DEMOCRATS OF MIEIMEMY I • We path solemn question to you: ARE YOU PREPARED FOR THE BATTLE! The elec tion is close at hand, and you have brit little' time left • for preperatoi7' ikrgatiliation. That time must bettsefully employed. - Every Ford, and•township should have its Committee to class the voters, and bring out every DeMocrat TO THE POLLS. Let this not be neglected.— EVERY MAN should be brought to the polls. BE CAREFUL To examine well and, see that the Ballot Box is empty when the voting commences. By no means suffer yoinselves to neglect_ Ails. ,There is more in it than strikes the eye'f,:t frit tight. Pnic , most ontrageovis fronds will undoubtedly be committed upon the ballot boxes by the Fed ralists this year unless they are closely watched. "Again we caution and entreatyon todook out for the Federalists, who have grown desperate, and resort to ANY MEANS' to -accomplish their ends. COUNT THE VOTES As soon as the Polls are closed. Insist that this be done, and with open doors, in every in stance. Iteniember, freenien, Abut the ballot boils your only hope. It is there where your liberties will be preierved or lost. These hea ven-bought privileges were purchased by the blood of your fathers,—you hold them only up on the tenure of eternal vigilance. ILLEGAL VOTERS Must be watched. Hundreds of votes of this character will be given, tmleas the Democrats watch the Polls with an Eagle eye, and sternly resist any thing in the shape of fraud. Let those be carefully watched. BE AT THE POLLS, Democrats, no matter ' , whether it haat, rains, or snows, be at the Polls, and be there before they are open. Talk to your friends,—talk to the federalists—tell them the truth—conviction al ways goes hand in hand with truth. Many Democrats at heart may vote with the federalists, not knowing the fact, and all their lives after have cane to pagr44 - it. See such'inen, and talk to them about the comparrythey aro in--expostu late with them about casting a. vote now that may afterirrirtis 'be 'a: reprOSA not only upon them, but upon their children's children—for federalism is at this enlightened day a deep re proach to any man. WHEN THE POLLS ABE OPEN, Voteyonraelf and then LOOS OUT for the BEST. Be at hand all day, and if there be a Democrat missing, • -- START OUT AFTER HIM, ly, he may. belackward wits his business, and unablitolose the time reqtiired to go to the plaits of :voting. Send hill" song and work - „for 2 'him gourerlf. Do anything that is FAIR and HONORABLE - to ' GET OTT THE VOTERS. It is needless to say that' this is the way the feterarurta do THEY.A.LWAXS.ELAVE DONE SO—their voters Wirer fail to be at the polls— whiletha Democrats very often are too thronged with work to go to the Eleotion2 BEAR IT IN MIND , Some men station themselves at the ballot box on the day of election, to browbeat andOviir awe POOR MEN, who may happen to t he be' in debt to them. DEMOCRATS! will you suffer this thing to be done ? No, you must never tamely bend"to thelYitint Ogiii'itale yoke. You must be permitted to vote precisely as you wish linswed by influence and unbribed by gain." STAND AT THE POLLS Until the' box is closed and see that the old and infirm Democrats are not kept away from voting by ilie-crowd. Men are employed in some places to block nit the polls and keep the Demo crats away. Watch well that the way is kept clear. _ . _ THE BATTLE Now is near • at hand : ;Are zon all ready? The intelligent and iih4al ',Of' all parties concur in - the admitsioti . thatruslitliole; it is of superior merit. The gentlemen nomi nated are distinguished in this community for indrittry, intellecrylearningV and intettity":` Aa to the candidates for the District Court, our. nominees have decidedly the advantage, in these qualifications, over their opponents:. 'AsrOgirds the Court of Common Pleat, the same phifer ence not only exists;• but the weak a ess of Jiifige McClure, arising from the general eonviction of his utter inoompetenoy to fill a judicial poste is ever) , day more apparent. There is, a growing feeling of alarm, that one who has proved him self so flatly unfit for this respontible - idttion, should be fastened on us for ten years to c4ne, although, in the short term he hag held the office, he has failed to satisfy exPtiflatitini or create any hope that he can improve. Impa tient, capricious, fitful — 4 . every thing by turns but nothing long," he has brought to the task of decision neither memory nor judgment. It is a common saying at the bar, that he knows just enough to go wrong. For instance, in an indict ment for adultery, against one living with a pretended second wife, he carighi hold of the principle, that a wife can be admitted as a wit ness against her husband, to prove injuries to her person,—and allowed the first and lawful wife to be a witness against her wedded hus band, on the ground that adultery with another woman was a personal injury to her, (the wit ness)—a conclusion which would array husband against wife, wife against husband, and destroy the peace of every family, by annihilating the confidence which arises from the rule that they cannot testify one against the other. As the result of his strange and fanciful