The Toledo dagger is no longer to be token as a typo of the Spanish manners; Spanish jeal ousy, which was formerly proverbial, has given place to the most unaccountable indifference; and the most degrading connections have assum ed among this people an authentic and respected character. The marriage ceremony is the pre lude to unbridled gallantry. While it wonld ho considered indecorous-in an unmarried female to bo seen alone out of doors, or sitting iele~a-ietc with a gentleman, the married lady goes where she pleases, and Veceives what company she likes. When indisposed, she is visited by her acquaintance of both sexes ill her bed chamber, having her head previously dressed that she may be seen to the best advantage. Immediately after mamage, the Spanish belle mast have, as a matter of course, her corlejo, or lover, who is usually a priest or monk, and has in general a very strong hold upon her affections; her husband, compared with tilislover, is a per; son of very secondary, consideration. The cor tgo attends upon her■ on i nil occasions—in pri vate and ill public, in health and insickness.— When she sits at home, he is at her side; when she walks pat,-his arm. supports her; and when she joins in thc.dance, he must De her. partner; ■ The fidelity and constancy of the Spanish lady are tested by her conduct to ber corlejo. This syßtem .of laxity. iB so .-general, in Spain, that there is soarcoly a lady of rank or respectabili ty who has not her domestic lover. A gentleman in Carthagena said one morning to a friend^“ Before Igo to rest this night the Whole city will bethrownintoconfußion.” J This he himself .occasioned by going home an hour before his; uaual time, to the nosumll vexation of his wife and her eortefo, whoso precipitate re treat and unexpected arrival in his own house occasioned the like confusion there; -thus, by. successive and similar operations, was literally fulfilled the ..predictibn of the morning. The clergy, in general, - hold the principal places in this disgraceful connection; in the great 1 cities the canons of the cathedrals, and in country villages, .the monks. .:: How. different arc the man-, ners above’ described from those of Mcny Eng land! and how we ought to cling to those pure minded and fair creatures whohavono othor cor; tejo than the man they accompany - to the altar. —London Journal. 'ADDITIONAL CUBAN NEWS. - When the Falcon hove toy an officer from the Spaniards boarded her, and bchayedin a very inr suiting manner,, ontpuring particularly for Span ish passengers; he soon left, however, when the; Falcon proceeded on her course to Havana, where we learned that the Habanero had the night previous landed with-fifty yersons, taken on fonr launches of Bahia Hatido, who: were all shot at 12 o'clock that day. Forty "of these men were Americans, and were-part of Lopez’ expedition, which had a few days previous land-, ed near .Havana, from the steamer Pampero. The greatest: excitement prevails in Havana. All the Americans are beset with spieS; and none of them feel safe from.»one day to the next.— Very little of the various statements' can be re lied on as. to the position of the government troops and /the revolutionists. The Capt, Gen eral had sent, out about 800 men to meet Gen. Lopez, when if was ascertained that he had landed. They had advanced to a certain posi tion, but would advance no further till they would receive reinforcements—7oo more were then sent. This was about two days before the arrival of the Falcon. During Saturday,. the 16th, the report was that Gen. Lopez luul cut off the communication between the GoYernmentforces and Havana, and the fact of the Captain General having received :no despatches from the General in command, seemed to give strong proof of its truth. Nor had the steamer cruising on the coast any better success.. Another account of the prisoners is, that on tho evening of the 1 Gth, at 8 o’clock, the Captain General despatched the steam ferry boat to Ba- : hia-Handa, to gain intelligence and return the same night. The boat, after cruising about with out-obtaining news, returned to Havana about 7 the next morning. Soon after, the steamer Ha banero came into port, bringing about 40. or 60 wounded soldiers. What these men were doing at Cayes, where they were taken, is a mysteiy. Some suppose they were proceeding to tho vil lage on tho coast, near Havana, and that they ran in among. Cayes to hide from the cruisers. Whether they were armed or not could not bo ascertained. A fisherman first saw them, and gave the Government information, when’the Ha banero was despatched in pursuit. It is said she ran the .boats down, and then picked up the men, but nothing positive, is learned, as ho in tercourse was allowed with the prisoners* and tho Government discloses nothing but what an swers their purpose. The prisoners, after being brought to Havana, were led out, ten at a time, and Bhot from be hind. ' Not a sign of fear nor a murmur escaped from one of them. The bodies were thrown into hearses, six or eight of them at a time, and ta ken away and buried. Many of the spectators of the execution possessed themselves of hats and different portions' of 'Clothing belonging to the. victims, and,’ placing them on sticks’,' march ed through the principal streets of Havana with a kind of Bavago joy, uttering the most bitter cuiacs-on the fcliibusters, accompanied with shouts and vivas for, tho Captain General. Wo learn from another gentleman who came a passenger in the Cherokee, that information had been received at Havana, a few days before the sailing of tho steamer, that Gen. Lopez and par ty had been attacked by a body’ of Spanish, and that after n hard fight, and bloody battle, be had been completely routed. Gen. Lopez and a few followers escaped to the mountains. It is sup poscd“'that the party executed at Havana got separated from their companies and took to launches. Tho advices from California possess no inter 'est. . , vfsKCOKD DESPATCH.]- , t/:,;,;.-; ; The papers nave lengthy ; accounts from Ha vana relative to the Lopez expedition prisoners. It appears that Lopez landed on thel2th. About 1200 men, Toport says, joined him. The Spanish accounts say that he sent letters to the inhabit ants of Posas, threatening their extermination unless they aided him. A fight occurred, in which it is reported the Patriots killed many Spanish troops. The Patriots, on the morning .of the 15th, collected near Ilahonos, with a view of re-embarking. A conflict ensued, in which they were completely routed, and dispersed, into the mountains hack of Bahia-Handa. Those who attempted to escape in boats were captured and executed. Another report says that, in the conflict on tho 15th, the Spanish were three times repulsed, with great loss, and that the Liberators were moving towards Diego de Mulcrg and Uabanos, with the intention of possessing themselves of the Fort at the latter place; that some fifty en deavored to get there by sea, in launches, and wore captured. These accounts give no inform ation ns to the whereabouts of Lopez. Another account says, that the fifty executed, were shot six at a time. Twelve being brought out to the place of execution at a lime, six would be shot, and then the remaining six would be made to walk around and look at their com rades. They were shot in their uniform, blouses aud straw bata. The Consul was denied all intercourse with the prisoners. kestoc£y*el!ction'. Louisville, August 23.
