GREAT OUBA»Hrai®TISG.
• Pursuant to 1 a call in the several newspapers.
■-.. uf tlio City, and by handbills widely distributed,
a large concourse of citizens assembled at IVil
■ ■ kinH Uall last evening,' to Consider ohtiio pres
ent state ofoffairsinCuba, andto express their
sentiments in relation-to the late acts of tho
Spanish Caban authorities.-
On motion, . 'W'. ,W. -liiwih,- Esq. woe chosen j
President of the meeting,-John •P. Glass, Thos. |
Soott, James Watson, W: W. Dallas, Wm- Moor- ,
head,,..Vice-: Presidens,-and-Lyndo -Eliot, John
Mellon, and Joseph Snowden, Secretaries. .
On motion, a committee of five, consisting of
Mpssrs. James Dunlopi-O. .H- Rippyj W-J. Rose,
F. Egan, and James Pettigrew, was appointed
to draft resolutions expressive of the views Of
tho meeting. ~ - : • - •
Tho Committee having retired,'the president
made - somo very appropriate and eloquent re
marks in relation to the objeots that claimed the
attention of the meeting. After which, owing
-to lond and repeated calls from the multitude
Col Samuel W. Blaok oame forward and ad
dressed the meeting in a truly happy and elo
quent- manner for > about half an hour. The
speech of Col. "Black we shall give hereafter, if
practicable.
Upon the conclusion of-Col. Black’s- speech
tho Committee appointed- for that purpose re
ported the following resolutions:
Wheubab, : We recognize the principle ns
..true ahd“holy, that a free people should sympa
thUowilh down-trodden nations who- strive, by
just and legitimate means, to render themselves
free., ,; And whereas, in all cases. we likewise
recognize the principle that “resistance to ty
ranta-is obedience to God.”
And whereas. They have openly and boldly,
. before, tho whole world, raised aloft tho banner
of independence throughout the Island, pro
claiming the reasons of their revolt and their
determination to be free or die; and have, in
despite of the utmost exertions to re.vanqnish
them, by the whole Daval and military forces of
the Governor, succeeded, in maintaining a heroic
and often victorious cOnfliot/thurfproving them
selves capable, sincere and brave—worthy the
confidence and admiration of mankind; there
fore, . ■ ■ ....
Resolved, That they have our warmest sympa
thies m this,: their hour of greatest need, and
out most .heartfelt prayers for their speedy,
complete and glorious triumph. .■
Rejoined, .That whilo the despots -of Europe,
in defiance of every law of justice, human and
divine, claim and -exercise. the right of interfer
ing, by. intrigue, by mutual subsidies or actual
overwhelming force, to suppress and trample
out the. sacred flame of liberty wherever it ap
pears, and whenever it may suit their conveni
ence: * We, as citizenz of the great American
Republio, do hero asserUhat tiie time has come
when the voioe of this nation should bo heard,
and the rigor of her arm be felt, in favor of all
who battle in tho cause our sires.died for, and
who .call:on ns for aid.
: Resolved, That while - t totally disclaiming all
| desire or intention ! '&fi exciting rebellion within
| tho limits of any, state with whom wo are at
peace, we do most positively'declare, that since
the people of'Cuba have thus valiantly thrown
off, the yoke of servitude, it is our opinion that
tho . re-establishment of Spanish ■ tyranny, at
tended with' evtwy. circnmstance-of redoubled
cruelty to the inhabitants' "Of Cuba, as well os
increased suspicion and insolence towards this
country, is fraught-with penl to our national
peace, comfort-and prosperity
Resolved, That onr Government, while main
lamin—. -proper -.relations of amity - and inter
course with other powers; as stipulated in sol
emn, .treaties, .-can .enter, into- no -engagements
which violate the right,ibroiit freeman
among the many millions who cover these
independent States—-can do nothing which jeop
ardizes onr national security or stains , our na
tional honor—can make no concession derogato
ry to onr dignity and our rank as a great, a free
and a powerful people.
-Remised, . That we regard-tho atrocious and
cowardly butchery of 50 Americans, captured
ou the, 15th of August, either on tho coast of
Cuba or.on the high seas, who wero mercilessly
shot.on the morning of the lGth in or near the
Btroetsof Havana, beneath-tho gaze of a hoot
ing and jeering mob,—an action -whose ferocity
and barbarity is a stain upon the name and na
ture of man, and degrading the proud flag of
. Spain. . ..