perceptions, and the impossibility of calculating his conolu gone in accordance with sound reason or writ ten law, the most school-boy propositions are made and contested for hours of the public time, without more certainty of the result than can be foretold of tossing coppers. In the bare possibility that the mere party ascendency might be driven into the fury of electing him, it is already asked how soon the county and Commonwealth will be occupied by the vexatious, difficult, and uncertaiit" process, which will be required to throw off a grievance, which has been borne thus far only, because the election promised relief. But we cannot be lieve in such an alternative. The remedy of the ballot boxes is at hand, and more summary and effectual. The sentence of the people is already as conspicuous to the vision of the alarmed Judge, as the hand writing on the walLto the trembling Belshazzar. He has appeared in rain to the whipsters of party, to raise the lash on those who are flinching from " thrbuirrzatire of his nomination." All but the politicians are de termined to teach the wire pullers the necessity of proposing the best men of the party for Judges, or suffering their defeat. The 'sons of Temper ance, whose aid he also invokes, will not help one who joined them after the Judiciary became elective, in spite of his violent opposition here and abroad; and after their votes became ma material, as a political organitation to secure his re-election. Reception of Minkel. In Philadelphia and Baltimore this distin guished patriot and philosopher has been re ceived with unbounded hospitality by both the Germans in general, and the Detioeratic por tion of our fellow-citizens. Nor can we imagine how it could be otherwise. Such a man as he must be dear to the People every where. None should fear him but tyrants; and he is now be - Yond their reach.. Ars -db—eurriedir Ehat "dny arrangements have been made to welcome him in Pittsburgh ; and therefore hope that some steps may be taken having reference to that end. We understand that he will reach here on some day of the present week; and we sincerely hope that there will be such arrangements made as will insure to him a reception of a character commensurate with his character as a man, a scholar and a poet. THE MARYLAND ELECTION. The elections for Congress, Which took place in this State on Wednesday last, resulted in the choice of the following gentlemen First District—Richard J. Bowie, whig, re elected. Second District—William T. Hamilton, demo crat, reelected. Third Dietriot--Edward Hammond, democrat, re-elected.. Fourth District—Thomas Yates Walsh, whig, gain. Fifth District—Alexander Evans, whig, re elected. Sixth District—Daniel M. Henry ,whig We had expected better things in the Fourth District (part of the City of Baltimore); but our Mends have not done their duty there, and it is no use to scold about it. They will lose that influenceig Congress which .nothing but their own negligence could fail to secure for them ; and will have no sight to complain of negligence ou the part of others. The gentlemai'who has been chosen, though a Whig, will not be able to do the party in general any harm, even if he were disposed to do so ; and we are told that he is an amiable and honorable man. Let the People litonevaber, That - 'John - Strohm, the rileertildidate for Canal Commissioner, was a member of Con gress during the war with Mexico. It has been charged upon him, that HE VOTED AGAINST GRANTING SUPPLIES TO OUR ARMY there, at the most critical juncture. 'This his supporters have flatly denied, until within a few -weeks past ; in which time a letter has been drawn from him, in which he admits all that the Demo crats ever charged against him. Therefore, when you shall go to the Polls, remember that this same John Strohm was willing to let our fellow-citizens, then on the borders of Mexico, be BUTCHERED or Bream; rather'than-vote for the bill granting them the .necessary supplies. Tom Corwin said that the Mexicans ought to welcome them with bloody hands to hospitable graves;. and John Sirohnt was willing that they should be starved or murdered ; and either gave him little concern. Persons who have recently been to Pittsbncgh, state that there is far more building and busi ness being done in Wheeling at this moment., than in Pittsburgh, and that there are more houses for rent in Pittsburgh than they ever saw saw before. Our firstrailrond opening, through Wellsville the coming winter, and Baltimore the ensuing, with the Central and Hempfield in the summer of '6B, will give us another lift. Balt. Correspon: denten" dating.from.London Sept. 1, communi cates the following: "In the revolutionary committees established here, a most unusual activity has been observ able during the last .fortnight, which mad' be considered as the forerunner of great events, to transpire, ere long, upon the European Conti nent Mazzini has had frequent conferences with the French committee, in which a shunt laneaus outbreak in France and Italy has been discussed. As you may have been infornied, an universal insurrection was not to have taken place before the Spring of next year, but evints as totally unforseen as they are important, appear to have brought the grand moment of the European Revolution consideraoly nearer.