False Pretences. —On oath of R. 8. McCoy, Aid. Steele yesterday issued a warrant for Mi chael Kelly, on a charge of having obtained from him money by means of false tokens. Forgery. —Sami. Kelly, of Chartiers township, is charged, on oath of R. S. McCoy, with having altered an instrument of writing, and procured from him money on it illegally. A warrant was issued for his arrest by Aid. Steele. A small colored boy fell from a walnut tree near the Cemetery, on Sunday, and was nearly killed. Several minutes elapsed before he revived. Judge Jones, who has been for some time rusticating in Europe, arrived on Sunday evening. His tour has detracted no thing from his appearance. The Artiste* Union of Cincinnati have elected A. B. Russell, Esq., Editor of the Token, Honorary Secretary for this city. Larceny . —Samuel Grist is charged, on oath of R. S. McCoy, with the larceny of a hand-saw. Aid. Steele has issued a warrant for his arrest. There were six ordinary cases before his Honor yesterday morning, which were disposed of in the usual manner. The grand ploughing match comes off on the 11th of November instead of the 11th of October, as announced yesterday. The place has not yet been fixed. The rubbish about Ryan’s building is being cleaned up, preparatory to re-building. Diamond Alley, above Smithfield street, is being paved. She brings one day’s later news from California, received by way of San Joan. There is nothing in her news of interest The dates from Havana are to the 17th, and nothing of special interest [SBOOIfD DESPATCH.] The Cherokee brings information that 46 American prisoners are still confined at Havana. The Spanish Consul had left for Spain. Nearly $70,000 had been subscribed for the widows of those who fell in defence of the Isl and. The funeral obsequies of those slain were celebrated in the Cathedral at Havana on the 9th. Crosses had been distributed to the sol diers by the Captain General, after which he had proceeded to Bahia Honda to inspect in person the distribution of rewards among the people. The steamer Monumental City left San Fran cisco on the 16th of August, and reached San Juan on the 6th of September, with 130 passen gers, but no gold. The Falcon left San Juan on the 11th of Sep tember, and arrived on the 16th. The Cherokee left at Havana the U. S. steam er Saranac and the sloop of war Albany. The passengers report having visited the American prisoners in Havana on the 19th. They were in good health, and 26 were sick in the Hospital. They expressed their thanks to the British Con sul for his great kindness and attendance. On the 15th, eight more American prisoners were brought into Havana, having been taken in the mountains. Among the prisoners sent to Spain were Jno. Boswell, C. A. McMurray and P. Hanna, of Baltimore. Thos. Hilton, of Washington; J. Chapman, of Charleston. Benj. Gilmer and Chas. Deblin, of Cincinnati. A 1 noon, yesterday, a fire broke out in Cod diDgton’s extensive Chair Factory, on Vine Bt., which was totally destroyed, together with thir teen adjoining buildings, mostly second, class dwellings. Seven of the buildings are partially destroyed. Coddington’s loss As $66,000. Insu rance $16,000. Total loes $lOO,OOO. Total in surance about $25,000. STEAMBOAT EXPLOSION. Louisvillk, September 22. The sieumer James Jackson, when leaving Shawneetown, on Sunday, exploded two boilers, killing and scalding thirty-five persons. The steamer Cumberland Valley was close to her at the time, and towed the wreck ashore. Many of the scalded have since died. The official census returns of South Carolina give a free population of 283,623. The slave population is 84,984. The President’s health is entirely restored. ■£» Wm. Wells, a Marine, was fully committed to take his trial, at the December term, for the murder of the youth named Mundelly, in shoot ’ug him vrith last Thursday. K. R. The bark Vesta, from Philadelphia for this port, was wrecked last night, below this city. The crew was saved.