Resolved, That we call upon tho authorities at
Washington to demand inßtant and thorough ex
planation for the slaughter of our lamented fel
low citizens—for the outrage upon our national
flag, inflictedin tiie cannonade, detention and
wanton insult of the U. 8. Steamship Falcon by.
tho Spanish war steamer Habanera —for the
threats and indignities heaped upon onr coun
trymen peacefully Bojouming in Havana, —and
for the treacherous and unfeeling conduct of the
Spanish Consul at New Orleans, in withholding
the lost letters of the-dead until absolutely
forced to give them up. .
Resolved, That the course of our Consul at
Havana, A.'F.-Owens, if correctly 1 reported,
lowers him beneath tho dignity k of a man, and
requires his instant removal and condemnation.
Resolved, Thatwe sincerely sympathize with
every heart that bleeds for the brave, butchered
patriots of Havana; —we cherish their cause:as
sacred, and their memories all as sanctified by a
noble death.*' •
Resolved, - That in the: opinion of this meeting
the indiscriminate Bhooting of the fifty prisoners
at Havana, on the 16th of August, was a cold
blooded, inhuman and atrocious act of cruelty,
disgraceful to a civilized community.
Resolved, That though those men may have
been engaged, in a lawless expedition, and un
protected by onr national flag, still they wOre ’
neither pirates nor robbers, bat bravo and hon
orable soldiers, seeking, the restoration to liber
ty of the down-trodden—many of whom stood
high In our estimation .for their private charac
ters and gallant, conduct in the wars of our
country, and deserve the sympathy of their fel
low citizenß and redress From the government.
Resolved, That this meoting recommend to tho
Qovernment tho investigation of this ; outrago
upon humanity, and that if these victims of.
Spanish barbarity were captured- beyond the
maritime jurisdiction of Cuba, or put to death
without trial, or if their remains were matilated
or insulted after death by-tho connivance of the
Cuban authorities, that they demand immediate
satisfaction-for insulted humanity and national
honor. -.--. a : : .... L
Resolved, Thatpublio meetings of the people:
of this country have the right, and it is their
-duty, to assemble and express, npon. all occa
sions, their detestation for cruelty and oppres
sion, whether Roman, Neapolitan, Austrian, or
.Spanish. ; • ■-
Rejoined, That the concentrated indignation
of public meetings of this country, expressed in
the manly language of freemen, will strike ter
ror to the bloody tyrants.of Spanish myrmidons.
Mr. Dunlop moved that the resolutions be
adopted as reported by the .Committee.
Mr. Ross moved -to amend this motion by
striking out-tho following : resolution:—
Resolved, That this meeting commend the
conduct of tho National-Administration, in pro-,
serving their faith to the treaties-witE Spain,.in.
their earnest, efforts to mtercopt and suppress
expeditions against the Government of Cuba,
however odious. .;,,
This motion gave rise to somo disonssion, and
on tho question Ueingitoken the -resolation. was
declared to be'Stricken ont.
Tho question was then-put on tho adoption of
oil the other, resolutions, and.-they were declared
to be adopted by on-almost unanimous vote. -
Calls were, now made from every part of tho i
Hall for P. C. Shannon, Esq. who came forward,
and addresscct W assembly,in a strain of glow
ing eloquence for.about half an hour.
Af tho conclusion .of the speech of: Mr. Shan
non, Mr; John Farrell made SDmeTemarks.-. Ho
was followed by
Esq- who made a very eloquent,
speech of some fifteen minutes, which breathed
a spirit of true patriotism, and, lovo of hberty.
The meeting then odjoumed -amid . the most
enthusiastic feeling on the part of the multitude.

Louisville, May 20,1650.
We have used John Bull’s Sarsaparilla, and have
known it to be used with entire satisfaction; and have
no hesitation in stating that wc believe it to be a safi
and valuable medical compound, and calculated to pro
duce much good, and relieve much suffering; and would
therefore most cheerfully recommend it to the afflicted.
(Signed,) E.W.SKHON,

A BEAUTIFUL CLEAR SKIN.
How we all admire acleur, beautiful,'While skin, and
a rosy colored check. How often do wc see persons,
not possessing this “desideratum so devoutly to be
wished,” resortingtocosmelics, lotions,washes, palio-s
and coloring materials, to restore to them a serablonde
of what disease has deprived them of, and that too, with
great injury to the skin. Bull's Sarsaparilla is tho best
cosmetic known. It beautifies the skin, by removing
every panicle of morbid and diseased matter from the
blood, making it pure healthy and vigorous, giviug ac
tivity to every minute vessel, and changing the yellow
and dark counffhauce to the bloom and freshness of
youth. Ladlefffqhandon the use of points and mixtures,
and use Bull's Sarsaparilla, the only effectual remedy.