* The task of reigning, in these stirring and ominous times of ours, seem to rest too heavily upon the Emperor of Austria and his " faCto tum" Sohwarzenberg, particularly while the im perial Treasury is empty, and so, to withdraw himself with honor frOm the affair, his Austrian Majesty has applied to that greatest of all liv ing political jugglers, Prince Metternich, with a proposal that the latter shall take into his own hands the conduct of the ship of state. The re ply to such an offer was worthy of a Metternich. Before he could make his entrance into Vieona as Prime Minister—thus it ran—every trace of a constitutional charter must vanish, and the Emperor become sole autocratic master of all the subjects of the Empire. Then would Met ternich be responsible to the Emperor only, and not to the " canaille" and placed in such an ir responsible position, -he would endeavor to res tore the old tranqnility."t Farther on he says:—" Mazzini is a great, impenetrable riddle. This man, although the spies of European despotism surround him, and more than one dagger threatens his life, has sworn allies everywhere, even within the clo sest privacy of the villains who wear crowns. To him, no intrigue, not even the most jealously guarded, remains unknown. He has in his pos session, a copy of the letter to Metternich, and the answer of the latter to the Cabinet at Vien na. The plan of the next Revolution, as de vised by this great Italian, is, perhaps, the grandest masterpiece that. ever fell from the pen of a mortal.: Of course no portion of it can, at present, be made public know only thus much, that the gaze of Europe will be diverted from the real theatre of the next Revolution towards Pori/. For this purpose a few hundred patriots have assembled in the capital of France, to un dertake a sham attack, which will be betrayed, and these martyrs will thereby be flung into prison. The papers found about them will throw the sleuth-hounds of Despotism, upou a false scent, and thus give the Revolution leisure to strike successfully au important blow in a quar ter where no man expects it. We are approaching a time of profoundest agitation, of most startling events, to which all the occurrences of 18418 formed but a mere pre lude. It will be a time in which the question whether Europe is to become republican or C 4) sack must be decided. It is the Princes, Who have heaped up the nmterials of combustioq— their broken faith—their pitiful conduct, during their time of apparent triumph, the supercilious insolence, which characterizes every step they mated] All together have operated to es trange the hearts of even those who were still true to the throne in 1848. When the great deep is broken up again, there will no longer.be seen the struggle of a party against the crown-- but the nations will unite to form one vast party opposed to the crowned confederates. This is an additional circumstance to show that the tl^i umpli of the People is inevitable, and I will, therefore, I hope, have no occasion to order ac commodations on American soil." •Events in Italy !lunge?). and South America --Trans. t Late accounts !spryscut Metternich a. danrerously ill at his estate of Jobanuistierg apon the Rhine —M 1 241 I Glorious Italy' ever the first When she cannot awskr, tactile oraigtti - or tier feller., she pljiMA 0.1 the Minq 10 those whose rim' , • are less firmly lea• craelly pinioned-- Trans This is the grand arrest of retagers--i he splendid stupidity of a usually shrewd police—which tins thrown ill ihr strangers in Paris into such commotion '• (Islam cry and liras wool "—Trans. lAR hands get drunk in a at-acing ship. We take pleasure in copying the following from the "Jeffersonian," printed at Clarkeaville, Tenn. This is one of the most radical and effi cient newspapers of the Southwest:— One of the ablest, most energetic and efficient papers in the Union, is the Philadelphia Penn sylvanian, edited by John W. Forney, Esq. It is eminently national in its tone, and its editori als are characterized by a vigor and strength which delights and refreshes the reader. If any of our friends wish a democratic paper from the north, sound upon all constitutional questions, werecommend the Pennsylvanian. John W. For ney, Esq., its editor, at the organization of the last Congress, was a candidate for Chief Clerk, but was defeated on account of his devotion to the South. He is again a candidate, and it would gratify us much to see the entire vote of the Southern delegation cast for him. The Cuban Revolt Dr. Ashbel Smith, of Texas, now in Europe, published a letter in the London Times, giving an account of the origin and development, since so disastrously terminated. Among other things, he says : "The movement now in progress, having for its object a change in the political relations ,of Cuba, originated in that island, and exolusivOly with the Creole population of Spanish origin ; and of the early steps of that movement, snakes the publication of certain articles in Americuu newspapers, the purchase of arms and muncticins and the enlisting of volunteers in different