Ryan, the owner of the building, is m the East; -where he went for the purpose of pur chasing a large stock, and was expected home yesterday.' What a scene for him to contem plate! Ho large a share of his elegant four sto ry bnck building—one of the finest in the city— in ruins. - It is but about a year since when the building, occupying the same place* was entire ly consumed, and his fortune, which had re quired years of hu indomitable energy, industry and perseverance to accumulate, was laid m ashes: but with his characteristic, undaunted perseverance, he was enabled to rear upon its ruins the splendid edifice which stood there yes terday. and a portion of which (the most valua ble. perhaps.) still remains there. He has a brave heart, and is nchly deserving of abund ant success. Let his fnends but stick to him. as we hope and-believe they will, and he will yet champion the fate which Beems so perverse to his interests. The portion of the building destroyed, was occupied by several different persons and adap ted to*a variety of purposes. Indeed it was con sidered a perfect “hive.*' giving employment to hundreds of hands in the different branches of'mechanism that employed it. The following is a list of the persons, and for What purpose they occupied the apartments: — Henderson, Machinist; Kenedy, frame maker; Love & Go., do. do.; Glassford and Go.-, do. do., had just come on from' New York and put up their machinery; Thos. A. Hiltier, frame maker: Steel and Officer, Box Factory; F. R. Bravo, spice and grist mill; Ryan and McKee’B turning factory and cabinet shop. The loss is estima ted altogether at about $15,000 of which Dra vo's will be about $5,000; on which there was $3OOO insurance, Ryan and McKee's aboht $BOOO. The others, altogether, losing the bal ance, without any insurance we could hear of. Ryan & Co., we understand, were insured in the East to the amount of $14,500. It appears there is a schute or slide extending from the first floor where the furnace and boilers are, to the fourth, down which they slide the shavings made in-the cablnetTshop. This slide comes near the furnace and' while shoving down the shavings yesterday, they, by some means took fire, when the blaze immediately ascended to the upper part of the building which was Boon en veloped in a sheet of flame 9 Baring the pro gress of the fire, the steam pipe burs ted, and in connection with the noise of the falling walls and timless spread terror through the panic strick en multitude who feared the explosion of the boilers^ The building is built in sections, with fire proof walls between. The two first sections extending from Fifth street bock ICO feet and filled with most valuable ffrrsitaierrem&ins complete and ; unharmed vto any extent. The furniture was untouched, save that in the lower front room which was carried out and which suffered but little in the removal. We suppose the portion of the building burnt extended along Virgin al ley* almost 60 feet and then from Virgin alley to where it was subdued about 100 feet. The flames, by the extraordinary and antiring exertions of the firemen, were confined to the banding, although the surrounding property was in imminent peril- They ore deserving of all praise; > _ Railroad Acddaii.— Yesterday morning an other very serious accident occurred on the Pennsylvania and Ohio Railroad. In coming np at full speed, between the Marine Hospital and Manchester, a cow stepped on the track and was passed over by the locomotive end baggage car, "but the passenger train in connection were thrown off the track and upset. The first pas senger car became detached from the baggage car-and was partly thrown across the rood, the second car came np jam against it, smashing in its front and instantly killing a child that was sitting in its mothers arms, in the second car, cutting the mother's head snd otherwise injuring her in the most severe manner. Her name is Mrs. bend ram and the wife of a laboring man working for Mr, Boyd,Ja carpenter of Allegheny. Thebrakeman on the second car, Wm. Cooper, had bis head mashed and was otherwise most horribly mangled. But slight hopes are enter tained of his recovery. Wm. Stopher a citizen of Wilmington, Lawrence Co., was also se verely injured and is now suffering from a con cussion of the brain. He will, probably re cover. There were a number qf our citizens in the cars at the time, anffMr. Moore the hatter was Blight ly injured in jumping from the-car. No one but those in the second oars were injured. The passenger cars—three in number—are very seriously damaged. To what is this accident attributable? We -think that with all the precautions that can be taken, accidents on Railroads, will occur; but no precaution should ever be omitted; in order to prevent as much as possible each occurrences. In this Instance it is . thought by most persons conversant with the particulars, that if there had been, as there should have been, a cow catcher pn,the locomotive, this most serious ao cidratyr resulting in the loss of life, would not have occurred. We hope that this matter may undergone rigid investigation, and the culpable, if any there be, held to a strict accountability. worthy Manager commences his second season to-night with the most bril liant prospects, and with a company said to be second to tonkin the Union.
