we have been able to trace the lines of this des cription of Democracy, our party ticket has been defeated by- a greatly increased majority ; and we therefore hope that our true friends will be upon their guard, from the present moment for. ward, lest pretended friends shall do our cause more harm than all the money, and exertions, and influence, in every manner exerted, of our opponents, can possibly accomplish. The true Democracy of the State have indeed great rea son to rejoice, while those who have been stab bing at us under the guise of friendship, are marked for political death and destruction. We are pleased to feel and know that our gal lant Democracy of Allegheny—though working under great disadvantages, have sustained their party nobly. Here there are influences exerted against us as powerful as any in the State ; and yet, notwithstanding this, while our opponents claimed from three to four thousand of a mtOor ty over us, they have actually gained nothing since the last election. Let us, then heartily rejoice over our victory, and while preparing for another contest with open and avowed polit ical enemies, let us keep a watchful eye upon those quarters from which we have seen treason atalkielg forth, and prepare to be revenged upon file tea#lore, Clarion County. We have letters and private advicea from Cla rion county, by whioh we learn that Bigler re ceives a majority of about 1060, which is a gain of T 7 since 1848. Clover's majority is about 1160. This the people of Clarion county, who know Seth Clover, have branded the infamous falsehoods circulated agaizuit • him by reckless federal partisans. This result shows also, that the political " Iron Masters" of Clarion can not control the honest Democracy of that gallant little comity: " . AikiiArkin °a g unty. Resolved, That we invite the people of Alla gheny county to 00-operate with their German fellow-citizens in all such arrangementa as they may deem suitable, and may have fixed upon, for the purpose of extending appropriate honors to their distinguished guest, the PATRIOT His EEL. Mr. Rose being called upon, made some elo quent remarks in relation to the beneficial objects contemplated by the mission of Dr. Kin kel, and gave a brief general outline of the present state:of affairs in Europe. ' Remarks were also made by Col. Inv*, lion. W. W. Irwin and Col. Ross Snowden. cer The above committees are no:lncited to assemble, on Friday, at 1 o'olook, at the Mon. ongabela House. We aro pleased to learn that our old, friend THOMAS L. JstrartT, Esq., has been elected Presi dent Judge of the district composed of tho coun ties of Jefferson, Harrison and Tuscarawns, in Ohio. His opponent was Jens A. B/SORAX, Esq , a worthy citizen, but a very bitter whig. The district usually gives a large whig majority; and the result shows that the people prefer a moderate, intelligent, gentlemanly Democrat, to a mere whig politician. Mr. JswErr is a very able lawyer, and will make a popular judicial officer. We learn from private telegraphic despatches received in the city, that the entire Democratic Judicial Ticket is elected in Ohio. This is cer tainly gratifying news. The names of the euc cessful candidates are:—William B. Caldwell, B. P. Ranney, John A. Corwin, Thos. W. Bart ley, Allen 0 Thurman. In Jefferson county, the whole Democratic ticket is elected by a handsome majority. We are glad that old Jefferson has redeemed her self. The Hyacinth. " Hail to thee' bail, thou lovely dower' Still Med around thy sweet perfume, Still *mile amid the wintry hoar. And bow e'en then a rprisgttirae bloom Thus hope, midst life's severity days. Still !mac+, still triumphs o'er despair, Alike she lives In pleasure's rays, And cold affliction's vitiator air." There are about thirteen hundred varieties of this family of plants, comprising all the various hues, as white, pink, red, yellow, blue, purple, oriwson, &a., and some of those with various colored eyes. They begin to produce their flowers in the open borders early in April, on short erect stems covered with florets or small bells ; each floret is well filled with petals rising towards the centre, and is suspended from the stem, by short strong footstalks, the longest at the bottom, and the uppermost florets stniad so erect as to form a pyramid. A plantation, or bed of these, has a very beautiful appearance, provided they are well attended to. In planting them, which should be in the months of October or November, care should be taken to have the colors diversified so as to suit the fancy ; they may be placed in short rows across the bed, about eight inches apart, and from three to four inches deep, measured from the top of the bulb, and covered up at the setting in of winter. Those who wish a fine collection, should have an awning erected in the spring, to screen them from the chilling blast, and also from drenching rains and the noonday sap ; and they should be looked over as soon as they make their appear ance above ground, - to see if they are all perfect and regular; if faulty or inferior bulbs should appear to have been planted in a conspicuous part of the bed, by accident or mistake, they can be taken out, and by shortening the rows, others may be substituted with a trowel. When all are regulated, look over them frequently, and as the stems shoot up, tie them to wires, or small rods, with shreds of boas matting or thread, being careful not to injure the florets. In about six weeks after they have done flowering, the bulbs may be taken up, and managed as recom mended for bulbs In general.—Florist's Guide. Harvesting Buckwheat; Buckwheat requires more care in harvesting in order to prevent loss from the shaking off the seeds than any other crop. Some writers re commend cutting it as soon as one third of the seeds are turned brown; others say two thirds. If we wait for all to ripen, the earliest and best portion of the grain will be lost. When perhaps one third of the seeds are turned brown, the grain should be out ; and as the straw is very succulent and juicy, the unripened grain will draw nourishment from the stock, and will 511 out and ripen very well after it is out. Some prefer to cut this grain when it is wet with dew. The most approved method of harvesting is to cradle the buckwheat, an then with a rake put it into bunches about the size of ordinary wheat sheaves, and set them np without binding. By raking or rolling it together with a rake, it is interwoven in such a manner that it will gaud any desirable length of time, and when suffi ciently dry it may be taken up with a fork emit placed on the cart without the loss of a grain. It is very easily threshed, when in a good con- • dition. It will often be necessary to let it re main in the bunch ten or twelve days before it becomes sufficiently dried and cured. It ravel suffers any injury from exposure to rains. ,"; J. Conklin has been foiind guilty of arson in the first degree, for tiring- the barn of Mr. Say. res, at Utica, in February last.
