What was thought of RoLlroads Forty The Albany Journal publishes the following letter in reply to a suggestion about railroads._ written forty years ago, by Chancellor Living ston, who had been associated with his brother in-law Robert Fulton in the application of steam to vessels. " DEAR STE :—I did not till yesterday receive yours of the 26th February, where it has loiter ed on the road lamat a loss to say. I had be fore read of your very ingenious proposition as to the railway communication. I fear, how ever, on mature reflection, that they will ble to a serious objection and the ultimately more expensive than a canal. They 'must be double to prevent the danger of two such heavy bodies meeting. The walls on which they are placed must be at least four feet below the sur face, and three feet above, and must be clamped with iron, and even then would hardly sustain so heavy a weight as you propose moving at the rate of four miles an hour on wheels. As to wood it would not last a week. They must be covered with iron, and that, too, very thick and strong. The means of stopping these heavy car riages, without great shock, and of preventing them from running upon each other—for there would be many running upon the road at once, would be very difficult. In cases of accidental stops, or the necessary stops to take in wood and water, &c., many accidents would happen. The carriage of condensing water would be very troublesome. Upon the whole, I fear the expense would be much greater than that of canals, with out being so convenient. PBMISYLLUZIA'S Dun, The New Orleans Picayune of the 17th InsL, in an article upon the recent slave riot in Lancaster county, says : " But, whatever may be the facts of this out break, Pennsylvania has a duty to perform to humanity, to law, to the obligations of the Con stitution, and the rights of her sister States, which must be performed to the uttermost. She must clear her own skirts of this foul outrage, by pursuing the perpetrators, by seizing them with the strong hands of inflexible justice, by making them an expiation for the deadly sin with which they have polluted her borders, and by offering every atonement possible to the vic tims of the irreparable crime and to their repre sentatives. And with this glaring example before her eyes of the horrible extremities to whioh the spirit of riot tends, and of the natural effect of the evil passions which AbolitiOnism fosters and stimulates, she must, at least, take warning for the future, from this terrible affair of horror and disgrace; and we mistake her traits of character much, if it do not rouse that sober. and conservative spirit for which she has been distinguished throughout all these contro versies, into a resolute action to crush within her borders the desperate faction whose teach ings have produced and encouraged these law less acts. "'fay her sternness, her energy, her justice and her forethought, bring some good at least out of this great evil and wrong. The eyes of the South will watch her with intense interest, for she holds mighty results within her grasp. May she earn the confidence they are willing to pay if she only proves that she deserves it; but now it is not a little that will acquit her and satisfy them." Her cloths are rather more comely than costly, and she makes plain cloth to be velvet by her hand some wearing it. She is none of your dainty dames, who love to appear in a variety of suits every day new, as if a good gown, like a strata gem in war, were to be used but once : but our good wife sets up a sail according to the keel of her husband's estate ; and if of high parentage, she doth not remember what she was by birth, that she forgets what she is by match. Ardana imperil (her husband's nerds) she will not divulge. Especially she is careful to conceal his infirmities. If he be none of the wisest, she so orders it that he appears on the public stage but seldom; and then he hath conned his part so well that he comes off with great applause. If his forma intormays be but bad, she provides him better/at-ma+ vents and secretaries. In her husband's absence she is wife and deputy husband, which makes her double the files of her dilsgence. At his return he finds all things so well, that he wonders to see himself at home when he was abroad. In her husbaruf a sickness she feels more grief than she chews. Partly that she may not dis hearten him; and partly because she is not at leisure to seem so sorrowful, that she may be the more serviceable. The heaviest work of her servants she maketh light by orderly and seasonably enjoining it: wherefor her service is counted a preferment, and her teaching better than her wages. Her maids follow the precedent of their mistress, and live modestly at home. One asked a grave gentlewoman, how her maids came by so good husbands, and yet seldom went abroad? 0, said she, good husbands come home to them. So much for this subject ; and what is defective in this description shall be supplied by the pattern en suing.— Thomas Puller. MINICAL.—It is said that Mr. Boobsa has au thorized Mr. Bunn, a London manager, to lease for him, if possible, at any expense, the great Crystal Palace.
