CHAS. RENT, Pres't. Wm. Wallace, Seedy. 1 ’ Allegheny Bridge Case. Court of Common Pleas. —Before the Hon. Judge McClure. , : Sevesib Bat—Tuesday, Abchjsi 19. The examination of Mr. Harper was again re sumed this morning. , The investigation of the ■ books of the Company was continued. The amount of tolls received from 1819 to I 860; is $887,840 77; interest and rent $87,796 94 ; expenses, repairs and discounts on uncurrcnt paper, $187,689 92; total amount of annual ■ dividends, $241,421 374. The amount-of : divi dends received by the State for the twenty-one years she was a stockholder, is $70,000. Stato tax $5,657 ■ 08. The average dividends since the organisation is 9} per cent, leaving no contin gent fund. JohuSnydcr, awom (to make truo. answers. ) Was a stockholder in the bridge, but am not now; ceased to be a stockholder last Thursday; was a manager of the company for many years. [Witness’ evidence was objected to by relator’s counsel; on the ground of interest. Objection e overruled, and exceptions Bealcd/] Mr. Snyder - was then sworn in chief, and said—Was ac quainted with Alex. Johnßton abont 16 years; he was accurate in keeping his acoonnts, bat ■ not methodical; I succeeded him aB treasurer of the company; I transferred the books to Mr.; J. Harper when I ceased to act in that capacity: have been connected with the company as treas urer and manager since 1832 to the present ■ time; never knew anything done or omitted by ■. the company with a view of prolonging the re ■ demption of the bridge; there never was,’ to my knowledge, any dividends paid upon stock that • was not first fully paid up; the reason for the reduction of the rates of toll was to increase the profits of the bridge; the effect of commutation and reduction of trip tollß has been to increase the Tovcnues of the bridge; during the time I < was treasurer, I transmitted the reports regu larly to the Auditor General; during the time I " was a member of the board, I know of no rcso . lution having been passed excluding James Todd from the benefits of commutation. Cross-examined. —The tolls 1842 and 1843, were diminished some $300; don’t know the cause; if they had collected tolls from the fe males, it would have slightly increased the rev enues ; don’t know the reason far remitting the tolls on females; the sinking fund was always considered in the light of a redemption fund, *nnd so viewed by the Board. James Anderson, re-called.—Why did Board remit tolls on females ? Many of the females crossed by the year, and a great many did not; those in the habit of wearing veils annoyed our toll keepers, who did not know those who paid . by the year, from those who did not; ladies who went by the year were frequently stopped, but afterwards permitted to pass; those who had: not the bridge by the year considered themselves insulted when stopped; we thought it better to remit the tolls altogether. There was an inves : tigation, with a view to ascertain the effect on the revenue. The Court adjourned till Thursday at 10, A. M.