parts of the United States for the purpose of carryitig into effect the revolutionary attempts, were paid for by money raised in Cuba, and contributied for this very purpose by the Creole Spaniards. As to any money that may have been recently collected, as well as expressions of sympatliy, and other acts of co-operation ou the part of American citizens since the Cuban convulsion has assumed its present magnitude ; all these, 1 say have, in point of fact, nothing to do with the origin of the movement." Row they Preserve Order In Austrtni The Vienna correspondent of the London News, describes the following shocking affair is having taken place at Scent Maria, near amiss Waradrid lately: At a peasant's wedding, when the procession of the betrothed was moving towards the church, the gendarme approached the bride and sum vwehstiahhersaheelf h o a f d tt i e red,m on sum moned ta e r aa immediatelyderibbons her dresses, according to the custom of the t .3 di country girls, saying that these colors were rev olutionary. The bridegroom objected, sayntig that after the ceremony the bride would comply with the desire of the gendarme, but that now they could not keep the priest waiting at the dl tar. The gendarme retired, the procession pro ceeded to the church, but the moment when the bride was kneeling at the steps of the altar to receive the benediction, the gendarme rushed forward and cut her tresses and ribbons with scissors from her head. In Hungary it is con sidered a great insult to a female to cut her hair, it conveys the notion of infamy. Naturally an affray took place : the gendarme was assailed by the bridegroom, other gendarmes arrived in aid of their fellow official, the people, though, with out arms, rushed upon them, and the result wss the slaughter of seven men, three gendarmes and four peasants, among them the bridegroom and the brutal assailant of the bride. Again it is asked, "Isnotthe scarcity of money with natiOni , er individutsh l / 4 simply the evidence of either traproduetiveness or indebtedness; or, in other words, that the outlays exceed the in comes". Herethe oGazettea correspondent proves himself. to be ignorant of the first principles of Political Economy. He falls into the com mon error, in regard to the real value of money, which has kept the honest masses of the Whig party blundering for years. Why, man, money is not the realmealth ota nation, anymore than the bushel that measures the. wheat is the wheat iteelf;' and I lay it droNo as a settled' 'act, that the nation that has brit Utt& money, and a great deal of real wealth, is always more prosperous and hap py, than the nation that has a great deal of money, and very little real wealth. Spain was powerful and prosperous, until she filled her coffers with gold and silver from the rich mines of -Sopth Miseries. Since then, she has boutiniiedlii ffealine, and that once proud and powerful nation 111.110 W. in the last throes of national existence. England has so much money, that she can lend to the United States and other nations. The Lords and Clergy, office holders and national credi tors, I suppose, are all satisfied with the state of things there ; but our correspondent says the masses are 'elave's and paupers ; and it is very true, that although England is a great nation, with many of her individuals rich and prosper ous, with prenty of money in her national trea sury and banks; yet her people are starving to death for want of bread. Do you call this ria- - - tional prosperity, Mr. McGowin ? Money was never so teptrin niptry , in proportion to the, popti lion, as ii iB3ll, and ; yet, with all our money, we imported grain from the Baltic, and other parts of Europe, when the state of Ohio could have raised enough to have supplied the whole'country. Do you call that national prosperity, Mr. McGowin? Would it be sound policy to accept ass gift from a foreign nation, that which we are equal to produce ourselves," is the next question ask ed by. Mr. M'Oowin. Certainly not, if Whig policy is correct, that is, to-make Man the means Labor the end. then doWn with all laborsaving machinery, raise your Tea and Coffee, and spices in hot-bosses: destroy every improve ment in machinery and navigation, that facili tates labor here, ur helps us to a cheaper or better article, produced by a more congenial climate from abroad; shutout the glorious light of day, and barn _gas, 01, and _tallow : , for that will make mare labor; tear app.= Railroads and fill up your Canals, for that will increase labor ; and let us at once petition our Whig council to pass a city ordinance, to have-the Water Works suspended at once. and Carry the water from the river iu the good old way ; for that' will make more labor for our toiling population. Such is the absurd anti-progressire idea advanced by Mr. M'Oowin, and the Whig party ; thgy make the interests of money and labor to be identical one and the same. so that in legislating for money ; you legislate for labor at the same time ; that is take care of the rich, and the rich will take care of the poor." , In regard to the otter inquiries of Mr. Ill'Oe wirr, in reference to-a'fsritt and his slang about slavery, we have little, to say, the man who is ignorant of Political Economy can never have correct ideas on a tariff • and the party that ad vocated the working of children 13 hours in Cot ton Factories, and got their Sheriff to call out the military to shoot down the paddlers and holl ers before they had committed any offence against our laws, can have little sympathy for the workingman of the north, much less for the poor slave of the .euth. ONF: OF THE RANK AND FILE. Pittsburgh end Rochester Roihrotull. An article under the above caption appeared in the Gazette of the tith inst., reiterating the intelligence that the people of Rochester, N. V., had voted in favor of a large subscription to the above road; but this demagogue editor says the road cannot be made, " unless the voters up the Allegheny as well as every where else, shall vote for Johnston and the rest of the Whig ticket." The whole article is unworthy of notice, only to inform our Rochester friends that this hire ling editor does not speak the sentiments of Pittsburgh, or of Northwestern Pennsylvania, a majority of whom deprecate and despise such unworthy attempts to influence voters. The Editor knows well that no projected improve ment has received more favor than the Pitts burgh and Rochester Road by the citizens of Pittsburgh and the Northern part of Pennsyl vania; and that the "right hand of fellowship" that is proffered by Western New York, has been received with enthusiasm on the whole line; and thus he would use its very popularity for party purposes, on the ove of an election. The writer is aware of the "power of the press," and this mercenary political' editor would no doubt hail it as a god-send (should Bigler be elected,) to favor his prophecy that this road cannot be made, except upon the con tingency that he had named, to wit : That the voters up the Allegheny should vote the Whig ticket. The citizens of Rochester may rest assured that this projected Road is not altogether in the hands of politicians ; and that the desire as well as the ability to complete it warms the heart of every NORTHWESTERN PENNSYLVANIAN. Tun Loonnsa-GnAss Ith.r-Tear.—The Journal of the Franklin Institute contains the specifica tions of a patented mouse-trap. This improved body-snatching is as follows : " A savory piece of toasted cheese is suspend ed on a hook. Enter rat. A small mirror is so adjusted that the rat sees his shadow in the glass, (just as Itichard did,) and notrecognizing himself at first sight, thinks that some other rat is aiming for the cheese. He rushes in to head off his rival. The board he treads on is a de ceiver. It is supported by a weak spring, which yields under his weight and precipitates him in to a lower story of the trap, when the floor flies up to resume its place.. Another rat comes along—sees the reflood= of his predecessor as well as his own, and thinks two rats are fighting for the cheese. In he goes, down he goes—and so on tokies quotees." COHMERDIAL INTERCOURSE' WITH THE EAST. Mr. Balestier, sent by Gen. Taylor as Commer cial Agent to Cochin Ohhia,-Siaiii,' Borneo, and the Malay Islands, has returned to the United States, having failed in his mission to.negotiste a treaty with Cochin Chins, whose government adheres rigidly to the principle of non-inter course. At Siam the reception was more friend ly, but the result was substantially the same. At Borneo satisfactory cornmercial arrangements were entered into with the Sultan. of Bruni, and with the Rajah of .Sarawak, although the departure of the latter for England, in conse quence of illness, postponed the -completion of the stipulation. DYSENTEILY.—This disease has been very se vere in some sections of this county. In Cran berry, Mercer, Washington, Parker and Venango townships, it has been particularly severe. We have been informed that there was scarcely a family in those townships, but one or more of its members have suffered from its effects. Al though it prevailed to some extent, heretofore, yet this summer it assumed a virulent form, and a great many died, principally young children. It is now fast disappearing, and we hope, with the change of weather, the general health of the county will be restored.—Butler Herald. They loudly call ed the Police to arrest him, but those gentlemen paid no attention ; at last, one of the sufferers, in despair, shouted Viva la Republique ! At this the police rushed up in great force to sup press such an outrage on public order and se curity. As an illustration of how easily life may be sustained in the Polar latitudes, Surgeon Kane mentions that he fell in with a Dane over seven ty years of age, who had spent fifty-five years of his life north of 780, subsisting during that period entirely on birds fish, bears, and other animal food. He_had not seen a vegetable the whole time. Mysterious Affair. A few days since a singular affair„-eattrred near Crittenden, Ky., which has created quite a sensation in the immediate neighborhood, on ac count of the death of a_wife, and murder of her child. The particulati, so far as we ascertain ed, from our infOrmant, are these : Some two months since, a Mr. Hall—then considered a respectable, honest man, under the garb of re ligion—was married to the sister of his for mer wife, but a few months deceased His sec ond wife, was delivered of a child in two months after marriage, unattended by physician or friends. Immediately after the child's birth, Hall took the same, nailed it in a box, and con cealed it in a vault in the cornfield, evidently made for the purpose. The next day the broth er-in-law of Mr. Hall accidently discovered the box containing the child, which was still alive. On the evening of the same day the wife died, and was buried. After the lapse of two weeks, suspicions were aroused among the neighbors that all was not right; search-was made, and the box, containing the infant, found. Marks of violence were discovered on its person and black Marks no its neck, proving beyond a doubt thatik, kati been strungled to death These facts were con fessed by the brother-in-law. Hall, 'hearing of the discoveries made, effected his escape. A warrant has been issued for ids arrest, and dili gent search is going on to bring the inhuman villain and murderer to Justice. —Cincinnati Commercial. 11AVICEILEL Fistuntse.—Most of the "large vessel" engaged in the fisheries on the Massa chusetts coast have this year resorted to Bay Chaleur. One hundred and forty vessels have sailed from Gloucester alone, and, with their car goes, are valued at over four hundred thousand dollars. Their crews comprised some fifteen hundred men. In addition to the above, the Boston papers inform us that there are fourteen vessels absent from Annisquam and six from Rockport. Many of these vessels are now on their third trip to the Bay this season, and all that arrive for a fortnight or three weeks to come will leave immediately for another fare. The success of the vessels has not been equal in the Bay of St. Lawrence this year; at some points the vessels have obtained handsome fares in five or six weeks, while others have been absent from nine to twelve weeks, and have caught short of a hundred barrels. The Gloucester vessels Gave been unusually successful, and vessels are ar riving every day with full fares. Sheleft Martel on the 9th inst. On the 12th, in tat. 20 N., long, 74 50, during a heavy squall, was struck by lightning, which injured the main mast. The captain reports the wind N. E. in the Gulf stream, which has been blowing a hur ricane for the last 48 hours. Capt W. reports that a few days before he left Muriel, some 20 or 25 more prisoners, con nected with the Cubtaexpedition, had been cap tured in the neighborhood, whom he saw in eharge of the Spanish officers. They were chiefly Americans and Englishmen—four of them being Spaniards, one of whom was a sergeant and for merly belonged to the Spanish army, and had joined Gen. Lopez, during the Cardenas attack, and came to the United States with him. He returned with Gen_ L. to Bahia Honda, and bas now been captured and sent to Havana. Mrriel is quiet, but the Spanish officers are insolent to Americans, and ezort money from them whenever an opportunity occurs. THE NEW SWEET POTATO.—Wp made reference the other day to a new variety of the sweet po tato, believed to have been brought from some part of South America. Superiority as to size, flavor, was claimed for it over all other kinds. We suggested that it was probably the West India yam, which grows in most tropical countries, and is frequently met with in the vegetable market here. This has brought a note from an esteemed correspondent, who knows something of this new variety, and he intimates that we shall Boon have an opportunity ourselves of judging of its merits. " The fact is," he says, "the root is different in growth and every quality from every one we have here, and I, as well as many who have tasted them, view them as entirely superior. They grow either in the shape of thick yam potato, or like a turnip ; great proportion of the large size in that form. For my own part, I consider them the moat ele gant root on a table that I know of, when pre pared as the Irish potato ; and to me they seem a connecting link between a fine mealy Irish po tato and a sweet potato.—Mobile Herald. A NOTABLE COTTON FACT.—A return recently issued of the quantities of cotton imported into England, presents some remarkable totals. In 1850 the . imports from the United States were 493,168,112 lbs., while in 1849 they had been 684,504,050 lbs. On the other hand, the imports from the East Indies were 118,872,742 lba. in 1850, the total in 1849 having been only 70,838,- 516. Thus, while the quantity imported from the East Indies in 1849 was equal only to about 11 per cent. of that imported from the United States,. in 1860 it was equal to nearly 26 per cent. The importation of cotton from all parts last year was 668,576,861 lbs., against 755,469,- 042 lbs. in 1849. It also appears from the same return that the declared value of the English to tal exports to the United States was £11,971,028 in 1849, and £14,801,961 in 1850. As the value of our exports to all the world in the latter year was £71,459,000, it follows that the trade with the United States was nearly 23 per cent. of the whole. Hamburg is to fall to Prus sia. The "Independence," however, mentions the rumor with reserve. " '"- . , - ,-!,.'..
